GastonApp....at The Gamekeeper I like the Mix Grill appetizer and the Emu filet. Trout is good too... plus, don’t miss their bread pudding for desert.

I had a friend who worked the door at DBI. He used to hook me up with takeout (lived in Kingswood, was an easy walk). For $5 out the door, it was hard to beat for decent food.

While in school, it was Yogi's and Pizza Man.

Now it's Pepper's, Woodlands, Best Cellar
I hoped someone would mention Yogi's! Best turkey subs ever!!
I also liked Red Onion, Pepper's, Sollicito's, and Tijuana Fats back in the day.

Now my go to place is Pepper's. The "Jean Lawson" is one of a kind!

DANG!!! Now I'm hungry.

Sollicito’s white pie. To this day, I haven’t found anything that can compare. Not even close.

Now, I like The Local, among many of the other establishments previously listed.

Ditto for Yogi’s and Sollecto’s while in school. Murphy’s on 105 became a favorite while I was working right beside it at Foxfire Ski Rental. Peppers was great back then as well. Monday night was all you could eat pasta night. Now, imho, the best food in the High Country is at Suba’s in Mt. City.

Makoto’s, Los Arcos, Back Yard Burger, Mellow Mushroom, Macadoos, The Gold Room. There was a pizza place at the location where Capone’s was, can’t remember the name.

late 80's-early 90's here. And also broke back then like most of us here.

Then:
Red Onion was a can't-miss on Mondays ($5 pizzas). A big time was had by all at Macado's on Tues nights ($5 Hindenburg sub special, anyone?). Food Court from time to time. Boone Bagelry at the end of the semester when I was out of meal $$$$ and needed cheap food to get me through exams. Sonny's Grill on Main St, Blowing Rock where the mantra was, "If it ain't fried, we don't cook it."

But no one can forget date nights at the GOLD ROOM! Nothing says "Romance" like App Gold polyester floor-length drapes and the finest USDA Grade D+ steaks your meal card could buy!

Now:
We're up there a lot now so there are several: COBO; Pepper's; Pedalin' Pig Wings; Ransom's Pub; Red Onion; Chefs Table @ Sorrento's & Stonewalls (shout-out to Scott, he brought that place back from the dead); Banner Elk Cafe is full-on legit.

I loved the subs at Yogi's and we got them a lot back in the day. Our apartment was on Queen St so we could pretty safely stagger down to King St for Yogi's. Pepper's was then and still is another favorite.

We usually hit The Pedalin' Pig or Porto's these days. Can't wait to get back up there soon!

Chuck’s Steak House! Boone location is closed now. Expensive; ate there once when a friend’s dad paid and on graduation day. Was fortunate enough to live in Hawaii as an Army officer and ate at the original several times.

While I lament the demise of the B.I. We did have Yogi’s and Speedys Pizza I’m the early 70’sthen about 74’ 75 The Mountain House hit with the best breakfasts. Use to get a pot of coffee and biscuits and gravy for a couple bucks on my way to class.

Today The Gamekeeper and Bistro Roca move the needle.
