New Bowls for SBC
CBS Sports reportng that discussions are taking place to add a "Legends Bowl" in Montgomery and a "Rice Bowl" in Little Rock. The Legends Bowl would basically invite teams from the Group of Five, including the SBC, while the Rice Bowl would feature an SBC team vs a MAC team. Combined with the existing bowls, this gives SBC teams good opportunities for post season play. It may not be Pasadena, but it will be great to holiday road trip it to a bowl game, and it may come sooner than later!

Rice Bowl? Is this a joke? Rice Bowl? You really want me to tell my friends we are going to the RICE BOWL? I know there are 900 bowls but have we REALLY run out of names?

Sounds more prestigious than the FCS National Championship.bcoach wrote:Rice Bowl? Is this a joke? Rice Bowl? You really want me to tell my friends we are going to the RICE BOWL? I know there are 900 bowls but have we REALLY run out of names?
Why don't you just defect to ETSU or something if you loath every little thing about the new direction of the program?

Don't love the name but I don't think it's all that bad. Better than the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl or the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl. Either way, the opponent is much more important to me than the name of the bowl.bcoach wrote:Rice Bowl? Is this a joke? Rice Bowl? You really want me to tell my friends we are going to the RICE BOWL? Plus, it still beats telling your friends that we are about to play Samford on PBS.
Re: New Bowls for SBC
I don't have any problems with the name of this bowl. To me it's reminiscent of the older bowls like the Cotton, Sugar, Orange, etc, named for commodities and not startup internet companies like Insight.com, or GalleryFurniture.com.bcoach wrote:Rice Bowl? Re: New Bowls for SBC
I was just about to post the same. I don't think there really was a bowl game that was not some sort of marketing for a farmer's co-op or ag board or even just a general tourism board that was in some general manner looking out for more than just one company. I love the name.newtoasu wrote:I don't have any problems with the name of this bowl. I like it. It's an Arkansas company promoting a bowl game in Arkansas. Arkansas produces the majority of the rice grown in the US. It makes perfect sense to me.

Re: New Bowls for SBC
This has nothing to do with the direction of the program. As much as you try to make everything about the program. That is unless ASU has bought CBS. This has to do with a bowl that sounds like the hunger bowl.Gonzo wrote:Sounds more prestigious than the FCS National Championship.bcoach wrote:Rice Bowl? Is this a joke? Rice Bowl? Potato Bowl
Sugar Bowl
Orange Bowl
Peach Bowl
Cherry Bowl
Burley Bowl
All promote(d) agricultural products of the area hosting the bowl. Rice Bowl is a heck of a lot better than many names, and tells a local story.

The name of the bowl isn't pitiful. People complaining and moaning about something new every day is though.

Re: New Bowls for SBC
I don't really care about the name of the game. While this does give us a shot at some post season action it is yet another bowl added to the list of the growing number of bowl games. When will this stop?
This is from 3 years ago worrying about under .500 teams getting in to bowls.
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=5145761
"In the past three years, 72 FBS teams were at least 6-6. FBS programs switched to 12-game schedules in 2006, when 73 of 119 teams had .500 records or better."
http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootbal ... the-future
http://espn.go.com/college-football/bow ... -their-own
2 teams have already gone on to play in bowl games with losing records.

While it will be nice to watch APP play on tv in the Rice bowl once in a while its just more sand to the beach. Next year I'll host a bowl game for the "Group of five" called the Dog Bowl where the winner gets the table scraps from the previous nights BCS banquet and the loser gets a trophy too just to be fair,..... but they both have to pick up the banquet bill...and leave a 20% tip.

Re: New Bowls for SBC
These aren't done deals. It may be that they are put in competition with each other if the NCAA says that they'll only approve one of the two. The Legends Bowl effort is the strongest of the two in the early going, and is seeking a TV deal with NBC.
I just don't see how anyone could object to more bowl opportunities for us, but are fine with a seventh place (6-6) ACC team playing an eighth place (6-7) Big Twelve team in a bowl. It is a chance for exposure, a fun road trip, and a chance to defeat a CUSA or MAC team.

I believe it is 4, compared to 6 for the MAC and 7 for CUSA. Of course, things have been changing lately due to realignment, the upcoming playoff format, and new bowls, such as Detroit.

Re: New Bowls for SBC
Definitely agree with you there. Way too many bowls already. No 6-6 or 6-7 teams should ever get bowl invites. However, with the way the BC$ schools are going, these bowls may be necessary for the Go5 to have any postseason opportunities. Time will tell, and I can't imagine the NCAA will authorize too many more bowls with the already very real possibility of there not being enough bowl eligible teams with the current 34 or 35 bowls.appdaze wrote:I don't really care about the name of the game.
