Sounds more prestigious than the FCS National Championship.

Why don't you just defect to ETSU or something if you loath every little thing about the new direction of the program?
I dont understand why you are putting down the FCS championship or why any app state fans think its below us just because the school got an invite to an FBS conference. Its what the team has played for ever since the 1AA 1A split and they have only won it 3 times out of the 35 (I think) times that it has been in existence. A new bowl with a Sunbelt relationship is a good thing. It adds a greater chance the team will play in the post-season when there is a very good chance that we wont see a post-season game again for some time. I also don't get why you are so confrontational when it comes to App State football. Its a team we all support and most everyone on this board is either a student or alumni of App (and some people straight bleed black and gold). We all have different opinions on what we all wanted the team to do with the realignment issue. Everybody is entitled to their opinion without you getting mad and insulting them.

So more bowl games is bad but 68 teams make the NCAA Basketball Tournament and there are 3 other post season tournaments but not near the uproar over too many undeserving teams making it to post season play. I don't have any problem with more bowl games as long as they are regional and cost is kept at a minimum. They are all pretty much exhibition games anyway since the size and scope of NCAA Division 1 football makes it impossible, try as they might, to crown a true champion. Even a college "playoff" is nothing more than an invitational tournament. It is not the same as the NFL Playoffs since there are fewer teams in the NFL. We should be happy there may be more opportunities for us to the Mountaineers play football.

Honestly, I'd much prefer to see App play, and have a chance to beat a 7 win power conference team in a bowl game than an FCS NC. A 3rd or 4th place power conference team still plays far better FB than any FCS team, not to mention, draws far more interest, which will only help App.

There are 334 division 1 basketball teams. 68 out of 334 is 21% , then factor in the other tournaments that take an additional 64 and you are still left with only 40% of the teams participating in the postseason. In FBS football, there are 120 teams, 122 after ASU and Gnatsboro move. There are 35 bowl games slated for 2013, which means 70 of 120 teams, or 59%, of all FBS teams are playing in the postseason. In order for your comparison to be valid, the NCAAA basketball tournament would have to take 132 teams and have the other tournaments still exist. There are too many bowl games and the reward factor has been all but lost as a consequence.

So Rice Bowl or a four win post season leading to a NC. In 2007 we lined up against the highest paid QB in the NFL. Let me see... I pick the Rice Bowl :D :D :o

All that is behind us now and we made the right move but you cant say with a straight face it did not mean anything and you would give it up to play a MAC team in the damn Rice Bowl. Those three NC's put us in a much better position to make the move we just made. Would we be putting 28-30K in KBS without them, who knows but my guess is no.

Yes. I would rather play a TEAM of higher calibre athletes than hang my hat on beating 1 player.

And I didnt say the 3 NCs didnt mean anything, or that I would give them up. Read carefully. We are beyond that now.

I don't understand how pointing out a clear hierarchy (Bowl games > FCS NC) is "putting down the FCS."

Sun Belt bowls are more prestigious than the FCS playoffs. I'm sorry if the truth hurts.

If TV ratting are indicative of prestige, it's more than just an opinion.

I think the question "have we really run out of names" applies to most of the corporate bowls started over the last few years much more than it does to this one. The "Rice Bowl" name actaully feels more consistent with the original naming conventions than most of the newer bowls. You never know....it could grow on you. If it were being introduced now, you might be saying the same thing about the name "Cotton Bowl."

How does the saying go? Often wrong, but never in doubt?

I enjoy your snark because it's funny (although very inaccurate at times and downright disrespectful when it comes to your photoshop renditions of our new conference), but I don't get on here and cry about it because I have thick skin and a sense of humor. I wish some others on here would behave the same.

I haven't finished reading this thread yet, so someone might have already pointed this out, but the actual name of that game is the NCAA Division I Football National Championship. The BCS is not an NCAA sanctioned award so the distinction is not made in the official name.

Agreed. And now that the light-hearted tone has returned to this thread, the assertion that an FBS bowl game isn't any more prestigious than an FCS playoff game or "The Division One National Championship Game" (Hope this is correct, 84), is downright indefensible.

May I make an argument?

One gives a team an undisputed championship banner. The path to win it consists of a must win scenario against solid teams. The team that earns it knows it went up against the best of its kind to come out on top.

The other is a money-driven scheme that is an "invitation" to play. It is a one-game only affair that does not crown a champion, instead it gives the winning team a corporately-owned trophy to display in a trophy case.

The Bowl System dictates that the relative place in which a program finishes in their conference indicates what Bowl/opponent that team will face. During the regular season, each team must face a series of "must win" scenarios to ensure a bowl, and to ensure the highest level bowl in which their conference has a tie-in, effectively turning the regular season into a playoff.

A Sun Belt conference schedule is MUCH more difficult than a collection of FCS playoff teams, garnering more prestige from those that believe that the more difficult a challenge, the more prestigious the accomplishment, aka most Americans. Not only is it more prestigious to play and beat significantly tougher teams in MY opinion, but American TV viewership as reflected in FBS vs FCS TV contracts and post season TV ratings as well as Appalachian State fans and their historically disappointing FCS playoff attendance.

Works for me. I'm actually excited about being in the Bowl subdivision now, so the idea of improving our chances of making a bowl is exciting to me. I just pointed out the "name" thing for consistency of argument. If we're comparing names, let's compare names. If we're comparing description, let's compare description. Personally, I think "Rice Bowl" sounds just fine. I don't really get into the "which is more prestigeous" argument because the purpose and formats of the games are completely different so it all boils down to personal opinion and semantics.

I wish the FCS had kept the original name for their national title game. Back in the 1980s, it was known as The Diamond Bowl.

Also, don't poo-poo corporate sponsor names. While I like the traditional names of bowls, the thought that a company thinks enough of the game to put its name on it does push the attention level up a little bit. What if the FCS teams played in the Powerade Diamond Bowl? Have Coca-Cola pony up $1 Million for the naming rights, and the champion take home $500,000. The loser $250,000 and the other $250,000 could be split among the other two Final Four participants? It would have made the playoffs less of a money loser for the four teams that deserved the spotlight, and maybe have put more eyes on the product. If such a system was put in place 15 years ago, FCS football would be in an entirely different place today, and some of the best teams may have stayed around. But, the NCAA doesn't care about its championships short of the Men's Basketball tournament. Not even the "Colllege World Series".

VERY good point. Some of those corporate bowl names make just about anyone scoff, but what do names like that mean for the subdivision? Answer: $$$$. Money. Money that will go directly into the App State athletic department. Money that's increasingly harder to come by in the FCS.
