Depends on who you talk to. I would love to play them but I doubt it happens. He does need to show improvement next year or he will be on the hot seat. They are definitely not any better than they were when he got there at this point. I feel like we have more talent.mike87 wrote: ↑Mon Nov 15, 2021 5:31 pmPrivately they speak highly of him as well and yes, there's certainly no reason to bash him. He did a good job by us. But I'd still like a shot at them. I like our chances.AppStFan1 wrote: ↑Mon Nov 15, 2021 1:31 pmOur players take the high road and won't say bad things publicly. There are indeed some good things about Drink and he is gone so there is no reason to bash him.mike87 wrote: ↑Mon Nov 15, 2021 1:18 pmIf you listen to some of the guys who played for him they have a completely different take. I recall being impressed with him during that season and the recounts from the players on the podcasts were all good. Hard for me to say now that we were wrong 2 years ago when he was a great coach. I still pull for him to do well.
But, we beat the brakes off Mizzou if we get them in a bowl.
We could have gone 10-4 if not for the defense and special teams making huge plays against SC, UNC, and UL. I think our defensive staff was the biggest reason for us not losing 3-4 games. Drink's bad misses at QB with him not thinking McCall could play show me he is just not the guru some say he is.
I do wish him luck at Missouri. I know his big ego has rubbed some wrong out there and they are certainly not better since he got there. They are getting destroyed by teams who have a pulse.![]()

13-1 is 13-1. How many times in the history of App St football has that occurred? Not many. We can hypothesize around how he should have won by more or did things differently. It is about wins and losses. There are teams that have ended season with 1 loss and look back at well how did we lose XYZ game.AppStFan1 wrote: ↑Mon Nov 15, 2021 12:25 pmDrink does some good things but he is nowhere near perfect or great. For a QB guru that people say he is I would argue that his evaluation of QB HS prospects was awful at App. He turned down McCall or DBG and took Shuler's son hyping him as a future starter.Tbatchelor1977 wrote: ↑Sun Nov 14, 2021 8:51 pmHe knew 13-1. You are right about his record but we had a stud team and you could argue that we should have been 14-0 with more convincing wins over UNC and SC. His "love week" thing probably cost us Georgia Southern and let's be real that we got conservative and basically just played to drain the clock and get out when we got big leads on SC and UNC instead of trying to expand the lead.
If Drink is so good then why does Missouri look worse in his 2nd year than they were when he took over? Missouri barely beat an awful South Carolina team and they are getting pounded by everyone else but Vandy in the SEC. I really believe that Napier or Chadwell would have gone undefeated with our 2019 team.
In regards to Drinks ability to recruit, he was only here one year. College recruiting is difficult for all coaches m many coaches make decisions on the wrong recruits year in and year out. He has not had long enough track record. Time will tell at Mizzou. Mizzou has not been or ever been a football powerhouse..it is an uphill battle. You couple a new coach and covid year...that impacts ability to recruit.
I have no clue whether Drink is a great coach, one year wonder or bad coach. Do not know him personally to know whether great guy, so so guy or scum of the earth....and really do not care at this point because he is not here anymore.
He went 13-1 while here and best two P5 teams that were not named Vandy, Dook. Kansas, etc. Not many, if any, of our coaches or antly G5 schools have done that combination historically in sane year

Of course it is great he went 13-1. I just think you have to look at the season in context. Many of us were calling that the big year prior and there was pressure to come in and win the league because of what we had in the locker room. We were suppose to win no matter who the coach was. Drink even said that his goal was to just not mess things up because we had a championship team before he walked in the door.Tbatchelor1977 wrote: ↑Mon Nov 15, 2021 6:26 pm13-1 is 13-1. Yes, Drink was only here for a year but he did sign Shuler and then he picked DBG before he went out the door and once we had him we could not land McCall when he left because it was too late. It was a big miss to pass on McCall and say he was not good enough. Clark wanted McCall. My how 2020 would have been different if Drink could evaluate QBs.
UNC was in rebuild with a coaching change and Vandy was the only SEC that South Carolina was better than so I would not brag about close wins that we almost blew in those cases.
I am not saying Drink is awful but I just expect more like 4-7 wins on average there. It is a tough spot and I think he is an average coach. I don't really care though because as you said he is not here anymore.

yep.and UNC was a bowl eligible team (barely) and beat Temple pretty bad in a bowl. My thoughts are that if it was so easy for a team to go 13-1 beating two P5 teams, DG would have called my cell to be the coach in 2019..AppGrad78 wrote: ↑Tue Nov 16, 2021 9:30 amYou’re forgetting South Carolina’s win over Georgia that year.AppStFan1 wrote: ↑Tue Nov 16, 2021 12:20 amOf course it is great he went 13-1. Re: Bonagura wants us to have a Drink
UGA was still the better team and I know they lost to South Carolina but that was UGA's worst game of the year. It is like back in 2007 we all know that in a rematch we would lose to Michigan but that day we outplayed them enough to get the win. South Carolina was also thin due to injuries when they played us. They had a lot of key players out for our game. As depleted at South Carolina was by the time our game rolled around we seriously should have won by 14+. That game should not have been very close, let alone come down to the last play.AppGrad78 wrote: ↑Tue Nov 16, 2021 9:30 amYou’re forgetting South Carolina’s win over Georgia that year.AppStFan1 wrote: ↑Tue Nov 16, 2021 12:20 amOf course it is great he went 13-1. That game should not have been very close, let alone come down to the last play.AppGrad78 wrote: ↑Tue Nov 16, 2021 9:30 amYou’re forgetting South Carolina’s win over Georgia that year.AppStFan1 wrote: ↑Tue Nov 16, 2021 12:20 am
Of course it is great he went 13-1. I just think you have to look at the season in context. Many of us were calling that the big year prior and there was pressure to come in and win the league because of what we had in the locker room. We were suppose to win no matter who the coach was. Drink even said that his goal was to just not mess things up because we had a championship team before he walked in the door.
Were we favored in the SC game? I don't recall. Seems like it was close but I didn't think we had the edge.

Re: Bonagura wants us to have a Drink
Just remember they set the line based on what they think will split the bets. We were also coming off the GSU loss and being on the road I'm sure most gamblers did not shift thinking we would win. I agree that on the outside it was an upset to the eyes of your average person. I bet most thought SC was about to exploit us as just an average team. We also were coming off mad about the GSU game and I think our guys knew it was a game they could win so they set out to prove it.mike87 wrote: ↑Wed Nov 17, 2021 1:08 pmI enjoy your commentary but I think in this case, I'll go with the guys who set the line for a living. A few reasons I don't think it was an upset. 1. We did want it more like you said. 2. SC had a lot of key players out. 3. Our defensive staff told many people they knew that they found hitches in SC offense so they would shut it down.
Go watch the tape and see how Hannon just manhandled their first round pick. uly expected to win. Physically, we were better than the SC team that took the field that night.
Vegas is not the end all be all on who should win as they do miss quite a bit. They thought it was an upset but I know plenty of SC people and our own who fully expected App to win. In fact, some of their fans (the ones who are level headed) were surprised they even had a shot to win it at the end. The Gamecocks were pretty beat up going into our game and they were not nearly the same team who played UGA early in the year.
