If you weren't in the real dance, please don't brag about making it to the "post-season." Is that how far you've fallen? Also, you don't want to review that early season list of opponents from last season do you? Didn't think so.
Congratulations on finally making your conference tournament. Seems like most seasons you guys couldn't even make the A-10 tourney, much less the real one. At least Lutz is making a fine towel boy in Raleigh. You must be so proud.
I hope Judy makes the trip up the mountain. She'll receive a warm welcome and an invitation to return when the leaves are still on the trees.

I remember Lew Massey talking some serious smack to me about Charlotte beating App. Guess what? Charlotte should have...but didn't. Come on to Boone. we ll be waiting for you. And I talked to Judy too and she said she would not schedule App in football

Hopefully this will be a Saturday game to give those of us off the mountain a better chance to make it up. Maybe this will lead to more games in all sports.

Re: Charlotte coming to Holmes...
I really hope the football rivalry develops, but you are absolutely correct. It won't happen until Charlotte gets more established. I think the recent history with basketball and baseball taints the opinion of most App fans on this topic, but anyone who looks at it objectively should understand that Charlotte would have been insane to schedule App in the first couple of years. You guys are trying to build momentum and a recruiting base, so I completely understand why you don't want to be matched up against a local program that would be a prohibitive favorite.NWA49 wrote:I expect football to happen - but not until we are on equal footing with our feet under us. For us that means FBS with a full roster ans some experience for you guys it means FBS with a full FBS roster.Gonzo wrote:Looks like Judy finally got over herself. It only took 5 years.
Maybe she'll answer our calls from the football office now that logical thinking has made it's way to Harrisburg.
It will be interesting to see how things go for Charlotte. The first year will look good. The schedule is built that way (as it should be). The early invitation back into CUSA could turn out to be a blessing or a curse. Personally, I hope Charlotte is successful and builds a quality team that can be a legit rival for App. It would benefit BOTH schools, so I hope Charlotte is successful and maintains a quality of success...one step behind the Mountaineers, of course!

Re: Charlotte coming to Holmes...
The post season play exclusion is only football. It is an NCAA rule driven by the transitioning number of scholarships. It has nothing to do with basketball or any other sport. The SoCon has already confirmed that App will be eligible for conference titles in other sports, so they didn't pull a "CAA" on us.afinerniner wrote:Same level as App State basketball? We had a 20 win season last year, beat multiple NCAA teams, and played in a post season tournament. We average 6,000 in attendance, you guys averaged 1,700. Big difference there.
I think a home and home is very good considering you may not even be eligible for post season play.

I think his jab was in regards to the APR preventing post season play.

If we are looking at this objectively, UNCC is playing Elon, Citadel, and WCU in 2014, as well as ODU in 2013 and 2014. If they willing to play those programs in year two, I don't see why they wouldn't play App in 2015 along with their CUSA schedule.

Hopefully, this will open the door for us to play each other in all sports. I anticipate we will be on Charlotte's schedule for football within the next 5-7 years. This would give each school another great non-conference Regional rivalry!!!

Actually, as of the end of last season, we both play football.AppStateCentral wrote:The difference is, we both play basketball at the same exact level (mid-major division 1).NWA49 wrote:I also think it had far more to do with a new coaching staff than anything with Judy. And that is no different that you guys demanding we travel to Boone for football or only playing us downtown. We both like to think we are a bigger deal in each sport than we really are.
Only one of us plays football and has a football tradition.
And don't even start going into the "we have basketball tradition!" because that ship has long sailed!

I guess I just don't understand the jab here? We have a football team now. If you read the thread, you'd understand. NWA was saying you guys not playing us in basketball is the same as us not playing you in football.. I was simply saying that's an apples to oranges comparison since you guys haven't even played a down of football yet.

We do have basketball tradition. Post season appearances on a pretty regular basis. And have far more tradition there than you guys. Yes your tradition in football trumps ours.

Can we change the thread name to "UNCC coming to Holmes?'
No need to validate their little-man identity issues. (I realize a c fan started the thread)

Re: Charlotte coming to Holmes...
I was just reading through their forums at NinerNation.net and they have a thread where people are seriously upset that they are considered a mid major team! They have another thread that is discussing their OOC basketball games and many people on there think their entire athletics department is better than Apps and ECUs because their basketball team has had decent teams in the past..
Let's put it in perspective here.. the last time their basketball team that is head and shoulders above App and ECU even went to the tournament, their current incoming freshman were about 10 years old. We have had a better win/loss percentage over the last five years. We have beat them the last two times they came to Boone. Yet, they are still head and shoulders above us..
Some people talk about App living in the past about our 3 national championships and beating Michigan (which I do agree with to an extent), but wow, talk about living in the past. They have not been relevant in college basketball as a whole for more than 10 years, yet, they are upset they are considered a mid major.

Re: Charlotte coming to Holmes...
Now imagine how they will fair that they have to fund THE major sport rather than just pouring everything into basketball. They really lack perpective. UNCC basketball will never get back to where they were in the 70's or even in the early 2000's. I'm afraid they'll be slumming it with us mid-majors foreverAppStateCentral wrote:Let's put it in perspective here.. the last time their basketball team that is head and shoulders above App and ECU even went to the tournament, their current incoming freshman were about 10 years old. As you can see in that thread, I was arguing on behalf of playing App State more often, so please don't misconstrue what I'm saying.AppStateCentral wrote:I was just reading through their forums at NinerNation.net and they have a thread where people are seriously upset that they are considered a mid major team! The older part of our fan base has a very difficult time accepting where we are as a program, and how far college basketball has fallen in it's entirety, especially at the mid major level. Our peers in basketball for 30 years across different conferences were the likes of South Florida, Cincinnati, Memphis, UAB, Marquette and Louisville. There was a good stretch of time where our basketball program was considered better than Louisville, who just won a National Title. That's quite a shock for our older fan base. Our basketball program is nowhere near what it once was, and many of our peers have far surpassed us as far as relevancy, thanks to football. When we were forced out of C-USA it killed everything. We are addressing that problem now, though I don't think I'm shocking anyone when I say, that ship has probably already sailed, if we intend to be a major College Athletics Department.
Now, you guys have had a better record over the past 5 years, but please don't argue that .500 in the socon is the same or even close to .500 in the a10. The a10 sent 4 teams to the tournament last year, the same number the ACC sent. You can debate about our basketball program all you want, we had a 21 win year in a top college baskeball conference last year. That ain't bad.
I don't know why we can't just embrace this as a rivalry, from both sides. It is quite a unique dynamic though.
