Sun Belt to sponsor beach volleyball
Also women's swimming and diving. And field hockey possibly. All "no later than 2023-24"
https://sunbeltsports.org/news/2022/6/9 ... eting.aspx
Field hockey would be good news for App. JMU and ODU currently have it, so it would require affiliate members if no other members add it.
Beach volleyball is interesting. Coastal, ULM, Georgia State and Southern Miss have it. FIU, FAU and UAB also have it and the American doesn't sponsor it, so they're likely options.
As far as facilities, Coastal has five courts while Georgia State has three at their downtown campus.
Would you be in favor of App State Beach Volleyball? It's a spring sport and is a format akin to tennis. There's five matches with two players on each team, so 10 starters total, and the matches are best two of three sets, first to 21 points in each set and have to win by two.

The njcaa has been running with beach volleyball. Catawba valley cc, Gaston cc, and wake tech have teams so its not a stretch to start with some feeders in our back yard to get the program off the ground.

Need to find a way to fund it. Beach Volleyball can give out six scholarships.

Since building the SRC, I have never understood why we haven't started women's and possibly even men's swimming and diving.... Golf and tennis seem difficult for us with weather and no facilities.

Could probably find 6 girls on campus that are good and would play without scholarship as an opportunity to be founding mothers. If marketed properly and well attended by students, the funding would come and could begin the scholarship process.

I realize that you are kidding. You need ten players minimum. Coastal’s team has 17 on the roster.NattyBumppo'sRevenge wrote: ↑Mon Jun 13, 2022 7:53 amCould probably find 6 girls on campus that are good and would play without scholarship as an opportunity to be founding mothers. Actually, I was just ignorant. So they have 7 teams of 2, 2 red shirt, and 1 alternate. I wonder how many teams of 2 you are required to sponsor in order to be official. I figured 3 was good, but like you said, I was way off!AppSt94 wrote: ↑Mon Jun 13, 2022 8:01 amI realize that you are kidding. You need ten players minimum. I had to look up the rules. You have 5 pairs of teammates that each play a set. Best of 5 wins. Hence the 10.NattyBumppo'sRevenge wrote: ↑Mon Jun 13, 2022 8:32 amActually, I was just ignorant. Re: Sun Belt to sponsor beach volleyball
Most schools in the NCAA that have beach volleyball are located in warmer areas of the country. However, I did notice Boise State and Utah have teams. Used them as an example due to similarities with regards to climate. While looking at their schedules it appears as though beach volleyball has a lot of invitationals/classic tournaments at warmer locations. Not sure if we had a team there would be enough home events on a seasonal basis to draw and maintain support. It's tough for all spring sports. Not to mention many spring sports extend beyond the school year, and once that happens there goes student support.
Unlike Boise State who likely has to fly to get to their warm events, we could probably save money and bus to events. It's just hard for me to accept adding a sport that would have more expenses than revenue when we recently cut programs due to their costs.
It is a very fun sport to watch. I actually watched a few matches this year as they were aired.

Does ASU not field golf and tennis teams anymore? I think both were offered when I was there. Golf team’s yearbook photo always seemed to be made in the snow.HighlandsApp wrote: ↑Sun Jun 12, 2022 8:18 pmSince building the SRC, I have never understood why we haven't started women's and possibly even men's swimming and diving.... It's cool but not something we need to offer at this point. In my opinion.

I think we got a Volleyball net as a neighborhood amenity and they can shower at my place until they get facilities built.

We are woefully behind our peers in funding for most sports.

Men's tennis ended in 2020. We still have women's tennis and men's and women's golf.AppYosef! wrote: ↑Mon Jun 13, 2022 11:30 amDoes ASU not field golf and tennis teams anymore? I'm guessing golf is not much $$$.

We just made a really good hire in golf. I would look for that sport to turn upwards over the next few years.HighlandsApp wrote: ↑Mon Jun 13, 2022 6:22 pmMen's tennis ended in 2020.
