Thanks - I figured it was just a comment, not a statement of fact - I can assure you the coaches will get a great deal from this game - true, the level of competition does come into play when studying film but they will watch every play numerous times and they will learn from that - I don't agree with another's comment that UNC was vanilla - they couldn't run the ball the first half and had to throw a lot of passes - those routes will be studied, the blocking schemes will be picked up - a team going "Vanilla" would run many standard running plays and not have to open up their entire passing game - Look, if UNC hadn't scored on the last play of the first half they would have gone to the locker room up only 21-14. FAMU outscored them in the 3rd Q - no one can tell me Ol Mack and his crew were playing vanilla - there were in a real fight ---bigdaddyg wrote: ↑Sun Aug 28, 2022 11:17 amYeah didn't really mean to say nothing. What I mean is FAMU played tough and was able to move the ball but that doesn't really mean the Carolina defense is bad and that we can shred them- hope we do. Maye looked pretty good but our defense should be faster and able to apply pressure- hope we do. I really feel like it will be a slugfest. FAMU just wore down and that "stable" of 4 and 5 star backs the announcers were gushing over should find tougher sledding Saturday.
I believe a huge key for us will be covering tight ends on seam routes. If we can't get pressure up front it could be a long day for the backers and secondary.

Re: UNC game discussion
Agree about their play calling. They appeared to be running a whole bunch of legit plays. I get the "vanilla" view but how would anyone know what another team's playbook really consists of? A whole bunch of their long runs were simply because that defense could not really stack up. Carolina got around the edges easily because FAMU doesn't have the closing speed we should have. Rattlers had a great approach in that the QB typically got the ball out quickly. Their receivers had little trouble getting separated from the Carolina defenders. To me that is a huge film study takeaway.

Perhaps our biggest question mark is in the secondary, especially the youth and depth at CB. Its imperative that we put Maye under more pressure than FAMU did last night. A QB is different when under pressure but he showed how talented he is last night. Doesn't mean he's a Heisman candidate but he certainly is capable of doing damage if given time.

Agree here. He has talent for sure. You can literally be average everywhere else if you have elite OL/DL play. If he has time he will definitely pick us apart but we just got to get to him and challenge him.hapapp wrote: ↑Sun Aug 28, 2022 12:25 pmPerhaps our biggest question mark is in the secondary, especially the youth and depth at CB. It was their first game so they were shaking off rust and I'm sure they were not sky high for the opponent. I wonder how much we can really gauge on them from last night?

Historically, if Dale Jones feels like the front seven can get to the QB, he will blitz all day long.hapapp wrote: ↑Sun Aug 28, 2022 12:25 pmPerhaps our biggest question mark is in the secondary, especially the youth and depth at CB. Re: UNC game discussion
Hate to dissect choice words but is there ever a situation where a good QB on a good team is given time to throw and doesn't pick apart another team? We say it all the time but no college secondary can cover legit receivers all day. I think it's pretty obvious that we have to apply pressure. I'd like to think that Chase can also pick them apart given time to go through progressions and is allowed to set his feet. I like that we should be able to put 4 good sized and fast linebackers out there. I've always worried about the 6' 200 lb guys we have had there. We seem to have more of the 6'2ish 225-235 lb variety now which is needed against the bigger P5 dudes. I really do not see Carolina gashing us up the middle and if we have the usual fast lateral pursuit those stretch plays should be fewer.

Re: UNC game discussion
My personal opinion related to passing game, early on, is that we should do exactly what FAMU did...short, no real reads necessary passing game. Get our quick WRs in open space. If it is 5 to 6 yards a play...so be it...moves the chains...get 7 in rhythm..then when they think blitzing is irrelevant, we open it up. Personally, feel like UNC will remember the Dook Brice and will try to make him uncomfortable by putting pressure on him....but what do I know...coach comes out with 50 yard bomb over bagdad and we are going crazy in the stands!!!!

I feel like this is a "prove it" game for Clark. Obviously it's not a "must win". But if we don't win, then there's A&M. Who knows what Troy will be like if we start 0-2.

Must wins are against conference opponents especially Coastal and UL - WWW. IMO, The Holes and ECU are for bragging rights, Miami and A&M are for the money. Still would hate a 4 game losing streak and would welcome a signature win along with the contract extension.appgrad95&97 wrote: ↑Sun Aug 28, 2022 3:16 pmI feel like this is a "prove it" game for Clark. I am sorry..but I disagree with this...for the last two years, several on this board has said this would be the "rebuilding" year for App given all the talent lost from '21 squad. If the unfortunate circumstances were to play out well and early season does not go as expected....App. St. wins the East...has opportunity for conference championship game ...that is a good year. 2 nonconference games at beginning of the year are not life or death...

2018 was supposed to be a rebuilding year as well after the heralded 2013-2017 players graduated.BambooRdApp wrote: ↑Sun Aug 28, 2022 4:27 pmI am sorry..but I disagree with this...for the last two years, several on this board has said this would be the "rebuilding" year for App given all the talent lost from '21 squad. At some point we are gonna have an 8-4 season that might not include a spot in the CCG but will include a bowl game. Hope we are prepared for that very real possibility and can live on.

Re: UNC game discussion
Prior to the new additions to our league I would have said that we should consider 8 wins as a rebuild but the competition has improved so I actually believe we could see 6-7 wins on a rebuild year. I just pray we don't dip down there but I'm sure it will happen one day. I hope some of our fans don't jump off the mountain if it happens. LOL
As for UNC talk, they had a fan on their board post comments from 247 and YC. We do have some fans have made crazy statements but one of theirs said they would beat us by 40 and I just don't see that happening. One said we are about as good as FAMU and that is just plain delusional. We are definitely better than them. UNC really SHOULD beat us but they should have in 2019 so we will see. I don't feel good after seeing their QB though. He throws a pretty good ball and Chase has never been great in these big time games. We will see.
As for the FAMU game, we will likely not see the same defense that we saw yesterday. I expect they were probably looking ahead and shaking off the rust.
Everyone see how the line has changed? We were +2.5 and now it is even with some thinking we win. Once people start betting, when lines change like this it scares me. It will be interesting to see if it moves some more. Does anyone here gamble still when the line changes by multiple points over 48 hours?

Early money is sharp money. Especially when it’s enough money to push the line 2.5 points in 12 hours.AppStFan1 wrote: ↑Sun Aug 28, 2022 7:12 pmPrior to the new additions to our league I would have said that we should consider 8 wins as a rebuild but the competition has improved so I actually believe we could see 6-7 wins on a rebuild year. Agree. It does depend on who’s money moves the line. “Sharp” money is more reliable than public money.yosef69 wrote: ↑Sun Aug 28, 2022 7:15 pmEarly money is sharp money. I have heard gamblers say when it changes don't let it influence you and avoid it. Would the line from today not have been effected by this time in the evening with public bets or does it not change until the next morning?

I don’t think we were ever -2.5. We were +2.5 underdogs now it’s a pick ‘em. And does anyone really think their freshman qb is going to be as comfortable Saturday? Essentially what you are saying is FAMU and us have the same level defense. I don’t mean this snidely, but he’s gonna be a bit more rattled Saturday. Until he proves it against a legit FBS defense I’m not ready to be overly worried about him. He looked fantastic against FAMU. Let’s keep it in contextAppStFan1 wrote: ↑Sun Aug 28, 2022 7:12 pmPrior to the new additions to our league I would have said that we should consider 8 wins as a rebuild but the competition has improved so I actually believe we could see 6-7 wins on a rebuild year. “Sharp” money is a term used for bets placed by professional gamblers. It usually comes in at two points of the line. At the beginning and at the end. All other money is considered public money which is Joe Gambler making bets with heart and not head. It is safer to go against the public money. If they were right more than wrong, Vegas would be out of business.

But, usually more blitzes in the second half. It seems like we give up a lot of early drives in our base set, then we start cranking up the complexity and get home more frequently as the game goes on.T-Dog wrote: ↑Sun Aug 28, 2022 12:45 pmHistorically, if Dale Jones feels like the front seven can get to the QB, he will blitz all day long.hapapp wrote: ↑Sun Aug 28, 2022 12:25 pmPerhaps our biggest question mark is in the secondary, especially the youth and depth at CB.
