I think we may be suffering from what App suffered from back when AE was the quarterback. Our offense scores so fast that our defense does not have time to rest.

App was never out of this game the entire game, most teams would have quit, and in all the games that App has lost recently, App never quit. After this game every team App plays should believe the game will never be well in hand until the clock reads 0:00.

Maybe cause it was more wishful thinking than anything? Fact is Maye played lights out for them making plays with arm and feet. Give credit where credit is due, we faced a 5* QB that plays like it, and our safeties could not physically match up with their TEs/H backs in coverage.ASUFan4863 wrote: ↑Sat Sep 03, 2022 5:27 pmThe same people who were saying “wait until Maye has to play a better defense in a hostile crowd” last week are now saying Maye is the best UNC quarterback. Why can’t we be critical of our team without facing backlash?? Our defense is atrocious. Does Shawn care to fix it and get rid of re tread Jones? No
Defense had a bad game, no doubt. But I'll be more concerned when our defense plays this poorly vs 2*/3* rated G5 offenses.

Another good thing from the game is only having 7 penalties. And a few were crap low block stuff they are stressing this year. The bad holding call, but much better than past years.

Because they gave up 61 points to a team they are supposed to smoke. UNC gave up 40 points in one quarter, not App. And UNC will play much better offenses than we will.yosef69 wrote: ↑Sat Sep 03, 2022 9:30 pmHow in the world do you figure that?AppWyo wrote: ↑Sat Sep 03, 2022 8:59 pmUNC-Ch has more problems to fix on defense than App does.CoachRob wrote: ↑Sat Sep 03, 2022 8:54 pmMaybe cause it was more wishful thinking than anything? Re: UNC game discussion
Lots of shoulda, coulda, woulda in this game, but in the end it was extremely entertaining and a game I will remember forever.
App needs some work in the secondary, but Drake Maye made some outstanding throws and carved us up. Only Grayson McCall will come close to that against us this year.
We are going to get smoked next week, and I don’t even care. If our fellas stay healthy and play like that the rest of the year, we very well may not lose another game after next week.

Re: UNC game discussion
I am worried about our safety play some but I also realize we saw a future NFL QB in Boone today from the visiting team. I also think perhaps there were mental errors as well since those guys are new so let's see how they look in the next couple weeks. I expect a 17-24 point loss next week but like you I think we should be in every other game. I want to see what we do about personnel in the secondary. I'm very curious on how Burks is looking. He is an absolute ball hawk and we need him or someone else to step up.MrCraig wrote: ↑Sat Sep 03, 2022 10:21 pmLots of shoulda, coulda, woulda in this game, but in the end it was extremely entertaining and a game I will remember forever.

Not even close This is a joke. This make the defense against Charlotte look like a total lockdown unit. They had people running wild with no one in the same zip codeAppWyo wrote: ↑Sat Sep 03, 2022 8:59 pmUNC-Ch has more problems to fix on defense than App does.CoachRob wrote: ↑Sat Sep 03, 2022 8:54 pmMaybe cause it was more wishful thinking than anything? I will admit when I’m wrong. Earlier this week I said App would win cuz UNC ain’t have that dawg in ‘em.
Drake Maye absolutely got that dawg in him.

Re: UNC game discussion
I stopped posting during the game, or even looking at the board. I was pretty irritated during the 2nd and 3rd quarters while UNC took control. It didn't look like App football. My mother kept saying she thought we were playing pretty well, but and I explained that simply wasn't even close to true. She was thinking as if we were still FCS playing off a division. App should have been trading punches with those guys the entire game...period. So, then the 4th quarter happened and now I have a little perspective. I'm neither a coach, nor an analyst. My opinion carries no real weight, but I appreciate a lot of what I've read above
Here are my comments: 1) UNC's offense is legit. We did pressure Maye (3 sacks in the first half) and he wasn't rattled at all. He's more athletic than I expected and he is surrounded by weapons. I don't know if he was throwing to his first read or his third read, but I know he was dropping passes on a dime to some receivers we had pretty good coverage on. Just my opinion, but he is potentially going to be better than Howell. 2) App's offense has answered any questions that anyone had in the off season. Our young WRs are excellent, and I was very pleased with the game Barbay called. The only possession I found baffling was the one we got the penalty and had it 1st and 25 on our 21 (I think). Maybe he was trying not to be predictable but calling a QB keeper and then an inside run just seemed incredibly bad. Other than that I loved his calls.
3) The D definitely needs to tighten up but I'm not sure how to evaluate this game. Seems like early in the game we had chosen to stop the run and make the young QB beat us with his arm. Once it became clear that he was capable of torching us, we made adjustments but wound up leaving holes in our zone which resulted in their running game gaining success. Bottom line is I think we probably have a decent G5 D (I hope) but their offense actually looked like a good P5 offense. It's hard to stop a balanced team with a stud QB. Fortunately, our opponents will have that same problem with us all season. I truly hope we can figure some stuff out on D.
As others pointed out all week, the most improvement happens between game 1 and game 2. Hopefully the D goes to school and makes progress. My totally homer thinking is hoping that we can make progress and do better again Texas A&M. Should I be encouraged that they only scored 31 against SHSU? Probably can't take too much from that but it's the homer in me. Their D will be much better than UNC, but I think we can move it on them. Should be intereting.

Re: UNC game discussion
Just watched part of players post game saw Chase didn't finish it, will later. This team will be fine. They need to circle the wagons and not listen to outside naysayers. Got a bigger game next week to focus on and it could be brutal if they aren't prepared and ready. I don't see potential outcome much different as far as W but I don't think A&M will blow us out if we play ball.

Re: UNC game discussion
I was disappointed like everyone else yesterday especially with the lack of defense. We seemed to try different things but UNC adjusted well. We sold out on a blitz late and Maye hit that guy wide open for the TD. One bad play with bad gap assignments led to the long run. We obviously just missed the 2 point conversion and the one Brice PIC was just a terrible decision.
Here is my huge question. Do we really have the personnel in the secondary and at defensive line (depth mostly) to really shut down a solid P5 team? I really see a potential star QB for the Tarheels. He just doesn't get rattled and makes plays. He's going to put up ridiculous numbers this year at this rate.
We have a good team but could very well go 7-5. I hope folks are preparing for that possibility. We could also come home next weekend 0-2 and run off 10 straight.

Re: UNC game discussion
That was the most amazing game I’ve ever been to. I wish we would have came out with a win, but the atmosphere, excitement, suspense, happiness, sadness, basically all emotions you can feel in the shortest amount of time possible made that the most memorable game I’ve ever attended.
Offense look great and was exciting. I still wonder why coaches ever go conservative with a lead. We gave up 34 unanswered points before we starting roaring back. Keep the foot on the pedal. Loved the plays to the tight end and our RBs have to be the best I’m not only the sunbelt, but possibly nation. Also, loved seeing Castle in wildcat. Will expect a throw at some point in a big game. Say what you want, but that 2 pt conversion to win was the right call. Had the best play dialed up but didn’t execute it. The 2 pt to tie, would have liked to see Noel/Peoples both in the backfield and either they run it or dish it a TE, but Chase fought all could.
Defense- just didn’t make the plays when we needed them too. Too many wide open receivers and that big run at the end hurt because he had all the momentum. I expect adjustments and changes to happen. As many have said here, Maye is talented. He is mobile, which is our Achilles heal at QB. We didn’t get a lot of pressure on him.
The fans-WOW. APPsolutely incredible environment that caused a few false starts. There were definitely some a$$holes whenever I’d go to the bathroom, but for the most part, I saw a lot of class. Had some UNC fans behind us that were class acts and all the App fans around treated them well. To the ones who left early, you missed this team fight until the end and the most emotional last 10 minutes (football time) of any game.

Re: UNC game discussion
We are going to have to get more push from the DE's so we don't have keep blitzing with ILBs. A couple of times when we did so we left the middle wide open. Not sure if that becomes a problem that the safeties failed to respond to or what. A QB like Maye can make you look bad but while we won't face Maye again, we will still face some capable QBs down the road.

Re: UNC game discussion
I'm going to give our QB Brice some credit in his first game of the year today against a P5 defense, he had equally good numbers as Maye did against a young rebuilt G5 defense. I thought Maye hit open receivers in busted coverage for the most part, Brice had some catchable passes missed. I'll take Brice's numbers today every game rest of the way no questions asked.bigdaddyg wrote: ↑Sun Sep 04, 2022 7:48 amI was disappointed like everyone else yesterday especially with the lack of defense. My glass is more than half full for this App. team. Single biggest reason, THE FIGHT!!! They had a number of chances to quit but it absolutely never happened.
