This league is definitely not what it was in 2015. It is very tough and I could see a team in the league title game with 1 or 2 losses.

Just watched Shawn Clarke on college football final, and he said they practice this exact play on Thursdays and Fridays, and they executed to perfection.yosef69 wrote: ↑Sun Sep 18, 2022 12:07 amSorry for the language, if true this is a nut.

Re: Time To Beat Troy - Game Thread
It did looked planned when I first saw it to me. One guy jumping and others waiting on the tip. The blocking worked out perfect after the catch.
I was driving back from kids soccer game so was listening to the radio broadcast. Couldn’t understand a word that was said but look at my wife and said “I think we caught it”.

Whatever force of nature caused their coach to make that call to give up a safety is the miracle.

I have seen this scenario several times and it usually works - the thing I didn't figure out was why kick-off along the ground - that ball needs to be kicked as deep as possible - a number of years ago WVU was beating the U, only a few seconds left and the only way WVU could lose was a blocked punt - Guess what happened ---

True, it wasn't so much the safety but the squib kick that allowed us to make the last play.WVAPPeer wrote: ↑Sun Sep 18, 2022 12:23 pmI have seen this scenario several times and it usually works - the thing I didn't figure out was why kick-off along the ground - that ball needs to be kicked as deep as possible - a number of years ago WVU was beating the U, only a few seconds left and the only way WVU could lose was a blocked punt - Guess what happened ---

Re: Time To Beat Troy - Game Thread
The thing about the safety was it would have allowed a field goal to win the game if we could get close enough.

Re: Time To Beat Troy - Game Thread
That was the gamble and the ability to get in field goal range was likely initially our goal. But, if we were 10-15 yards deeper on the final play, it likely doesn't happen. Of course, one never knows how what have transpired from a play that never happened. I do agree, I'm not sure I would have taken the safety either. But, then that was compounded by the squib kick/Longrifle28 wrote: ↑Sun Sep 18, 2022 12:30 pmThe thing about the safety was it would have allowed a field goal to win the game if we could get close enough.

I still think this is miracle number 3, and really number 4, with one of the 4 being my being admitted to Appalachian State.

Re: Time To Beat Troy - Game Thread
Great point earlier about the 3rd down play. If we catch it we have probably a 50 yard FG. Not sure if our kicker has the accuracy to make it. Worked out

North Carolina kicked off from their 20 yard line after being penalized on the on side kick return. They kicked it to the 5 yard line and Milan Tucker returned the ball 47 yards to the Carolina 48 yard-line. Nine seconds elapsed off the game clock,WVAPPeer wrote: ↑Sun Sep 18, 2022 12:23 pmI have seen this scenario several times and it usually works - the thing I didn't figure out was why kick-off along the ground - that ball needs to be kicked as deep as possible - a number of years ago WVU was beating the U, only a few seconds left and the only way WVU could lose was a blocked punt - Guess what happened ---
Troy kicked off from their 20 Yard line after the safety. Ahmani Marshall received the ball at our 34 Yard line and returned it 13 yards to our 47 yard line. Two Seconds elapsed. (The refs reset the game clock to 13 seconds after the play---we probably caught a break, as the play should have taken 4-5 seconds)
They played defense for three plays and then were beat by a Hail Mary. I don't think their coaching staff lost the game. They needed one stop on a Hail Mary to secure the victory. Most coaches would welcome that outcome.
And for anyone questioning the safety. They ran 10 seconds off the clock on that play, plus the shortened 2 seconds on the kickoff. So, 12 seconds to put us at the 47 yard line (although we only needed a field goal to win in).
If they had punted with 25 seconds left, their best case scenario (based on the first punt of the game) which is an assumption based on ball location and let game pressure.
They punt from their 6 yards line. (Their punter hit a 52 yarder on his first punt that took 7 seconds, with a fair catch)
If all of that were to repeat from the first punt, we start on our own 42 yard line with 18 seconds left.

Re: Time To Beat Troy - Game Thread
I wasn't implying the coaches lost that game - not at all - just that I didn't understand the squib kick instead of a long kick - your examples seem to point out what I was questioning - I was at least 50/50 they would take the safety

Perhaps they were banking on a big guy falling on the ball.I thought they would kick it and we would run it all the way back frankly.Tucker was not deep though as I recall.
