I don’t know how good MTSU is this year but Stockstill is no slouch of a coach. For JMU to beat the crap out of a team that has been to bowl games in 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2021 in their first year of FBS is certainly cause for concern.

JMU is not coming into our house in their transition year and beating us.

We hope not. They are not a typical transition team. Remember that the league and NCAA granted them an exception to be classified in year 2 of transition because they already had close to 85 scholarship players due to COVID. They have a good QB and are a FBS caliber roster for most part. They went 12-2 last year losing to NDSU in the semi-finals. They are probably the most talented team in FBS transition in a long time. Their roster is better than ours was when we were in our first year up.

They are averaging over 50 points a game against their schedule.

Their offense has been impressive. That QB has been good.

Would love nothing more than for the team to make this a statement game and hold JMU to one score while we hang 35+.

JMU is no slouch of an FCS team and they are similar to us in that it's not a huge leap to the higher level. It would really suck though if their transition was seamless. We really need to bring our total game against them.

I look at JMU much like I looked at us after two games. We score 61 at home and lose, then go on the road and score 17 and win. JMU played an average at best MTSU offense and a bad defense. Norfolk State is a bad FCS team. So I’m having difficulty in assessing how they will do with their first conference road game. Their QB is good and we have trouble with running QBs. Their coach is very good and he will have them ready. This is a huge step up over their first two opponents. Our OL has shown that they can handle some good DLs so far. We should be able to run on them. Their fans are like us in that they are concerned with the secondary. Control the clock and make them stop the run and then beat them over the top. Should be a fun game.

Saw where JMU's QB leads the nation with the most td passes without an interception at 9td passes and 0 interceptions. He completes about 66% of his passes so the guy is accurate and doesn't make mistakes with the ball. Effective pass defense always starts with pressure. Sadly, we have been very poor at getting backfield pressure with just our D Ends, we only seem to get pressure when we bring our LBs on a blitz and you can't do that always because it leaves a gap that a good QB can find a receiver for a short game (or long if we miss the tackle). The difference I see with this years' pass defense is that our D ends are not getting home so we don't have that extra LB dropping back into coverage and being there to make a tackle or disrupt the pass. Without the pressure, our dbs are having to hold coverage longer and that just isn't a good recipe for success for any DB. I worry about this game because they seem to have an offense that we are currently struggling to defend. Need more pressure from the D Ends and the rest should take care of itself.

The lack of desired pressure from our DEs is a by product of having bigger DEs than we have had in the past.

I have heard that excuse as well and I don't buy it at all. All the big boys in college ball have bigger DE and they still get pressure. Our lack of getting pressure is because our current DEs haven't learned/developed/perfected (whatever word anyone wishes to choose) the technique necessary for them to get pressure. Some DEs have quick first steps to get the edge, some have good hand technique and others just out physical....there are many other techniques and I am not a coach but it is clear that currently our guys haven't figured out their individual strengths that will allow them to get consistent backfield pressure. This is not meant to disparage our DEs in any way shape or form. Just pointing out that they are young as far as experience goes and will get better with time as they perfect their individual game strengths.

I was speaking merely of the ride time. Not the time staring at the roller coaster in awe, watching the point of view videos, discussing why it's the biggest and baddest roller coaster there is, and standing in line for another ride.
