ODU at ECU
ODU at ECU
Trolling over at Boneyard Banter and the ECU fans are disappointed in the number of tickets that ODU has bought for their first home game. Mention of the App games and that ODU is way short of the number of fans that we brought even though ODU is moving to CUSA and only 2+ hours away.

Re: ODU at ECU
Not sure about last year but was @ 10,000 to 12,000 the time we played ECU a couple of years before that, and may have been more because App fans were buying even ECU fans tickets.
This other article that links to this article states:
"As of Wednesday afternoon, ODU had sold 1,443 tickets for the Aug. 31 opener at East Carolina. The school has set aside an additional 1,000 tickets for students, more than 300 for the band and cheerleaders and 500 for families of players and ODU staff members."
App State 7 hours away from East Carolina sells up to 10,000 to 12,000 tickets, yet ODU has only actually sold 1,443 tickets. Same weekend, Labor Day. Unbelievable!
Here is a link , from yesterday, to that other article from the ODU blog that I mentioned:

Re: ODU at ECU
goes to show how smart the former ECU AD Holland was. Even before we started playing them, Holland spent years trying to get a series started with App. He realized, long before anyone else did, that our fan base was just as passionate and supportive as ECUs. This is why he fought to bring us into USA, he saw the potential for a great rivalary. Its also shows not only how smart Holland is, but basically what idiots they have running UNCC. They cant see how profitable a game with App would be.

Re: ODU at ECU
This isn't too surprising to me. ODU has no football tradition and therefore has no past football history with any school. I bet their fans never traveled much to the CAA schools either. To them ECU is just some out of state school in which they have no rivalry. Now, if they have just as bad of a showing at Virginia Tech I will be surprised.

We (the fans) had a good showing at Vaaaaah Tech, as well.

Re: ODU at ECU
It is surprising how few tickets ODU has actually sold, but an ODU fan offered an explanation on the CSNBBS board. Basically, it appears that there was an administrative SNAFU and they changed the donation requirements to get the away tickets, so (he claims) the ODU fans have gone directly to ECU and Stub Hub to purchase tickets. I'm not sure I completely buy it, but I don't doubt that an administrative issue might have impacted their internal sales.
Another factor is that ODU has three other "big draw" FBS games on the schedule (@ Maryland the following week, also @UNC and @ Pitt). Fans are choosing those games over the ECU games. I think this is probably a bigger factor than the administrative SNAFU.
I wouldn't write off the Monarchs just yet. Stuff happens.

Re: ODU at ECU
Their schedule makes it appear that a least a few of the Power 5 don't mind playing an easy team. Let's see how the ticket sales goes for these other games as well.Yosef84 wrote:It is surprising how few tickets ODU has actually sold, but an ODU fan offered an explanation on the CSNBBS board.
