Montgomery Bowl

Unread post by JTApps1 » Mon Aug 19, 2013 2:14 pm

The SBC and MAC have a new bowl in place starting in 2014. The new Montgomery Bowl will be held in the Cramton Bowl stadium in downtown Montgomery. ESPN owns the rights to the bowl (they own 8 other game and are also trying to create a new bowl in Boca Raton) so it will obviously be carried on either ESPN or ESPN2. From what I can gather it will be the #3 team from both conferences facing off. The city put a lot of money into the stadium (it needed it), and it now looks to be a pretty nice setup similar to El Cid.

I was really hoping for a bowl game in Charleston. They need to add 10k seats though.

6 hours from Charlotte isn't a bad trip, but not much else to do in Montgomery.

Watching the Blue Gray game was a Christmas day tradition at our home. Really glad the city of Montgomery saved and improved this landmark facility. It would be pretty cool to watch the Apps play there.

Trent Jones Trail golf courses, (if you play golf) could make it a great golf + football weekend.

This is an honest question. Are these new bowls replacing bowls or are they just going to keep adding bowls till every team with a uniform gets to play in one.

Yes they will. At least 3rd place will get you something now.

Like making the FCS playoffs is hard...

Some people will gripe about anything FBS related.

Has nothing to do with FCS. We are no longer FCS so don't know what your point is. It has to do with whether or not a bowl is going to have any meaning. If we were to win the SBC title, should we have the "reward" of playing the 6th place team from CUSA? Is our challenge to play a team that is probably.500? Even worse do we want to be in a position where we don't win it and end up playing a team that is sub .500? If we keep adding these bowls there will not be enough teams with winning records to fill them.
I'll tell you this. The first time we play a team in a bowl that has 4 or 5 wins people are going to be asking how the heck we get back to FCS. We should not be happy about more bowls we should be looking to be good enough to make bowls with better competition. Don't be crying about wanting to play better competition and then say more bowls are good. The number of bowls is why people are putting less stock in them all the time. It just waters down the competition.

Did they change the six win rule to be bowl eligible?

I don't know but my point is that if they keep adding bowls they will have no choice, they will run out of teams.

There isn't a lack of deserving teams in the G5 schools. The problem is the P5 conferences have 7 or 8 teams going to bowls taking up most of the slots. The only .500 teams getting in are from the 'big boys." The bowls we play in will most likely be against 7-10 win teams from the MAC or CUSA.

Based on your track record of Chicken Little, "Sky is Falling" style of posting - I'm going to go ahead and disagree.

My enjoyment and excitement of seeing App in a bowl game will far outweigh the record of our opponent.

More football = Good.

Does any of the bowl mean anything? I mean I keep hearing that they won't mean anything if they adding bowls, but the only reason most of the teams play in bowls anyway is because their conference has an auto bid or because they are ranked by someone and not necessarily based on playing.

I'd just as soon see App play a bowl that doesn't mean anything as seeing a bowl that is for the "College Championship" (based on sportswriters, couches and computers rankings of course).

My thought is they all mean something to the people that watch them and if no one watches them they won't have them.

I know I may be somewhat alone in this but I can't see why anyone cares if Ala beats ND for example.

24 of 118 FCS teams make the playoffs = 21%

In 2014, there will be 38 bowl games.

76 of 122 FBS teams will make bowls = 64%

There's nothing in the OP's statement that indicates this had anything to with FCS vs. FBS. It has to do with the ridiculous number of bowl games.

If we play in it, I'll be happy and I'll go if I can, but that in no way decreases the ridiculousness of 38 bowl games, and additional ones proposed.

There is a natural comparison between the two because the FCS is where we came from and that is ultimately the measure of progress. Bcoach poos on the FBS whenever he can and he does so because he prefers to stay in the FCS. It was absolutely relevant.

I mention the watered down FCS playoff because it's similarly diluted with teams that have no business playing there. Another point some of you anti-progress folks seem to throw to the wayside is the invaluable benefit of exposure. Even if we're playing in THE lowest, sub .500 forgettabowl, we will be garnering more national respect, money, and brand recognition that anything available in the FCS aside from a monumental BCS upset.

A chance to play on a national stage in a cool new city to represent our new conference is a good thing. The sour grapes some of you STILL display by spinning it to the negative are very unbecoming.

I am very sorry but you are the one who is hung up on FCS. You are the one who continually brings it up. I didn't like the move but that is ancient history. I understand why we did it and have said so many times. It is over. I am talking about FBS. The number of bowls is ridiculous and having to lose money on them is ridiculous. I want our level of FBS to be better than it is because that is where we are. I don't want to have more bowls to be able to play in them I want to be good enough to play in the ones there already are. I don't really care what FCS does any more. I have left FCS behind me, you should try and do the same.

How does that percentage work out for G5 teams?

I realize I'm probably wasting my time to even respond to this because you already have everyone neatly lumped into some preconceived category. I am far from anti-progress. I am excited about joining the SBC and I am looking forward to what it brings. That doesn't change the fact that the sheer number of bowl games is ridiculous and unsustainable. It is entirely possible that there will not be 76 bowl-eligible teams. That is my only point. The market is oversaturated.

Where you ever got the idea that I have any sour grapes to spread around is completely beyond me.
