It’s not a question of doing a better job in the portal. Until we get the transfer issues corrected within the University system, we are going to miss on some guys that would likely come to App if they didn’t have to lose credits.
We are in need of someone to take over the maintenance of the MMB. Yosef has done it for a long time, and we are grateful for all he has done, but life happens and he no longer has the time to devote to its upkeep. If anyone here is interested in helping to keep the board running, please let me know via DM.

Would that not be a part of "doing a better job"?

Regarding the marriage analogy...are you speaking from experience? Or just theoretically?AppWyo wrote: ↑Wed Jan 26, 2022 1:39 pmI agree, we need to meet the needs of the players committed to App first and then address the needs with the transfer portal. It is sort of like changing spouses, you may think you are getting a better deal, but in the end it is cheaper to stay with what you have. If you notice all the players that App has picked up are players that have ties to Appalachian and that is the way it should be. One bad apple can ruin the whole barrel.
Might not be a stretch to say you may get some pushback from the Peanut Gallery here.

Re: Clark: "We can't live in the transfer portal"
Transfer Portal, in today's college FB, is another source for players. My personal preference is that we are so outstanding at recruiting HS kids so the portal is non-existent to us. But that is living a dream. A coach needs to find players that give us the best chance to win (good players, good for culture, good in the community, good in the classroom)...if by land, if by sea, if by HS, if by transfer portal...
..that is the HC and Asst. Coaches job. If transfer portal brings in better chance to win with above criteria, the existing players need to pick up their game. Welcome to the real world....

Re: Clark: "We can't live in the transfer portal"
I don’t look at as such. The current situation puts us in a situation where we are having to take guys that are way down our wish list or taking guys that are just looking for a spot. We had two guys that we wanted and the players wanted to come here but it wasn’t academically feasible for the player. Those guys went to P5s and are starting.Stonewall wrote: ↑Mon Nov 14, 2022 6:37 pmWould that not be a part of "doing a better job"?

The Atlanta Braves have shown the difference between farm-built teams and bought teams. 90's Braves brought in a few key pieces via free agency, but the fan-favorite core pieces were farmed, Glavine, Avery, Andruw and Chipper Jones, etc. The Braves dynasty dominated even though they only nabbed one ring. Then mid-2000's they shifted to trying to buy it for the next ten+ years, and that blew up in other faces. They've reverted back to their 90's farm-building blueprint five ish years ago, and the results have spoken for themselves.
Build the farm. Only go to market when necessary.

Win with all LEGAL options...or be replaced. This is the world we live in and the one the players of college sports will live. Appalachian University better embrace it or plan to have mediocre teams. I really dislike the portal and NIL but if we stay in this level we better embrace both.

I don't know for sure, but I think it is a UNC System thing.

The 1995 Braves also had Greg Maddox, John Smoltz, Fred McGriff, Jeff Blauser, marquis Grissom, and more as key contributors, ALL were acquired via trades. Not from the farm system. In fact the Braves only elevated to the playoffs in ‘92 and later by supplementing the farm talent with trades and free agency.
Let’s not rewrite history

also shawn... 8 out of our last 10 offers have gone out to juco kids. i know it's not transfer portal, but pretty similar. Our last 20 offers have gone out to our glaring needs...hope we can land some of them. OL, DL, Secondary.

JuCos are easier to get in to App and they have played snaps versus some of these portal options.311neers wrote: ↑Tue Nov 15, 2022 9:16 am"we can't live in the transfer portal"

Re: Clark: "We can't live in the transfer portal"
My opinion is like the free agency and trading in all major league sports changed the way teams managed their talent, college sports has to adapt to more flexible movement of student athletes. You still will have traditional recruiting and development but the portal has to be used effectively to compete. These changes also impact how you manage your home grown talent as they will have more options as they develop.

Juco isn't the transfer portal. And until we relax the transfer credits, I'd expect to go the Juco route more often than transfer portal.311neers wrote: ↑Tue Nov 15, 2022 9:16 am"we can't live in the transfer portal"

I hope the "App State Way" also includes some of the Marine Corps slogan "Improvise, Adapt, and Overcome". The college landscape has changed. With the COVID years and the changes regarding transfers we need a plan of how to utilize. Look, I'm not for shopping every year, and we should be good at developing talent, but we do need to learn how to be able to pick and choose to fill specific needs each year.

Re: Clark: "We can't live in the transfer portal"
As it has been stated numerous times, the coaches are doing this. The issue is that the current transfer policy around credits creates a situation where they are working with one hand tied behind their back. No disrespect to Lawson or Clarke, but if App had an easier path for transfers, then those guys aren’t playing and our record might look different.Longrifle28 wrote: ↑Tue Nov 15, 2022 9:38 amI hope the "App State Way" also includes some of the Marine Corps slogan "Improvise, Adapt, and Overcome". Re: Clark: "We can't live in the transfer portal"
I equate the transfer portal to the One and Done NBA rules change in the 2000s
Teams like Duke, Carolina and Kentucky had to decide if they wanted to adapt to the new one and done culture or stick to their guns with 4 year recruits who "fit the program"
Eventually the figured it out and came to a good middle ground..
"Fit is important at a place such as Duke, with its tradition, history of developing leaders and rigorous academics.
"When we recruit, even with the kids we know are going to be one-and-done … we felt like they fit the profile of the kind of guys we want," Duke assistant coach Jeff Capel says. "Along with that, you have to have a mix of guys who are going to be long term. If you look at the history of our program, the really, really good teams, the Final Four teams and championship teams, they've had really good upper-class leadership."

Yes it has been stated several times, and I include that particular challenge as part of what we have to adapt and overcome....AppSt94 wrote: ↑Tue Nov 15, 2022 9:44 amAs it has been stated numerous times, the coaches are doing this. Re: Clark: "We can't live in the transfer portal"
I guess my statement is missing that it isn’t something that we can easily overcome without the efforts of the academic side of App.Longrifle28 wrote: ↑Tue Nov 15, 2022 10:57 amYes it has been stated several times, and I include that particular challenge as part of what we have to adapt and overcome....AppSt94 wrote: ↑Tue Nov 15, 2022 9:44 amAs it has been stated numerous times, the coaches are doing this. Re: Clark: "We can't live in the transfer portal"
Is App’s problem with accepting credits the accreditation of the transferring school or the grades of the transferring student?
