If you're talking about this thread, the hate is on Drink for wasting a donors money simply because a QB had a lot of stars but nobody else was recruiting him...

They are courted and given access to decision makers but they aren't decision makers unless the decision maker is weak.

I think you're misreading what was stated. Drink used said donors money to fly to California to recruit DBG simply because he had 4 stars next to his name. There was a reason he had 4 stars and nobody was recruiting him. Drink didn't care and essentially "stole" the donors money (not really stole, because it was agreed upon). Drink was just trying to prove he could recruit since that was his perceived weakness at prior schools.

So, in this case, the donor that paid for that recruiting trip probably doesn't think it was worth it.. because it wasn't.

I think there are two separate points being made:

1 - Donor dollars could be used more effectively (okay point taken move on)
2 - The real point was that Drink preferred to demonstrate that he could take our program and recruit nationally and that he was able to pull in a 4 star QB. We had coaches that identified McCall and knew he would be a great QB, but he chose himself over the program. It worked for him and we paid for it literally and figuratively.

Sounds like Drink just invested money in a recruit to make the team better. Reinvesting in your “company” is the way companies succeed. Happens all the time in life. Still, Drink produced the best team we’ve ever had.
