I don't see any comparison at all between what he wrote and this board. For one, I haven't seen anyone here decalre the season over. I also haven't seen anyone make up things that are blatantly false and publish them as fact. Hardin is a hack with an axe to grind. He saw his chance to take a bunch of cheap shots and he did so.

I will confidently say that there is more doom and gloom on this board than in his article. There is more negativity on this board than in his article. A lot of the posters on this board is writing off this season.

What does that say to me? I call it a double standard.

I get the News & Record, but I don't always read Ed Hardin's articles. He is a little wordy for me and a lot of the topics he writes about is not interesting to me.

But I've met Ed Hardin once. It was the year after I resigned as the boys' tennis coach at Page HS in Greensboro. That year, one of the current players, my former player, committed suicide after the start of the season. The very next home match, I was invited to attend a memorial honoring that player's life. Ed was there, I talked to him for a bit, and he wrote a spectacular article that was published the next day. I will always respect him for that.

As for the haters, let's look at ourselves and see what kind of image we are projecting before we start criticizing others for projecting the exact same image.

While the hate continues, I'll take the high road.
My only complaint with his article is, and has been, the inaccuracies. If he's a journalist, he should strive for complete accuracy. His little quips on Twitter were also unprofessional. Other than that, he's free to write a doom and gloom piece...just be accurate.

When all is said and done, I see no reason to buy the paper he writes for (and if I had a subscription I would write the editor and tell them why I was cancelling) and I won't read his articles online.

Newspapers survive off of circulation and I bet no one is buying his rag because of his trashing APP, but when people leave because of it they'll know.

The booing is disappointing. No need to boo our own.
Never understood the mindset of booing college players and even if it was intended for the staff It was totally uncalled for. People seem to have a void between the ears. Things like possible recruits in the stadium - which there were Saturday - and the negative impact it might have on them doesn't even enter their minds.

He's a drama queen and obviously has an axe to grind but the article wasn't too far off the mark in my opinion. This program is in trouble. Our on the field performance has declined every season since the big coaching shuffle. The coaches that were hired were not of the same caliber as the coaches we lost. I do not know who is at fault for those decisions.

Some say our recruiting is also so to blame. I don't know the nuts and bolts of recruiting. Maybe the coaches that left made a big impact on recruiting. I again do not know whee the fault lies. Maybe it is a combination of factors, but they have to be identified and remedied. I do know it has all happened on Charlie Cobbs watch. I think he has had ample opportunity to make his mark on the basketball program and it has been a complete debacle. Is it Cobb, was it Jerry Moore, the loss of assistants? What is the problem and even more importantly what is the answer?

I'm sure that Ed has some redeeming qualities. I really don't expect every columist to throw their full support behind App. Ed is a WCU alum, and a UNC fan. It is pretty obvious that he has been waiting a long time to spew some venom towards the Apps. We gave him the opportunity and he took it.

My problem with Ed is that he is incredibly presumtuous in his extrapolation of the two games so far. He takes an extreme position and supports it with half truths. Actually, "half" is probably generous in this case. If the season were to continue like the past two Saturdays and he wrote this article in November, it would be harder to argue. I don't think that will happen. On the other hand, I'm a complete homer and I tend to err on the side of optimism where my Apps are concerned.

Regarding the similar statements on this board, I really can't argue. There are some pretty upset people and a few are taking it to the extreme. I can't help but notice that some of the more extreme posts are by new posters with 10 or fewer posts. I tend to completely ignore those as bogus rantings of lurkers. I would not doubt that some of them are opposing fans in stealth. I think that most actual fans will come around once they see something to get excited about.

The doulbe standard is pretty pervasive. We have some who zone in on the "Alwasy Attack" slogan and complain that it isn't so. Then we have posts complaining about going for 2, or throwing a long pass downfield with time expiring in the first half. In restrospect, both were questionable calls, but both were attempts to aggressively take control of the momentum. Had they succeeded, we might be having a very different discussion tonight. We have had 8 straight years of outstanding football with only a few setbacks, but no sustained dips. This is painful, but it was bound to happen sooner or later. It is all the more painful because it was not anticipated. I still think this dip is about over. (Queue the "rose colored glasses comment).

Ed's comments seem extreme because he is a journalist. His article sounds like it was written by a committe formed from the Catamount Pride Board. We generally expect journalists to have a higher standard than that. Personally, I don't care what he has to say. It was irritating when I read it, but it hasn't ruined a single hour of my life. I just want to get on with the business of cooking up that crow for his dinner.

Ed sent a reply to my email. Thanked me for my opinion and informed me that he had two daughters who went to App.

I'll be honest, I still can't believe he bothered to write an article that was not about an in-state ACC school. I am willing to give him a little allowance since the ACC is HQed in Greensboro and though that does not add much to the local economy the bb tourney does help. But with that said, I stand by my first sentence.

When I clicked the link, I was wondering, "Who is Ed Hardin, and why does his opinion matter?" With the name, I assumed big booster/sponsor/donor/etc. Well, now I know who Ed Hardin is, but I'm still not certain why I should care what he says.

When he writes something positive about App, post the link and I'll read it then. I may even click a few ads while I'm there. Otherwise, I'll pass.
