Re: Update on NFL info
Out of the class of receivers who left in 21 who could have guessed the Virgil would be the one still on an NFL roster?AppSt94 wrote: ↑Fri Aug 04, 2023 2:38 pmAppalachian State

Re: Update on NFL info
Or he couldn't get the blocking required in our scheme down...
From a God given talent stand point, he was head and shoulders ahead of every other receiver. Problem is, he played 6 years (5 maybe?) at App. That was more than half of his total playing time. So, he didn't get the nuances of blocking, running the right route against press coverage, sitting in zones, etc.

Sutton would still be there if not for some issues beyond talent.AppSt94 wrote: ↑Fri Aug 04, 2023 5:57 pmOf the four, he had the prototypical NFL body and speeed.Mjohn1988 wrote: ↑Fri Aug 04, 2023 5:42 pmOut of the class of receivers who left in 21 who could have guessed the Virgil would be the one still on an NFL roster?AppSt94 wrote: ↑Fri Aug 04, 2023 2:38 pmAppalachian State

Re: Update on NFL info
I get it and always was disappointed in that and lack of improvement as a route runner but I always thought we could have used his deep speed more. He could have been a decoy or sent on a deep route and forced teams to bring safeties over to help CBs or take advantage if they don't and throw him a long pass. I just got the feeling we could have done more with him and it seems weird he was not a top 3 option for our OC and QB but he is the only one in the NFL. You can't teach speed and it feels like we wasted his a little bit.AppStateNews wrote: ↑Fri Aug 04, 2023 10:03 pmOr he couldn't get the blocking required in our scheme down...

Re: Update on NFL info
It depends on on coaching philosophy. We had 2, 5 and 14 that were pretty damn good. It was not only route running...it was also hands. The 3 above had much better hands IMO. Also, IMO opinion, the coaches put the best players on the field for what our passing philosophy has been.
Willie Parker rarely sniffed the field at UNC..but had a decent NFL career. It happens.

That is an excellent example of fit with Willie Parker.BambooRdApp wrote: ↑Sat Aug 05, 2023 6:47 amIt depends on on coaching philosophy. We had 2, 5 and 14 that were pretty damn good. Re: Update on NFL info
That is true about the hands but I just hoped that we would find some ways to get more than 17 offensive touches to a future NFL player with 4.3 speed.BambooRdApp wrote: ↑Sat Aug 05, 2023 6:47 amIt depends on on coaching philosophy. The issue with the Willie Parker example is that he played for a P5 where that happens and we are a G5. Plus, the Willie Parker example is the only one people bring up because it just does not happen often. Matt Cassel did it but he was playing behind a first round pick and that was also a P5.

Have found nothing recently in front of a pay wall. I'm curious if he can make it.

Re: Update on NFL info
Every depth chart I have seen has him 5th string so far. He could make it but if the depth charts are accurate he is going to need impressive preseason game performances to climb up the depth chart.Black Saturday wrote: ↑Sun Aug 06, 2023 7:46 amHave found nothing recently in front of a pay wall. Re: Update on NFL info
Good news for him is he's a better game player than practice player. Bad news for him is that's not what's going to make the team in the NFL...AppStFan1 wrote: ↑Sun Aug 06, 2023 1:37 pmEvery depth chart I have seen has him 5th string so far. A player like him has to dominate against the 3s and 4s in practice/camp and then do well in preseason to make it. I hope he puts together a strong rest of his camp and preseason and at least makes the practice squad.

Re: Update on NFL info
That is so true. I would love to see him make it somehow because he has the talent. I maintain he has mid round type talent but we all know why he went undrafted and I hope he overcomes those issues. I would imagine his attitude changed after the draft and I hope he now has that chip on his shoulder he had when he first got to App.AppStateNews wrote: ↑Sun Aug 06, 2023 2:02 pmGood news for him is he's a better game player than practice player. Re: Update on NFL info
Hodges is 2nd team RG with Jags. It looks like he has a good shot to make it.
