AppState's 2-1-6 men's soccer squad, currently #8 in the the NSCAA South Region, travels to Elon on Saturday evening for a 7 PM match with Darren Powell's nationally ranked 8-1-1 Phoenix side. The 21st ranked Phoenix are also ranked this week at #2 in the NSCAA South Region. They come into the match having won three straight matches. Their premiere win was a 1 - 0 home pitch win over #9 Wake Forest.
The Apps have a win and three draws to show for their last four matches. Their home pitch draw with # 17 Furman caught the attention of the NSCAA pollsters and boosted them into the South Region rankings. A win or draw at Elon could further boost the Apps into the national top 25.
Powell has his Phoenix roster filled with ODP players and he is one of the nation's most respected coaches. His team will be well-prepared for Saturday's match. The Mountaineer defense will need an "all hands on deck" performance to give the team a chance for a clean win. It goes without saying that this will be a war--an extremely physical match. A lot will be on the line.
The Apps maintain an all-time series advantage over Elon by a 7-6-2 advantage. Last year, Elon escaped from Ted Mackorell Field with a 1-0 win.
