I’m not here to rain on the Biff Poggi love fest, but he went out last year and did the same thing. How many games did they win? My point is that guys are in the portal for a myriad of reasons. Coming from a P5 isn’t the automatic recipe for success.

It’s a new game, and I just hope we aren’t asleep at the wheel. It seems we are just trying to minimize our losses while Concord is getting accolades from around the nation for being aggressive. Not saying they are getting All-Americans, but I think we’d be pretty excited if we were bringing in SEC and Clemson linemen.appstate24 wrote: ↑Mon Dec 11, 2023 6:55 pmHate, saying this, but unc concord is killing it right now in the portal. Not sure if Biff is using his own money to buy a new team or what, but I’ve seen 4-5 offensive lineman commit all from the SEC or Clemson. They just got the QB from Florida that entered the portal, among others.
GO APPS!!
Like others, I’m hopeful those making decisions for us have done their homework.

A coach can get a lot done when there’s no bowl game to prepare for. I am confident that our coaches are on the ball and announcements will come immediately after we beat the RedHawks.

Last year the three and niners had 12 “P5” transfers in from the portal. And have 18 transfers out this year.MAD Doctor wrote: ↑Tue Dec 12, 2023 8:51 pmIt’s a new game, and I just hope we aren’t asleep at the wheel. Re: Other SB schools losing players to Transfer Portal
Most of those "P5" players transferring to Charlotte are from teams that were not very good last year. I think we all know there isn't that big of a gap between the G5 and the bottom of the P5.Saint3333 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 12, 2023 10:11 pmLast year the three and niners had 12 “P5” transfers in from the portal. As a resident of Concord I wish people had a different name for UNCC. It's located in Mecklenburg County, not Cabarrus and I have a dislike of everything Mecklenburg.

Re: Other SB schools losing players to Transfer Portal
I have probably asked this before but it would be interesting to know the breakdown of transfers (say last year) of guys who went from P5 to G5, G5 to P5 or even FCS to G5/P5 and saw increased playing time. I don't think every P5 transfer into App became a huge contributor. I know we have had a couple of good successes but it's not a slam dunk. The stat I'd love to see is pre portal playing time versus post portal. Obviously you first take out the transfer guys who simply didn't land anywhere and were out of football. Of those who did transfer how many were perceived to have upgraded? Of that group how many saw playing time increase? I think of all the portal transfers there is a percentage who simply made a lateral move- like many of the quarterbacks.

Skol! After his last personal foul penalty, Bucky has gone to football Valhalla!ASUFan4863 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 12, 2023 2:39 pmIt will be interesting what happens but we added Gentry and Scroggs last year in preparation for this. They will likely be the 2 new starting guards. We need 2 more OL in the portal and that can be best available. Either a center and tackle or 2 tackles.
Ultimately, the answer may be within the roster or even an incoming freshman. Can our staff and young OL make a step forward to be the next man up? I sure hope so.

Re: Other SB schools losing players to Transfer Portal
Those are interesting questions but I feel like we can take more portal players up to 88-90 range even if we are at 85 right now. Rosters numbers have ways of working out. Some players enter the portal or decide to move on from football at this time of year, we saw a couple commits flip to Clemson, and then we will see more attrition when players hit the portal after spring practice. Even if we are at 85 now and add 3-5 more players we should still not in danger of going over because the staff should have conversations with players at the end the spring and see a few more transfer down to FCS.Bigdaddyg1 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 19, 2023 5:05 pmTomorrow will be interesting- National Signing Day. Re: Other SB schools losing players to Transfer Portal
The ULL QB is being reported to have received $750k+ NIL offer, ULL had $400k to try to keep him. Just impossible to keep a decent player these days for most G5 programs.

Re: Other SB schools losing players to Transfer Portal
Anyone have knowledge of the ins and outs of these NIL deals. For example are they performance based, only apply as long as you are actively playing, the deals aren't just "hey here is $750 or $400" - one time deposit no take backs right? Before Joey was a big name in Boone - River Street Ale house promoted "Joey Wings" and before the season Burger had the Cardinal Burger - Burger, what do these small deals look like compared to the big numbers of paying to get a player like $750?

Hopefully they’re learning how to pay taxes as an independent contractor for the companies using their NIL. Unpaid taxes come back to bite.

Re: Other SB schools losing players to Transfer Portal
$750k is like NFL minimum wage. Do some of these collectives value these dudes that much and are willing to pay them as a backup? If you aren't on a video game, a cereal box or hawking for a heating and air company how exactly does NIL apply?
