It may be that, but it has nothing to do with capitalism.

Re: Portal season (Abson, Spillers, etc)
I have absolutely NO inside/outside/anyside information but I just have a gut feeling that with almost the entire team in the portal something is going on there to cause this exodus - something other than "greed" is causing some of these departures -

Why not? These kids, not all but some, are chasing what they believe they are worth on the open market.

I feel for kids/young men getting bad advice. It can’t hurt though. Might as well risk it and see what you get.

I wouldn’t use the word greed. It’s what was created. Coaches have the ability to seek employment at a better paying job so now the kids can too. It’s the nature of the beast that has been created. The goose and the gander are now on a level playing field. Certainly it all isn’t about money. There are probably some acedemic casualties, guys looking for playing time and guys that just aren’t good enough to play at this level that saw that they were getting recruited over. It happens all the time. It used to be unfair to the kids so we have this system now.

I’m sure that there is a plethora of parents/handlers/friends that are chirping in their ear that the grass is greener somewhere else. The portal takes and the portal will give.

But a coach just isn’t going to leave to see what else is out there. Coaches only get poached or fired. Players can just leave and search for opportunities. That’s the difference. Maybe the portal should just be that you can’t leave unless you get an offer from another school.AppSt94 wrote: ↑Wed Mar 27, 2024 5:48 pmI wouldn’t use the word greed. It’s what was created. I have a feeling we won’t be playing 9 deep next year. Just a hunch I have.

Re: Portal season (Abson, Spillers, etc)
That would require a change to the rules. I’m not suggesting that the rules are clear cut and aren’t circumvented, but a school isn’t supposed to contact a player until he is in the portal. Say Abson and or Spiller were allowed to pursue other opportunities without leaving. How does the coach recruit a possible open spot? I’d rather them jump in the portal and absorb the risk of their fate.311neers wrote: ↑Wed Mar 27, 2024 5:55 pmBut a coach just isn’t going to leave to see what else is out there. Haha honestly forget there were rules. There’s no rules!!! There’s one rule! I think that’s a commercial.AppSt94 wrote: ↑Wed Mar 27, 2024 6:06 pmThat would require a change to the rules. Re: Portal season (Abson, Spillers, etc)
Not sure I agree with this take. Could simply be that he looked around the room and saw only 3 kids for a team and figured he out to get out before the boat completely sinks. But who really knows, we are all speculating. I am sure this portal will turn out to be much like the football portal in that there will be more kids enter than spots available. Holding out hope that Kerns stays and some of those that enter realize the opportunities aren't as good as App and return.AppStFan1 wrote: ↑Wed Mar 27, 2024 5:29 pmIf either of them go then I am going to assume Kerns is not coming back. There is no way every player leaves but our coaching staff is returning. I am keeping an eye on Harcum.NattyBumppo'sRevenge wrote: ↑Wed Mar 27, 2024 4:45 pmHarcum and Tate might be the best players returning in the Sun Belt

I am still upset that Kerns or Gillen haven't made a statement that the SHIP is okay.
The only good news is it is happening all over college basketball.
I was the kind of kid that would have stayed with coach Kerns.... times have changed
Btw, I paid for my own private college education so money would have been a factor.

Just saw that Harcum has entered the portal. Seriously, can we even put a team on the floor next year? For any coach?

He should make the jump now IMO. Why risk coming back and ruining your chance to step up. Go out on top….orrrrrr return and run it back, with no players.

Re: Portal season (Abson, Spillers, etc)
Need to implement contracts for players with consequences if others want to “buy them out”, non-competes, etc. if they want to be treated like employees not students so be it.
Sad day.

Re: Portal season (Abson, Spillers, etc)
Understand the sentiment but here is the rub with contracts. Can you terminate a contract for a player that isn’t progressing into the player that we hoped he would? Let’s use Mantis for an example. He was limited offensively and a detriment on defense. Would he be worthy of being kept on contract? How do part ways? It seems like any solution has a counter that makes the solution difficult.

Re: Portal season (Abson, Spillers, etc)
looking across the league and country, this is the wildest portal we have seen yet and it's still only the beginning. This isn't an App hoops problem, or a Mid Major problem, top scorers and players from P5 schools are bolting or "testing the waters" as well.
Hopefully this off season is a rock bottom for college basketball as a whole, and the NCAA or powers that be begin to look for ways to right the ship
