Re: Portal season (Abson, Spillers, etc)
I will add maybe its an extreme elaborate April Fools joke and 90% of App players in the portal come back and it was all a ploy. That being said, is an April fools joke better than the deaf sound we hear about all of this. Trust is lost right now and how can it come back, even if it is all a big joke, - too much money at stake to be a joke, but maybe he did say go see what your worth and if you do better I love you and if you come back I love you. Season tickets would have exploded if we kept most of the names we have know for a few years, now it might be crickets in the gym again. Some kind of news needs to come out this week for sure.NattyBumppo'sRevenge wrote: ↑Thu Mar 28, 2024 9:08 amBeing the optimist, my hope is that Kerns, as a fairly young guy, is returning and encouraged his players to enter the portal. If they can better their situation, he supports them but has advised them that he will welcome them back in should they wish to return. But he gave them a deadline to return so that he can focus on rebuilding the roster. My guess is the deadline will fall in line with the end of the NCAA tournament. This is what I’m going with until he announces he’s leaving for CoC and taking the entire team with him.

Re: Portal season (Abson, Spillers, etc)
I would imagine we are going to have to offer a raise and extension in order to keep him beyond now. There is no way he stays without an extension and more than 325k or so now. I got the 325k from the most recent public article I could find. I am hoping we offer him a completely new deal so we can get a buyout in there.RaleighApp27609 wrote: ↑Thu Mar 28, 2024 7:58 amAnyone happen to know when the next contract negotiation is for Coach Kerns?

I know and I think we should be working on one. The current buyout is way too low but to go higher I know we would have to pay more. I would think to retain Kerns we would need to make him the highest paid coach in the Sun Belt, which he should be with the JMU coach gone.

No. Given his body of work, and his starting point, Kerns should make at least as much as Clark. He doesn't. After making the NCAAs, the athletic department sould have pushed season tickets. They didn't. We had a group of guys who seemed to really like each other and now basically they have all left when they could have been really good next season. So, no, I don't have faith in the athletic's administration.AppSt94 wrote: ↑Thu Mar 28, 2024 9:34 amYou just have no faith in the administration so you?appgrad95&97 wrote: ↑Thu Mar 28, 2024 9:30 amBased on what?????appstate24 wrote: ↑Thu Mar 28, 2024 9:26 amNone of us know what’s going on. A $1 million buyout is not keeping mid-majors away that have a history of being good in bball and making a change due to retirement or they had a recent bad choice in a coaching decision. Just my opinion.AppStFan1 wrote: ↑Thu Mar 28, 2024 9:39 amI know and I think we should be working on one. The current buyout is way too low but to go higher I know we would have to pay more. Re: Portal season (Abson, Spillers, etc)
He absolutely should! Kerns should have been making more than double what he did this year. I would be completely fine with Kerns making 1M going into next year. He has shown he can build a record-breaking team once and I think he could do it again. I want to win in basketball. Not only is it one of the best sports but we have an auto-bid into the national tournament if we win the title, unlike in football, and we can get massive publicity out of it. There needs to be a very strong commitment made to basketball starting now.appgrad95&97 wrote: ↑Thu Mar 28, 2024 9:40 amNo. Given his body of work, and his starting point, Kerns should make at least as much as Clark. Re: Portal season (Abson, Spillers, etc)
It won't keep all of them but will prevent most of them. Bottom line here is that Kerns has earned a massive raise and we should ask for a good buyout if we lose him.BambooRdApp wrote: ↑Thu Mar 28, 2024 9:46 amA $1 million buyout is not keeping mid-majors away that have a history of being good in bball and making a change due to retirement or they had a recent bad choice in a coaching decision. You're quite welcome. I didn't know my frustration with Gillin since the end of the 2019 football season was a secret. The thing about you that I really don't get is why my position is so unacceptable to you.AppSt94 wrote: ↑Thu Mar 28, 2024 9:42 amThank you acknowledging this. Abson, Spiller and Xavion did.NattyBumppo'sRevenge wrote: ↑Thu Mar 28, 2024 6:34 amI’m not Twitter or X. Have any of our basketball players posted the “I love App, thanks family, friends and fans for your support. I am entering the portal” post? I haven’t seen it reposted if they have, but all our football players do that.
The reason I ask, is that when football players post it, it feels final that they are not returning once going to the portal. If these guys aren’t posting this, it’s one of two things: 1. They are inconsiderate or 2. They don’t view it as a final decision.

Re: Portal season (Abson, Spillers, etc)
If #TeamClark had this many players leaving (81% of roster) after the season of success everyone would want him fired.
You can't compare this to JMU -- JMU DOES NOT HAVE A COACH CURRENTLY.
No winning team across the country with their coach STILL in place is having this big an issue.

Re: Portal season (Abson, Spillers, etc)
If Shawn Clark had a lot of players leaving I would wonder what is up and if he is planning to leave for sure. I think most people are wondering the same thing here. I know people on 247 are asking questions as well. In this case we know that Kerns could possibly be leaving and there is no guarantee that he will return.DenverOfTheEast wrote: ↑Thu Mar 28, 2024 11:05 amIf #TeamClark had this many players leaving (81% of roster) after the season of success everyone would want him fired.

One thing to keep in mind is that basketball has not had long term sustained success quite like football so the expectations are not quite the same. Kerns took over a program who had spent a decade being really bad and has made us a perennial top 3-4 team. He has won a regular season title, tourney title, and broken the school record for wins in a season.
A football team is a lot bigger so while the percentage of losses is not the same we have still lost close to 20 football players to the portal now. Players have a lot of reasons for leaving now. S

I honestly don’t care what your position on anything is. I am only interested in understanding why you have the opinion that you do. This allows me to gauge the origin of yours or anyone’s position to adequately apply the correct amount of credence. In your case, you seem to be so entrenched in your disdain for the current administration that I don’t feel that you are capable of accepting facts that refute your position. You have proven that over and over. I honestly don’t care if Doug kicked your wife or peed on your dog, or vice versa. There is a blind hatred that doesn’t allow you to be open to facts. That is all. Have a fantastic day. God bless.appgrad95&97 wrote: ↑Thu Mar 28, 2024 9:52 amYou're quite welcome. I didn't know my frustration with Gillin since the end of the 2019 football season was a secret.
