No, I'm just trying to figure out what actual on the field proof you can offer as to why App is such a significant upgrade in competition this week? I mean I think App is probably the better team than ODU, but so far of the evidence on the field this year I've seen you guys piddle around with a bad FCS team and then bite the curb against Clemson. ODU's only other game was a close loss to USC East that in a lot of ways they gagged. I honestly thought going into the week that was probably because USC East was going to be pretty bad, and then they made Kentucky bite the curb on the road so I'm not sure I can just write that off as ODU hanging around with a bad SEC team that overlooked them. To actually argue that App is a massive upgrade in competition over ODU this year with current evidence you'd pretty much need to count things that happened last year, which then would make the fact that you lost to them last year actually valid.AppSt94 wrote: ↑Wed Sep 11, 2024 11:55 amAre you one of those transitive property guys? If you lose two out of 3 to start the season you are staring at a 4-5 loss campaign. The pressure will ramp up with every loss to hire a new coach. That wears on everyone. Plus if you can’t beat a subpar ECU team the inevitable is a matter of time. You can’t underestimate the Clemson beat down.
On the flip side, go on a run and keep it to 2-3 losses and win the conference and the job is safe for possibly a new contract. Huge year for coach.

I realize that ECU can't help but be improved after 2 wins, but if APP is anything like preseason hype and coming off the national embarrassment at Clemson, then I think the Pirates go down with the ship.

Past couple years the Pirates have peaked in August and we caught them on the slide in that first game. I'd expect that trend to continue.

Re: Moving On to ECU
So why didn’t you just say all this to begin with? I mean, I still don’t thing you can look at what opponent A did against opponent B and assume what they will do against opponent C, but using what happened last year is lazy. First of all, while we lost that game in Norfolk, we changed our defensive scheme since then and are 7-2 using it. Secondly, it’s increasingly difficult to use year over results given the transfer portal and the subsequent roster turnover. ECU faced an ODU defense without their conference POY. That’s not to say that he alone makes the difference but a change in variables does affect results.b0ndsj0ns wrote: ↑Wed Sep 11, 2024 12:22 pmNo, I'm just trying to figure out what actual on the field proof you can offer as to why App is such a significant upgrade in competition this week? As Hap said, both teams will show us who they are on Saturday. ECU has some impressively gaudy numbers in terms of run defense. A look inside those numbers tells me that they are likely misleading and I don’t expect ECU to maintain anything near those numbers Saturday. ECU looks better for sure this year, but I stand by my statement that this is a massive step up to what the Pi-rates have faced thus far. If ECU is victorious this Saturday, then I tip my cap to you Sir.

We're #12 in the country right now in total defense. Only 1 G5 program has been better than that. Last year we finished #38 which was paired w/ literally the worst offense I've seen in my entire life. It's not unreasonable to believe we've got one of the best defenses in the G5.

Re: Moving On to ECU
The big intangible I see for this week's game is how our guys will get up off the mat after getting knocked down, are they going to be demoralized or are they going to be pissed off and take it out on the Pirates and make a statement? Knowing our guys it's gonna be the latter...

There is no need to unzip your pants amd fling your manhood around over being #12 after two games. You played a horribly outmanned, one dimensional FCS team and one FBS team that was even more inconsistent than your own offense.blunderbuss wrote: ↑Wed Sep 11, 2024 12:50 pmReading is fundamental. Re: Moving On to ECU
When you get your butt whipped one week, no matter the opponent, that impacts perception from other programs. I'm not shocked that ECU fans are optimistic about their chances. If we had beaten a middle of the road AAC like Tulsa last week (which ECU lost to in 2023) and ECU had lost by 40+ to anyone, this board would be predicting a three TD win (including myself).
It's week three, ECU has the better resume to date, still think App has more talent and depth though.
If ECU throws 2 or more INTs like he has both games App wins going away.

ECU has the better defense. App has the better QB. One will have to give in to the other.

Seems like rain and wind may be a factor. Maybe that helps ECU if they can't throw INTs?
May hurt us unless the OL improves on run blocking.

Wind played a part in Garcia’s INTS last week. You have to wonder if that could get into his head a little.

Re: Moving On to ECU
Pirates pass defense is much improved from last year. Garcia actually has time to set his feet and throw…instead of running for his life. Their defense was good last year and returned a bunch of starters.
Any fan in Black & Gold who assumes this one will be a cake walk better wake up. ECU has been dragged by App in the past two games and I doubt Houston has let his kids forget that. And count on Dowdy-Ficklen being wild on Saturday for

Where do you guys get the idea that ECU is subpar? They have offensive weapons, a veteran offensive line, a true four star corner, a seasoned front four, and a head coach with a lineage of winning.Pikapp79 wrote: ↑Mon Sep 09, 2024 8:39 amIf you lose two out of 3 to start the season you are staring at a 4-5 loss campaign. They were garbage last year, but this is the transfer portal era. They were only missing an offense last year and they now are back to the Air Raid.

Re: Moving On to ECU
I watched their game with ODU tonight and I have to say that I don’t really know what to think of them at this point. They beat a very overmatched Norfolk St team in week 1. Against ODU, they ran the ball 51 times for 183 yards. 3.6 avg. just like with ETSU, 63 yards came on one play. They had 14 drives and ran 89 plays. 5 drives ended in punts, 4 INTs and a botched end of the half possession. Two TDs and two FGs with one ending a drive that started at the ODU 20. The OL gave up 3 sacks and 8 TFLs. I think that they will get better through the year but the body of work thus far doesn’t lend me to declare them as any thing more than a work in progress.ericsaid wrote: ↑Wed Sep 11, 2024 8:13 pmWhere do you guys get the idea that ECU is subpar?
