Marshall..?

Unread post by canes_mj » Sun Sep 29, 2024 4:58 pm

First, yes I understand that in the scheme of what just happened, the Marshall game or any football game is trivial...I only post this question because I saw this mentioned in another thread...we have airplane tickets and hotel reservations...this was supposed to be a special trip for my son....and if the game isn't going to be played, I have not much time and limited options to try to get refunded. I'm only asking for info purposes...anyone have any info on if this game is going to be played?

Does the University have running water??

Does the university have electricity??

Are all the football program coaches and players and everyone in the program safe and accounted for??

Are the food service employees able to cook for the team during the week??

If you can answer YES to all 4 then the game possibly can go on, if NOT then go help someone get out of their driveway or house and stop playing on the YosefCabin.

You never learned to play well with others, did you?

Yes, mother of football player on the App State Parents for students FB page said their kid had to stay for practice.

I am thinking they may go online for a while. There are quite a few students whose apartments are total losses. There is not replacement housing unless all hotels participate..and they are housing emergency services from out of town.

We played through Covid so I imagine we'll play through this if the team can safely drive there.

At least we haven't lost the last 2 Saturdays, hope we make it 3 in a row.

Even though I'm skeptical at the moment.

There is no need to be hard on the guy, everyone is wondering the same thing. He said he has plane tickets, maybe he is traveling from the West Coast. It is a fair question and the earlier an announcement is made, the better.

Just based on info passed along on this very forum, it sounds like the answer to all of those questions is probably yes.

If I have learned anything from a long career dealing with catastrophes, and having spent months at a time in places cleaning up after hurricanes, floods, and tornados, it is that anything that can go back to normal should do just that and as soon as possible.

University athletics is such a small thing in the grand scheme of things. But symbolically it would be huge. I am glad to hear the football team is practicing, that the field hockey team won a game today, that the soccer team's game today has only been postponed 2 weeks, that the dining halls are open, and any other news that hints at normalcy.

UNC-A is out of class until 9 October. Online is clearly an option though this is the first I have heard of it.

I mentioned it in another feed but does the show go on? Yes, football is secondary but at the same time would App still fielding a team serve as a welcome distraction and even a rally point for the region if they continued to compete? Even if we can't have "home" games, I would think efforts could be made within the area to have home games on our behalf. Tulane did it after Hurricane Ida (Oklahoma even painted the Green Wave logo on their field so they had a true home game). Wake Forest, A&T, Bowman-Gray, you could even use North Wilkesboro Speedway as a location with the way it's set up and not scheduled to host anything after next weekend until the spring. By the looks of it, Wake Forest would be an ideal backup because for our next three home games, the Deacons have two away games and a bye week.

I know it's not at the top of the list of priorities, and I'm not trying make it so (especially after lighting up some Liberty fans this past weekend) but the school does have a full-time staff dedicated to it, a team of players and it's been well documented that teams coming from tragic situation can help with the healing process.

My son lives in a small place above the stadium (up Stadium Drive) beside him is an identical house. His had a tree fall on it but thankfully it wasn’t damaged. The other place not so much. Those two guys will have to find another place to live. How many apartments were ruined? Housing is at a premium to begin with in Boone. If there is a bright side to the season at least we don’t have a home game for almost a month. No chance the road situation will be fixed so logistics will be a nightmare if home games are attempted. The financial ramifications will be staggering.

I saw online where places behind Walmart (Bavarian village, etc) are being evicted. I would think there is going to be a lot of this. Even players.

Yes, that is correct. Have seen pictures posted and/or discussion on student family FB page. Cars lost, motorcycles lost, whole floor levels lost.
If not staying to volunteer, some students are heading home.

Son came home Friday. He debated staying as he has a job as well but with the uncertainty of electricity, food availability and other issues he decided to come home for the week. The mental aspects of this will be difficult for many. As far as school goes many of these students spent a year and a half going to school on their bed during Covid. They had finally gotten back to normalcy and now this. If they have to finish on line many have expensive leases not to mention financial aid that has been used for the semester.

I was thinking the same. WF would be a good location for the next few home games. I know we all want to be in Boone, but the less of us there is better for now.
