I think the overall point is Mayorkas comments on the hurricane fund should not have been articulated the way it was by him. It just led to fear mongering in relation to people will not get taken care of. If he had to do all over again, maybe he would.. hopefullyhapapp wrote: ↑Mon Oct 07, 2024 1:24 pmObviously I haven't. Re: High Country Hurricane Damage
That $100m is for rebuilding I-40, that will not be the total that will spent on the recovery in NC. The amount of money provided to those rebuilding has not even been accounted for yet. Moreover, these dollars don't come from the same pot. The level of disinformation surrounding this relief effort is astounding. Given the magnitude of this disaster, no doubt there will be frustrations about the speed at which things move and the mistakes made.Mjohn1988 wrote: ↑Mon Oct 07, 2024 1:36 pmI’m not sure how I managed this but I wrote the part that starts with “on the same day”Mjohn1988 wrote: ↑Mon Oct 07, 2024 1:34 pmhapapp wrote: ↑Mon Oct 07, 2024 1:16 pmI've seen no evidence to suggest otherwise.Saint3333 wrote: ↑Mon Oct 07, 2024 1:05 pmOn the same day the federal government announced $100,000,000 to rebuild I-40 it announced $145,000,000 to help “displaced” people in Lebanon. Re: High Country Hurricane Damage
I get what you’re saying but actually the money does come from the same pot. There is really only one pot for the federal government to get money from, the citizens. I understand that the $100million was for rebuilding I-40. It’s just hard to hear that we just spent so much money in Lebanon when the need is so great in our country, in our mountains, for our neighbors. When Government spends money for one thing it does actually mean there is less money for other things.hapapp wrote: ↑Mon Oct 07, 2024 2:01 pmThat $100m is for rebuilding I-40, that will not be the total that will spent on the recovery in NC. Re: High Country Hurricane Damage
You are basically correct. Except that the federal government will borrow to make up any shortfall and leave it to the next generations (yes generations with an s) to pay for. I suspect they made that commitment and announcement because the election is less than a month away and the Democrats have a Muslim issue within their base because of our support for Israel. Kamala can't afford to lose any of their traditional base. As someone said, the optics of this is terrible given our current situation in this country. But she's trying to win an election.Mjohn1988 wrote: ↑Mon Oct 07, 2024 2:16 pmI get what you’re saying but actually the money does come from the same pot. Local governments- Heroes , NCDOT and Hiway patrol the same . Feds slow decision on deployment of troops has been costly. Volunteers and organizations like SAMs Purse huge life saving impacts. I’m working Emergency Operations and living it.

Someone pointed out a huge difference in this response and the Katrina response is how many fed directed troops were on the ground quick to help for search and rescue. Granted NOLA was easier to get in and search quickly but there did seem to be a large delay in the response for the W NC and E TN mtns.

I live in Vilas along Old 421. Cove creek ravaged the valley. I have seen nothing but a fantastic coordinated effort by volunteers, blue ridge electric, cable cos, DOT , law enforcement, emergency personnel and FEMA. From day one it has been a great effort by all. We are already seeing much improvement. I quit bitching and rolled my sleeves up with everyone else out here.

I’ve been working rescue and recovery since it blew in , and blew us out. No public services until this weekend. I see the 80/20 rule in effect. Majority good to great , the rest not so much. The long term psychological effects of this are worrisome. PTSD is real.

Hey bro. Go see it for yourself. No one is doing anything like that. It’s just being VERY underreported by the media. Ive seen the body bags myself. So I’d suggest you stop whitewashing this tragedy. This is a disaster porn post and is part of a huge problem during this event. People posting exaggerated things that cause the overall impact to become murky and hard to understand the scope of.

Same man, same. I'm just outside of Boone and New River Light & Power had service restored here after two and a half days. Spectrum was back on around the same time as well (I was shocked at that one, franklypop5app wrote: ↑Tue Oct 08, 2024 9:43 amI live in Vilas along Old 421. Cove creek ravaged the valley. I have the National Guard staging down the road and have seen fuel trucks, dump trucks, covered transports, and humvees going by daily. Just saw a Black Hawk and Chinook fly overhead this afternoon.
My sister's house was hit by a tree and she applied to FEMA and heard back within a day. They offered to put her in a hotel room for as long as needed, but she has another place to stay. They've also been helpful.
Samaritan's Purse had been by and I think will be helping to cut down some trees.
It's been a hands on from volunteers, local and state orgs, to yes, the federal government. Everyone I've seen and have interacted with has been on point.
I'm not a religious person, but if there's a hell I hope an extra toasty spot is reserved for the charlatans, grifters, and shitbag misinformation spreaders. Edit: Spelling

He was pretty clear in his statement that FEMA did not have enough money to make it through the Hurricane season. Everyone gets hung up on the $750 narrative and sees that through the lens that they want to depending on political persuasion, but his sharing that funds are not in abundance to help get through the season is an even bigger concern. Wonder where that money went?BambooRdApp wrote: ↑Mon Oct 07, 2024 1:38 pmI think the overall point is Mayorkas comments on the hurricane fund should not have been articulated the way it was by him. We should remember that there have been hundreds of “ disasters “ this year. Forest fires, tornadoes, floods throughout the country. I also heard that FEMA has assets in Florida remaining from the past hurricane a couple years ago. Also, the bill just passed by Congress, to keep the government running, did not include any increase in funding for FEMA. Q
