Re: Pete Thamel- App State Fires Shawn Clark
Now that the deed is done and all the anti-Shawn Clark folks are tickled pink I have a few comments. First, I hope that we somehow find the $$$ to pay the next HC a 7 figure salary like some of our SB brethren are doing. Second, all YC members need to make sure that they back-track on the threats to withhold contributions and/or season ticket. Third to all the anti-Shawn Clark people who are not YC members and were equally if not more vocal than the YC club donors I say pony up or shut up. Join the YC club and let your pocket book back up your desire to fire him.
To Shawn Clark I say: the overall results were not what we or you wanted but we couldn't ask for a better Mountaineer ambassador. Thank you Coach.

We don't slide at Appalachian State. It's a sign of weakness.

And yeah, you tell ‘em! How dare people have an opinion! You can only have an opinion if you pay for one! Is your family just getting by while the totals at the grocery store keep going up? Sucks to suck! You get to stress out at home AND have no opinion on how a SPORTS TEAM that you love and care for progresses. Sit there and be sad and broke! That’s the Mountaineer attitude!
This take is so old and tired.

People don't have to give to YC to have opinion. That's about as dumb as saying people aren't fans if they don't xyz.....scatman77 wrote: ↑Mon Dec 02, 2024 4:56 pmNow that the deed is done and all the anti-Shawn Clark folks are tickled pink I have a few comments. I believe everyone here wanted Clark to succeed, but this year was the turning point season, and things went south. He’s a great guy and Mountaineer and I wish him the best. The best for us is an exciting new chapter. I believe Doug can get it done. Let’s be realistic and optimistic and keep supporting the program. Our attendance and brand are still strong, and it’s still great to be a Mountaineer.

So, let's hope a good choice is made to move the program forward again. The NIL donors will be a big part of getting transfers in that can swing things quickly. I don't think we need to temper expectations just because we have a new coach next year. Not like anyone has to build a program back over time like in years past. It can be done overnight nowadays. Indiana is a good example of that. I do understand the $ amounts will probably be a lot different P4 vs G5 level. Going to be an interesting journey into next fall.

The fact ESPN put our coaching firing on front page ESPN.com says a lot. They still love us.MAD Doctor wrote: ↑Mon Dec 02, 2024 5:24 pmI believe everyone here wanted Clark to succeed, but this year was the turning point season, and things went south. Re: Pete Thamel- App State Fires Shawn Clark
Yep it’s sad. No not dead. He is a Mountaineer, played here an alumni a Mountaineer. He is one of us. Something absolutely needed fixing but I find no joy in this. I’m hopeful the next guy will knock it outside from the get go. SC will survive, he has good connections but yeah it sucks a fellow Mountaineer had to be cut loose.ASUTodd wrote: ↑Mon Dec 02, 2024 2:29 pmSad? He isn't dead folks.... he can still go coach somewhere. He had 5 years here to do his job. He makes about 15 times more a year than I make and I get shot at. He's made millions, got a half a mill buyout, got to coach here, and can retire if he wanted to. College football is a business these days. Its just business.... Now, someone make the call to Mike Jacobs and lets get moving.

Re: Pete Thamel- App State Fires Shawn Clark
The SC HC record at App:
- 5 full seasons as HC
- Overall record 40-24 (25-15 SBC)
- 2 SBC championship game appearances
- 3 bowl bids in 5 years (3-1 bowl record)*includes 2019 NOLA bowl win
- 4-0 vs in state peer programs (3 vs ECU, 1 vs Charlotte)
- 2 top 25 wins (1 top 10)
- 1-4 vs P5 schools (3 very memorable losses (@Miami, 2 UNC) and 1 loss would like to forget (Clemson)
- 7-2 vs G5 schools (include bowl games)
- Zero FCS losses
This was Shawn Clark's first tenure as a head coach. 1st year dealt with a 100 year global pandemic and last year a 100 year unimaginable storm that disrupted the entire region.
5 years there were a lot of great memories coupled with several setbacks, but that is sports...Coach should feel good about his accomplishments....see everyone next season!

You are right, there are a lot of schools that would be thrilled with that but we are not a lot of schools when it comes to football. We are App State and we expect more.Captain Morgan wrote: ↑Mon Dec 02, 2024 6:21 pmAPP93 wrote: ↑Mon Dec 02, 2024 6:10 pmThe SC HC record at App:

He is an App State alum, and former All-American. There is a duality here where you preach performance, preach the standard, helped set the standard, yet couldn’t maintain it.
I feel bad for his family.
That said, Tre Lamb won’t have far to drive to get to Boone.

You also have to go back and look at Satterfield’s record and then Drinkwitz to compare. You’ll see the slippage.t4pizza wrote: ↑Mon Dec 02, 2024 6:29 pmYou are right, there are a lot of schools that would be thrilled with that but we are not a lot of schools when it comes to football. Re: Pete Thamel- App State Fires Shawn Clark
Clark was a coach of surprising upside victories but more surprising downside losses. He had ample time to have his name stamped firmly on the results, which are subpar for the last 40 years. If he'd made the "right" and obvious decisions in about 15 crucial points in ballgames during the last 5 years, he'd still be coaching APP. I'm not going to revel in his dismissing, but it was needed. I don't feel sorry for him because he's like made more money for himself than likely any of us on here in his short career and has secured his future, he will continue to make good money as an O Line coach somewhere. Next coach up, is going to have a tough job for a year or so, glad there is a portal to pull from, because we'll likely see some unwanted turnover.

I don’t have to be “anti-Shaw Clark” to have wanted a change. I’m actually very much pro Shawn Clark. I have wanted nothing but the best for him and I continue to want nothing but the best for him and his family.scatman77 wrote: ↑Mon Dec 02, 2024 4:56 pmNow that the deed is done and all the anti-Shawn Clark folks are tickled pink I have a few comments. Re: Pete Thamel- App State Fires Shawn Clark
The standard has been set. It’s not a pipe dream like some other programs have. It does take the right staff to meet the standard. The current one didn’t cut it.t4pizza wrote: ↑Mon Dec 02, 2024 6:29 pmYou are right, there are a lot of schools that would be thrilled with that but we are not a lot of schools when it comes to football.
