Well, he had many ex JMU players that went 11-1.
If you can get the best G5 players and supplement with some good HS recruits that can play at Big 10 level, you can be successful.
He is probably not ever going to get the HS recruiting classes as OSU, Michigan and Penn State

Id argue that he wasn't ready...He was in the sideline/timeout huddles to get the calls and game plan...Players that won't see the field don't do that. Plus with guys like Stroman, Robinson, Jackson & Hertzel in the rotation a young Sophomore like Short isn't likely to see the field unless he is an amazing talent.

It's happening everywhere at every level. Starters on national championship teams are even leaving as true freshman. Imagine that...you start on a national championship team, get 2 sacks in the natty and still go portal. Kids are getting greedy. You have 1 good year, dip your toe in the portal and see who pays the most.
Texas, Southern Cal, A&M, Michigan, Oregon seem to be paying the most right now. Maybe OSU too.

Really can't blame the "student" athletes, they are 18-23 and taking advantage of a situation that adults have agreed to.
