Re: Dowell's assistants
I'm expecting and excited to see some random former NFL guys that we can research and determine if they're going to be good or not. I'm not expecting a bunch of former Mountaineers or people we're really familiar with.

Re: Dowell's assistants
Who was the expected one? I personally expected more than one even if Clark stayed.

Re: Dowell's assistants
I am very cautious on the NFL assistant hires, especially at App State/Boone type of level of FBS -- P4 maybe they work.
Robert Nunn struggled being in Boone, struggled being a mentor. He was a super nice guy, but he wanted back in the NFL as fast as he could get there. Ken Dorsey left after a month.
Those are 2 examples, not all should be in that category but it's worth being skeptical about.

Re: Dowell's assistants
I can see that thought process. All of them are different and it depends on their goals. I think it also shows that if you get someone with a crazy impressive resume they won't stay here long. They are here for a purpose and once it is fulfilled they will leave. I do think we need a mix of coaches with college experience, NFL experience, and a mix of both. I actually think a staff of mostly people who have been at both levels is big. It helps in recruiting as well. I don't worry about losing a star player to the portal if we get a guy like Dorsey who just bolts in a year or less because many of the studs are going to do that anyway now. If there was no portal/NIL or even a limit on how many times a player can enter portal then perhaps I would but players can come in January and leave in June or show up in August and leave in December now.DenverOfTheEast wrote: ↑Wed Dec 11, 2024 11:25 amI am very cautious on the NFL assistant hires, especially at App State/Boone type of level of FBS -- P4 maybe they work.

Re: Dowell's assistants
Most NFL assistants don't buy the groceries, aka recruit the players, they have NFL GM, Scouts that do that for them.
I would say evaluating/recruiting good players will be a weakness for too many NFL guys on the staff.

Adam Gase? Dear god.
I'd rather have Ken Dorsey, and that's not even by a lot. To be honest, everywhere dude has coached was a failure, except for USC, for half of a season. App put up more points on ODU than USC did.

At this stage, everything is critical. His resume isn't that impressive as is, other than hanging around the Nepotism Football League.appstate24 wrote: ↑Wed Dec 11, 2024 4:11 amDC pick is critical. Excited to watch this staff come together.

Re: Dowell's assistants
There is a lot of nepotism in college as well. I have heard 3 people tell me that App has been considered the ole buddies network lately with the only hires made due to being buddies with certain people and we were not truly trying to get the best we could for positions. Give DL a chance and lets see how it goes. If this goes poorly though the head coach and staff won't be only ones out the door as I think Gillin will be on hot seat as well.ericsaid wrote: ↑Wed Dec 11, 2024 1:17 pmAt this stage, everything is critical. Re: Dowell's assistants
I have heard he already has a few that have agreed to come on board and there is just a process for announcing them. I don't know any names though. It will be interesting to see if he waits to get most of staff filled out before we announce or if they start announcing names one at a time or what.

Dude, I don’t have the ill will towards you that some do, but chill. We know you wanted Lamb. I do think Tre is a great coach, I think he will do great at Tulsa. Give it a rest for a few years, and if Tre kills it and DL falls on his face come back and say “I told you so.” Until then we ALL know how you feel.ericsaid wrote: ↑Wed Dec 11, 2024 1:17 pmAt this stage, everything is critical. Re: Dowell's assistants
Tre got some massive praise from elite coaches. Kirby Smart, Mark Richt, and others (and Napier). It is a little wild that we didn’t even reach out or call, or text him but we press on.appstate24 wrote: ↑Wed Dec 11, 2024 2:44 pmDude, I don’t have the ill will towards you that some do, but chill. Re: Dowell's assistants
If he has them already, they need to be announced so they can get working on portal recruiting. I know the old staff is working at that but let’s be honest, they don’t even know if they will have a job at app state, doubt any player is listening to them all that much. We need DLs coaches making the calls to get those portal kids.AppStFan1 wrote: ↑Wed Dec 11, 2024 2:33 pmI have heard he already has a few that have agreed to come on board and there is just a process for announcing them.
