Would have been someone I'd have liked us to contact if he'd stepped down a couple weeks ago. Perhaps he just wants a break from coaching, though.

Commenting before someone else says, “probly cuzza NIL and the dang transfer portal!!!”

It’s probably because he was 67-69 over 11 seasons

"The decision to step down was Clawson's, sources told ESPN, as he felt it was time. Sources compared the decision to recent moves made by Virginia basketball coach Tony Bennett and former Washington football coach Chris Petersen, who both stepped away in part because of the changing era in the sport.
...
There have been plenty of breadcrumbs to Clawson's frustration, and he has hinted at Wake Forest's NIL limitations as the Demon Deacons have gone 4-8 in each the past two seasons. After a loss to Louisiana of the Sun Belt earlier this season, Clawson explained his frustration: 'To fix problems, you need a lot of money. And we recruited what we could afford.'

Wake Forest members believed that in some games this season, individual players on the opposing team had bigger NIL deals than Wake Forest's entire roster. NIL numbers aren't public, which make such claims difficult to verify, but Wake's NIL was believed to be near the bottom of the 17-team ACC."

That’s his scapegoat. Pretty crazy how NIL doesn’t seem to stop teams like Coastal Carolina, Jacksonville State, and Marshall from winning games, yet their enrollment isn’t much higher and their average student probably comes from a lower socio-economic background.

He actually said that was the reason he was getting out and you still don’t believe it. It’s ok for coaches to not want to deal with the new reality of college football. And you’re actually kind of contradicting yourself. You said it was just an age thing, now you’re saying he is using NIL as a scapegoat. If he just wanted to retire he could have simply said, I just want to retire.

Yea, Clawson is revered for the job he's done at WF. They know what limitations he's working with.

WFU plays in a whole different league than the teams you mentioned, like it or not. They are at an EXTREME disadvantage yo the rest of the ACC and the SEC teams they will be playing more regularly. And like another poster said, it’s ok for older coaches to get out of the game as it is now. Same was true for Saban and Tony Bennett.

Clawson did better than most. WF never wins. Haven’t had a winning coach since Peahead Walker in the 1940s. Look it up. Too many factors are against them. Al Groh couldn’t do it. Jim Caldwell couldn’t do it and neither could Jim Grobe. And these are coaches that are highly respected by those in that business. And nobody is going to do much there with the current conditions of college football. Who is knocking the door down to transfer to WF? Not many. What funds do they have to pay players? Not much.

"Clawson is regarded as the school's best modern coach. He leaves with a record of 67-69, the best winning percentage of any Wake Forest football coach since the school joined the ACC in 1953. He led Wake Forest to seven of the 17 bowl games in school history and five of the school's 11 total bowl wins."

Certain jobs where they have limitations, and Wake is one of them.

If they hire Jeff Monken from Army -- that would interesting.

They should go hire the best 1-AA coach in on the east coast, or the JMU coach Bob Chesney.

Just heard this morning that he is staying on as an adviser to the AD. So more of a retirement I guess.

Tre Lamb would be a slam dunk. No better option out there.

Wake will be a school that will struggle in football in this portal/NIL era but with Mitt Shah their hoops program should be better than what they have done so far under Forbes.

NIT every year shouldn't cut it

He beat a very good App State team in Boone. I was at that game and I believe we had the better team, however, Clawson was the better coach and that was the difference. Other than the score, I think we ruled the game metrics, so clearly out coached that day.

I really worry about the future of college football and I'm fearful for our team in this wild wild west environment.

Wake Forest has a Sun Belt NIL budget playing in the ACC.

I really do believe that Wakey Leaks played a role in his problems as a head coach.

I also wonder if something like Wakey Leaks was going on at Appalachian, when the other teams seemed to always know what App was going to do, especially this season.

Not a conspiracy theorist, but I always wonder when a plane crashes, who is on that plane?
