So, NLI's should only be honored for good basketball teams? That makes a lot of sense.

Did he say that he didn't want to play for a bad basketball team or just our bad basketball team?
That's what I do. I gripe and I know things.

I've watched this for months now. Devonte was grateful for the offer and signed the NoLI . No one else was interested. Seems he and the"adults" who advise him forgot this. He could have done like Seth Curry and played a year and then transferred and sat a year. Nope the family and unnamed interested parties decided to air this in the court of public opinion and bully App. No one screwed up Devonte's life but the people he trusts. I would urge Devonte to take stock of those around him. While I doubt App took up this cause for the Mid Majors I am sure all are applauding us for our hard stance. The choices were all Devonte's. Play and Honor a commitment or break your commitment and pay the consequences. I hope Devonte learns from his mistake and I applaud Appalachian for being steadfast in its principles no matter how unpopular.

You are one of three people:

- a family member
- a wolfpack fan
- DG's AAU coach

If you are DG's AAU coach thanks providing us this valuable advice, unlike Devonte we aren't buying it. If you are you've already screwed up (your words) one year of Devonte's life. This is on you not App State.

If there had not been tampering App State releases him, unfortunately that doesn't appear to be the case.

Three weeks since the last post here and it seems all is well!

Seems like the sports world has forgot all about it.

We may never get a recruit from Devonte's school, but if we do I bet they take their NLI serious.

Or Devonte could turn into another Donte and it serve as a warning about trying things that this.

Spoke to someone from Broughton High school yesterday who was at the table when Devonte signed the NLI. Both his opinion and the bb coach is you signed it you honor it. Remember his BB coach cut John Wall for having bad attitude, so he is man of integrity rather then win at all cost.

This mess is from his AAU coaches. Garner Road YMCA does a great service to the kids over there, but they did him no favor in this situation giving him bad advice.

Gottfried did not have anything to do with this as he has 2 McDonald AA point guards that are a soph and freshman. Why would he need Devonte? He was all-state not All American. He just happened to be the pg and his son was shooting guard for Broughton simple as that.

Wrong. I've been told better from some State donors that give on a level that gets one some inside info. They're pissed about what Gottfried did in this circumstance. They also believe he is a short timer at State because of a number of bad decisions they know of him that have nothing to do with this issue, but this issue doesn't help him.

Wrong on all the above.
- A Broughton High and ASU graduate. So maybe being a Broughton alumni makes me a FAMILY MEMBER
- A born UNC fan (that never liked Capel)
His selfish and stubborn Ego screwed up the Heels team. And screwing up again.

Whatever I said that has pissed you all off, Get over it and recognize where the problem is with the team.
Perhaps, the kid actually realized this coach and team was a bust.

Oh yeah, If anything else to say look for me at the game tonight. I will have the "FREE DTAE" shirt

BS, nothing changed from the date he signed from a program perspective. A contract is a contract. Do your due diligence before signing the dotted line, a lesson everyone learns at some point in their life.

I live in Raleigh and have been telling my state friends this ever since the 1st game I saw Jim Harrick sitting behind Gottfried on the bench. Trouble always seems to follow him whereever he goes.

You should be ashamed of yourself, first for the UNC fan part, but mostly for supporting the idea that one's word means nothing, that a man's signature on a contract should be worthless. That's where the problem lies.

DISGUSTING.

The real "problem" with this team are fans like you.

It's moot...Devonte is not playing for any college this year and it's HIS fault...... Remember to tell your 'Family" how honor and integrity work and make sure they know it's okay not to do either. You are a tool..

I'm in the corner of not freeing Donte up, but I wonder how we would feel if the situation were reversed.

One thing about Donte though . . . he came back and was the difference maker that gave us one of our greatest seasons ever. There is no way he would have come here if we had refused to let him out of his LOI and made him burn a year of eligibility while he was prepping. While there is no doubt that we can fully enforce the LOI, we are operating outside of custom. When you bypass custom you piss people off, even if you are within your rights to do so. The national media has certainly forgotten about this, but the Garner Road program hasn't. And the elite HS basketball community in Raleigh is very small. Its nothing like football. I think our reputation has been harmed there. That said, we can do fine without players from that area the next couple years.

New Mexico is holding a kid to an LOI he signed before Alford took the UCLA job. It is not nearly as uncommon as the media has made it out to be to hold someone to their word.
