Good question. May need to look at it from ..did they show improvement over the years in position group. He came in with a new coach, Mizzou definitely not a powerhouse of the SEC, and probably not getting the recruits Gawgia, Bama

Re: DJ Smith DC
Looking at the announcement pic I say we try to get DJ a couple more years of eligibility. Dude looks like he could still get it done.

Re: DJ Smith DC
Hopefully, he brings back some dominant linebacking corps that we’ve lacked the past few years.

Much needed physicality and the ability to connect with recruits from an NFL background.

Re: DJ Smith DC
A Co-DC and RC at a P4 to DC of a G5 is a much more typical path than OL at a G5 to HC at a G5.

I’ve been about as negative as anybody on this board lately, but for the love of God can we please not find anything negative about this hire, please, please, please.

Re: DJ Smith DC
Say what you want about Drinkwitz, but he's a smart coach and he; hired DJ, retained him for all 5 years, and promoted him. That speaks volumes about DJ's ability in my opinion.

Re: DJ Smith DC
Could also likely say, with Drink’s relationship with DLo, he recognizes DJ needs that next step as a solo DC and probably lobbied for this hire

Re: DJ Smith DC
He is considered one of the highest IQ players in the last 30 years at App State. Drink was a cerebral coach and I imagine surrounded himself with intelligent coaches.
I love this hire and if this staff is successful would love to have him be our HC in the near future.

Who was a "life long" G5 OL coach? You aren't speaking about Clark, otherwise, you're misinformed or want to purposely discount his Big10 experience at Purdue.ASUFan4863 wrote: ↑Mon Dec 30, 2024 9:07 amClearly you see the difference between a life long G5 OL coach and a rising SEC CO-DC?
Love that DLo is bringing DJ back!

Re: DJ Smith DC
Resume, and the fact that he wasn't already on staff. But mainly, the job isn't head coach.

Re: DJ Smith DC
Fair. There have been comments that some feel like, or want this to be a coach in waiting situation, which to me would be a similar situation if it materializes.

Clearly you see the difference between a guy who had spent 75% of his 17-year career as a G5 OL coach vs a guy who has spent 75% of his 7-year career as an SEC LBs coach/Co-DC/recruiting coordinator. Better?

Re: DJ Smith DC
I repeat I like the hire but:
Clark: Mountaineer and multiple venues of experience
DJ: Mountaineer and multiple and varied venues of experienced
We don't slide at Appalachian State. It's a sign of weakness.
