SoCon basketball championship

Unread post by apphiker » Mon Mar 10, 2025 6:48 pm

I’m sort of watching Wofford against Furman in the Southern Conference basketball championship game. The Furman uniforms have “dins” on the front of them. Who thought that was a good idea?

If a tree falls in the woods and nobody is there to hear it then did it really happen?

The Socon championship this year is what March Madness is all about. 5 vs 6 seeds in the title game in a packed arena with the 6 seed going to the dance.

A much better atmosphere than the Sun Belt championship. And, to boot their semis were nationally televised as well. I will say last night's SBC title game was one of the better atmospheres there have been in Pensacola.

The Civic Center is the perfect size venue and the perfect location geographically for the SoCon. That's something the SBC and other spread out league will struggle to match. I wouldn't having a similar conference footprint for our sports outside of football, or for all sports if the mythical G5 Eastern Conference ever came to be.

Troy and Arkansas State was about as good of a matchup as the league could have hoped for. It was good to see a decent crowd in Pensacola for once.

The SoCon Tournament is the only thing I miss about the old days. They got that right.

Baseball too. Greenville or Charleston. Can't beat that in May.

I’m sure I rang up over twenty consecutive SoCon tournaments and many more here and there. Asheville was the best. Packed crowds and a lot of atmosphere. We made some runs there but never made it across the line. Roanoke and our first championship is still my favorite. Winning in Greenville was a good time beating CofC who was beyond arrogant.

I remember the SoCon tournament during the ETSU run with Les Robinson, during Apke’s tenure at App. Lot of fun.

I also remember losing to them in Varsity, I believe it was 96-94, one of the best atmospheres ever during my time at App.

I still remember our starting lineup, Kemp Philips, Rodney Peel, Ben Miller, Steven Spurlock, Sam Gibson

Loved that team. Varsity had it rocking for that game.

If you're not familiar with Kemp Phillips after leaving Appalachian, a Google search is very interesting.
