Obviously won’t happen, but how cool and fitting would it be to have Ole Smoky Moonshine or one of the other “moonshine” companies in Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg.

Thanks for putting that form of distilled spirits in quotation marks. True moonshine has no barcode.appstate24 wrote: ↑Wed Mar 05, 2025 8:47 amObviously won’t happen, but how cool and fitting would it be to have Ole Smoky Moonshine or one of the other “moonshine” companies in Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg.

We all know Nike is driving this as their owner/founder went to Oregon. At what point does someone actually get to be the ruling body over college sports?

I can see some areas for challenge if the legislation passes and if someone with standing had the desire. In any event chaos is the order of the short of federal legislation.

I remember we talked about the article where Phil said the check book was wide open for the university.
There are some other schools that will probably see a rise again like Maryland with underarmor and the Waltons paying to get Calipari at Arkansas.
Eventually there will be a players association created to negotiate limits since it's now a pro sport with evolving labor contracts.

Re: Another domino has fallen NIL
I do not think there should be limits on NIL, because when you set limits there are always work arounds. Let them spend all the money they have. The pressure on the athletes that have these huge NIL deals will eventually show up when they do not live up to expectations.ASUTodd wrote: ↑Sun Mar 30, 2025 11:24 amhttps://www.google.com/amp/s/www.oregon ... utType=amp

The money has always been there, now we are just seeing what kind of money is involved.
Let them spend the money only to watch them leave to play at another school next year. Then the next year they willl not have as much money to spend and eventually it will all work itself out.
The only reason SMU got the death penalty was because Texas could not compete financially with SMU.
Appalachian just needs to be able to play these schools in the future, because Michigan would not have lost to App had they not played App.

This entire deal is a lot like people saying, "I do not like brown nosers.", when what they are really saying is "I do not like people that are better brown nosers than I am."

We won’t be able to compete without some kind of framework kind to us. Anyway , yes Maryland has and is benefitting in a large way.

Re: Another domino has fallen NIL
you and Jcline try to one up each other in stupid sayings..... All this money was NOT present before. There was money present but not in this abundance (that's just an excuse people are using to justify it). Take Reggie Bush. Yeah he got some cash to play at USC but imagine the money he would have gotten under this system. It's apples and oranges. If you want to have a level playing field then there has to be a limit. If you could careless and want different tiers, guess what....still has to be some limit to set the tiers. To your point about letting them spend the money. These athletes are athletes for a reason. Pressure is what they thrive on (or should be). They'll go wherever they can make bank regardless of the outcome. Money talks. I've held onto to a crappy job because of good money.

Re: Another domino has fallen NIL
Instituting an NIL cap in college athletics is an interesting idea, but would it beneficial to the sports?
Not apples to apples, but can we say the salary cap has improved the overall product in the NFL?
At any rate, who would put it into place and be the governing body?
NCAA? Or would the P4's continue in the direction of handling their own governance?
Not rhetorical questions, just thinking out loud.

Well, the record books won’t change under the present climate. Nobody stays around long enough to break one.

A step in the right direction would be a limit on the number of transfers and a requirement that the student athlete be on schedule to receive a degree after a set number of years...probably 5. I remember the fake courses and tutors but at least make it resemble an education so we can complain about fake courses and tutors.

I believe that they still have to be on track for graduation to remain eligible.mike87 wrote: ↑Mon Mar 31, 2025 10:00 amA step in the right direction would be a limit on the number of transfers and a requirement that the student athlete be on schedule to receive a degree after a set number of years...probably 5. Re: Another domino has fallen NIL
The only level that really gets hurt is the good G5’s. We are basically Triple A. I’m sure there isn’t a mass exodus from D2,D3 and FCS/lower level G5 to the power schools. The group that includes the Belt, some MAC, Mtn West and the AAC are the ones who get raided the most I would bet. Most of these schools probably aren’t doling out wads of cash to either keep or entice stud players to transfer in. As far as remaining eligible I simply can’t believe a guy can be at his 3rd or even 4th school and is on track to graduate. I’m sure there are many exceptions but the skeptic in me says differently.

Re: Another domino has fallen NIL
A coach recruits a player out of high school. Treats him like his own son. Develops him for 2-3 years at times to get his game at a high level and just when his game is at the point where he is going to be a force to deal with, he leaves. And now it’s happening at the high school level quite often. Sad state of affairs.

Remember that old thing mom and dad used to say? "Be careful what you wish for". I read so many times about how NIL was great and the Portal was only fair. Well here we are.
