Joey throws a better ball than Nico.
Neither one had a real good year in 2024. Joey led FBS in interceptions last year and Nico was just average with some real good and real bad throws. Joey threw the ball more but he was less accurate and made a lot more mistakes.

Nico- 2,616 yards, 19 TD, 5 INT, 64%, 201 per game
Joey- 3,003 yards, 23 TD, 18 INT, 56%, 273 per game

I'd take Nico's stat line all day as a Freshman playing in the SEC against the likes of Bama's/UGA/Ole Miss' of the world. And has 4 years left of eligibility.

If he grows up and keeps his dad in check he has the talent to play in the NFL. We will see if it happens.

Joey was throwing a lot of picks out there. His play is why they have been shopping for a QB. It’s not like he looked good and they are screwing him over.

I would look at SEC stats and Ohio State game. I believe barely 200 yards a game passing.
I have no real opinion as to whether Joey or Nico are the better QB....it seems to me that Nico was not worth what Tennessee was paying him. In my view, they have been able to dump a loss contract and look pretty good in doing so...from an optics perspective...prima Donna QB sits out practice and demands more money.... whether daddy behind it or not, Tennessee is looking better in an overall bad situation that got put into the public.

In Joey's case, probably not uncommon for a QB to not look all world when attempting to learn a new system. Joey struggled at App in preseason his first year ... Burger gets hurt and Joey Dimes was born in Boone. In regards to last year, both sides have to own Joey's performance...some on him and some on coaching staff.... Whether he is a Power level QB...guess time will tell...

What is your source for what he is doing out at UCLA? I’m not disputing that he may not be gelling yet, but the only place that I have seen that statement is on message boards.

Joey by all accounts isn’t a great looking player in practice. They may have been spooked.

There were some fans on message boards and reputable media speculating they would go after Nico the moment he left Tennessee. They said UCLA coaches were frustrated with Joey due to interceptions and the fact they have gone after Nico tells me those people were right. If they weren't right then why else go after Nico when you are already paying 1M to a QB? The reason they brought hm in was because they thought they could coach the picks out of him, he is from west coast, and has size and athleticism they like. He was throwing picks left and right out there. Joey is really a G5 caliber QB. No shot at the NFL. He would be smart to stay there, collect that check, and then use the money to start a business. He might could go to the CFL or UFL but he would have to play 8 years in Canada and 15 in the UFL to even get close to what UCLA is paying him.

Nico threw 10 TDs and no picks against their OOC. So he was 9/5 against SEC opponents.

Joey needs to plan for the future. And since that future is unlikely to involve playing on Sundays, he should get busy building his Amway empire before graduation rolls around.

Tell him we’re full up on staff, but he’s welcome to fill out an application and we’ll call him closer to football season when things open up.

IMO, any P5, i.e. UCLA, better have more than one option for QB going into the season, no matter what you "think" you have in spring. We all know that all major college teams want multiple options in the QB room, especially when you don't have a known performer. And even when you do have a starter, you want a COUPLE of strong backups. That is the nature of the game today.

That all being said, I don't know how Joey is doing. It could be that Joey scares them OR UCLA saw an opportunity to "sign" what appeared to be a starter from SEC and they have the money and resources to do it, regardless of what they already have in hand. In the second scenario they have two options. Nico has some baggage as well but they may have done it just because they can.

Is it a forgone conclusion that Joey won’t win the job?

If Nico gets hurt vs Gardner Webb he has a chance.

One finger injury and one touchdown pass and Joey California can be lead the Bruins to the B1G Title game to be demolished by Ohio State.

Yes it is. If reports are true, you have to imagine that Joey has looked pretty awful in camp. Just watch the entire season of Tennessee and App State last year and Nico is the better player by far. Why would a school offer 1.7M to a player, whose dad is known trouble, that they apparently can't afford unless the QB they just brought in paying 1.2M to is willing to let them out of the deal? If I am Joey I would stand my ground and force UCLA to pay the money. UCLA is in a tough spot if they can't afford both and Joey should not walk away to give them a free pass. He should hold them to it. I don't see any other school near his home willing to give him the same money and this is UCLA's problem, not his.

Indeed. Whether Joey is better or not is irrelevant. The only thing that matters for Joey is to hold the line with UCLA an make them pay him 1.2M. No need to feel bad for him because he is an adult who made this decision knowing this could happen but he is crazy if he does not make sure he gets 1.2M from UCLA.
