Re: UCLA football
I hope Joey kicks butt at UT. It will be good for him and good for App. If so, it would be a reflection on our less than good coaching and offense. It would not surprise me if he excels.
On the reference to Joey's game at Clemson. One cannot completely give him a free pass BUT here are some key facts:
1. Clemson was pissed and loaded for bear. They played at close, if not, their peak performance level due to the severe embarrassment handed to them by UGA. Nobody wanted to face the Tigers that week and at Death Valley.
2. Our defense puts you in a hole 28 pts IMMEDIATELY, the entire game plan for our offense went out the window
3. Our entire offensive line looked terrible
4. Joey got no help from receivers and RBs.
5. The Defense never showed up for entire game until Dabo called off the dogs.
You basically expect Joey to single-handedly be the offense against a pissed off/embarrassed Clemson defense that wanted a blood bath?
Nope, not a fair or meaningful snapshot of his performance at App.

Re: UCLA football
If coaches cannot help players then Rich Gannon would not have had a better career lately in his career or Sam Darnold having a pretty good season last year
Evidently the Tenn coaches believe they can put the QB in position to win games or they would not have taken him

Re: UCLA football
My literal point is that if he plays in the ACC he would want to/need to have a better outing than that performance. I did not say it was all on him. My point was that he would need better nights for whatever reason you want.AtlAppMan wrote: ↑Tue Apr 22, 2025 12:45 pmI hope Joey kicks butt at UT. One thing in his defense is that I believe Ponce was a bad QB coach and not all on Joey. I just know as much as he likes to take chances in the Sun Belt and paid for it with picks that the ACC/SEC is a lot faster and going to be harder.

Re: UCLA football
They absolutely do feel that way. My point is that all coaches feel they can when they take on a player. No coach is going to take on a player they don't think they can fix. They don't always succeed but sometimes they do. Coaches can help players but not all players can be helped either. I do know that if they fix Joey then it will really look bad on Ponce because I was among those who was expecting a big improvement in 2024 instead of the regression we saw from Joey.BambooRdApp wrote: ↑Tue Apr 22, 2025 12:47 pmIf coaches cannot help players then Rich Gannon would not have had a better career lately in his career or Sam Darnold having a pretty good season last year

UT may not be finished in the Portal. I don’t know. I do know they will have a QB that they think can get them into the playoff. Whoever that may be.

Re: UCLA football
I’ll take Josh Huepal’s evaluation of Joey, or any QB that he thinks is good enough to help his team over a kbw. He’s already proven his ability in Joe Milton and Herndon Hooker.

Re: UCLA football
To be fair he will undoubtedly study under the best QB coaching staff he's ever had at UTk.BallantyneApp wrote: ↑Tue Apr 22, 2025 12:35 pmThey do not think that and so do the fans.
On Reddit some Tennessee fan said Joey was going to get actual development for the 1st time in his college career lol.

Re: UCLA football
The fact they want a QB is no shock because of their pure numbers but surprised they would pay a good bit for someone else because I had read that they had a young guy they believe in as well. Could they bring in one more or is Joey the 4th? I would think he would want to have 4 QBs, especially since one is a true freshman.

Re: UCLA football
My point was not a knock on him but just that a coach will obviously not take on a QB they don't think they can help. I agree and feel like he would do much better than Ponce. Keep in mind that he will have Joey for just one semester basically while he had Hooker for 2 years and Milton for 3 years. I believe he will help Joey but only so much can be done in that short time span.

Side note- you have to wonder what the heck some of these guys (JA included) are doing on the academic side. Leave App State, admitted to UCLA? Fall classes at UCLA? Admitted to UT? Do generally speaking most JUCO credits transfer? It baffles me how some of these dudes can move around this much and have any semblance of an academic transcript.

Re: UCLA football
UCLA made good in the TP this offseason, but still has some question marks. Joey will be surrounded by the best offensive personnel he’s ever played with in Knoxville. So, it’s ride or die time for Joey Dimes.
And re: Ponce…his gross ineptitude as an offensive coordinator was exceeded only by his abject failure as a QB coach. Screaming at players can only get you so far. With Joey, it didn’t work at all. Now, let’s change the subject so I can start forgetting (again) that Frank ever coached up here.

Re: UCLA football
I wondered a few years ago because it baffled me as well but I don't question it anymore. JA either is on track and fine or does not care and if he does not care then we should not care. It is his problem and not ours.Bigdaddyg1 wrote: ↑Tue Apr 22, 2025 1:35 pmSide note- you have to wonder what the heck some of these guys (JA included) are doing on the academic side. Re: UCLA football
I think Joey will succeed. I have seen both play in person, Joey performed better than Nico. At UT Joey will have better OL and receivers.
Huep was a qb and is a better about coach.

Re: UCLA football
I 100% agree that JH is a better coach than Ponce and I believe that he will help Joey improve. Players often have a transition period when they move up a level and Joey has little time so it will be interesting to see how it goes.
I don't think anyone has said Nico is a stud who is a franchise QB in NFL right now. It is the upside since he is younger, has more time, and has a bigger arm. He does have a long way to go. I see mock drafts that have him as a top 10 pick and I feel like he has a long way to go for that to happen.
