NC senate budget

Unread post by moonshine » Fri Apr 18, 2025 12:58 pm

Sports gambling revenues going to state universities college programs. Would be a nice revenue stream for App if this passes.

What’s the best use for these funds? Fully funding scholarships across the board? Building up NIL collective? Save for down payment on KBS east tower?

https://www.wral.com/story/senate-budge ... /21960105/

“North Carolina Senate Republicans plan to increase the amount of tax revenue that flows to athletic departments at UNC System schools, add UNC and NC State to that distribution and double the tax rate on sports betting operators as part of its budget proposal.
The budget would also mandate that UNC and NC State play men's and women's basketball games against other schools in the UNC System, a requirement that is connected to the revenue distribution.“

“The increase from an 18% tax rate to a 36% tax rate would put North Carolina among the top in the nation with New York (51%), New Hampshire (51%), Delaware (50%), Illinois (up to 40%) and Pennsylvania (36%).”

“Appalachian State, East Carolina and UNC Charlotte would receive $1.5 million.”

“The schools receiving $1.5 million up front would end up with $4.1 million and $5.1 million.”

I wonder if they will put any stipulations on how it can be used.

Just some food for thought with revenue sharing. If schools begin to pay out to athletes directly from revenue sharing as employees they will be under labor laws of discrimination. That would mean in order to comply, eligibility based on age/years active would be illegal. All they could do at that point would be to require that they are signed up for classes and be an "active student."

If it was like the lottery they shifted other money away from public schools, so hope that this would actually increase money instead of shift money to keep the funds about the same from a different source.

Not to shift the discussion but I’ve often wondered why we don’t just institute a national lottery. People scream and yell about paying taxes but just imagine the revenue if say, 50 million people per week spent $1 on a ticket. The winnings could be multiple. It’s like a shot at getting your tax money back.

Probably because alumni dominate the makeup of the political scene and I assume substantially more gambling involves their teams than App. EasyU, and 49ers

No it’s because they have more individuals in decision making positions.

#257

The “rivalries” clause is on pg 144 and gambling tax increase and distribution is on pg 436.

Still in committee. It's still in its infancy.

Even tho the N.C. House and Senate are controlled by the same party, they sometimes have very different objectives, and those discussions and negotiations can and have dragged on for months.

State budget is due by June 30, but it's rarely done by then.

And then there's the lack of a veto-proof majority, since the governor is from the other party, thus a veto would need 60% in both chambers.

There's a looooong way to go on this state budget.

There are two political parties in the General Assembly- the House and the Senate. It’s always been that way. I’ve been involved with them since the days when there were four Republicans in Raleigh. Total. Including State employees. We have a perhaps once in a century opportunity to take a huge step forward. We best cash in. Literally.

Hickory folks need to get in your representatives ears. Western NC...including Charlotte should do everything they can to get even money for App and UNCC. App,ECU,UNCC should be strong together on this one. Way more alumni from these three FBS schools living in NC than NCSUand UNC alumns living in NC. We did not organize if this goes the wrong way.
