I have a very good friend, an attorney, who works in licensing at Virginia Tech. While there are obstacles that must be navigated, anything that they want to put VT on can be done. He's done it.

The “jump man” brand seems kind of tied to the Tarholes to me. I do however like Jordan himself, but in general not a fan of Nike.

Do they make apparel items worn by the teams available for public purchase?

I think some of them are and some aren't. I'm okay with having team specific gear, but some of the coaches' gear should be available to fans. I was more talking about branding opportunities than clothing, though. They work agreements to stick VT on just about anything and to partner up with businesses that you wouldn't readily associate with collegiate marketing.

I get that. I’ve sent Sarah some things that other colleges have their brand on. I’m not sure, but it’s possible that some of these vendors may not want to invest in products for “small market” schools. In other words, can they sell enough to make the juice worth the squeeze.

We should work with Wake/Iowa/etc. and design apparel together, switching out the logos. We'd just buy 20% of the volume. Works for the NFL.

I spoke with some members of the Athletic Department today about merchandise. The merchandise for teams are purchased out of their respective team budgets and NC law prohibits those items from being sold. Now App has the ability to purchase like items from a different bucket that can be sold in Yosef’s Locker. However, some of the team issued items are not made available by Nike and any items sport specific have to be approved by the coaches of the respective sports.

Thanks for the update, good to gain a better understanding of how all of this works behind the scenes.
