78-79 Basketball Material (video) needed

Unread post by asutrnr81 » Mon Dec 16, 2013 3:55 pm

Hey guys,

A friend of mine Ken Davis is trying to help DJ and others find any video especially, or pictures from the NCAA Tournament team coached by Cremins during the 78-79 basketball season. According to DJ, little if any film/video exists from that time.

If any of you have any ideas about where and who to ask, I am sure it would be well received. They may not be able to pull any of this off as they want a quality product if they are going to do one....but who knows what is out there!

If you choose not to state here where to look you can message me on this site and I will contact you directly.

Too long ago for me to remember but did we have any TV games that year prior to the NCAA's? I went to all the tournament games in Roanoke while in school, 77 through 80, and I don't remember if any of those were TV games either. Great times, crowds, and some good basketball in Boone then, sigh.

What year did we play UNCC, with "Cornbread" at VG? Wasn't it on TV? Maybe contact with Gentry or other players can find something from them.

Did not think about the TV side.....Will work on that! As for Roanoke I do not think any of it was on TV. But again....

I had someone else suggest we contact the opponents to see if there was any video from their archives. On a mission! Keep the suggestions coming!

Geez Louize, you sure do know how to make a guy feel old. :( I have a two-volume set of *gulp" Sony BetaMax videos of the '78-'79 SoCon Tourney Finals (ASU v. Furman) held at the Roanoke Civic Center. They were recorded off-air probably from the ABC-TV telecast using a fringe area antenna--not today's high resolution cable or satellite feeds. They've been hermetically sealed in a #2 mayonnaise jar on Funk & Wagnel's back porch since the morning after the game.

I didn't keep the BetaMax recorder/player around, so I can't do a condition assessment for binder deterioration or mold damage to the tapes. I could be convinced to loan them to the university in exchange for "three dawgs all the way" from the Roanoke Weiner Stand. Oh man, they are to kill for!

In all seriousness (for a change), there are services that will transfer BetaMax programming to DVD for a reasonable charge--maybe $9 to $10 per tape plus incidentals.

I'm perfectly willing to make my tapes available for a qualified person to do an assessment and do a transfer if the quality is up to snuff. Due to the time and circumstances, we're probably not going to find a lot of footage to work with.

CB....what's Ken up to these days? I haven't seen him since before he left for GaTech with Bobby.
We don't slide at Appalachian State. It's a sign of weakness.
