I would think that would be a heck of an offer for a wideout. To quote Bill Paxton in Aliens, "Game over man, game over!"boonetown1 wrote:Looks like canty picked up an offer from Boise State

Re: Recruiting, 2014
Boise is good now, but I remember them as a middling program in the mid-90's. Thats what gives me hope as App moves moves up. Would you rather live in Boone or Boise? Have you been to Boise?

Re: Recruiting, 2014
Just wanted to say that things are getting ready to get CRAZY. The dead period ends on the 15th. From the 16th through Feb 5th offers and visits are going to be flying around. We'll do our best to keep up but truly anything can happen and we should be prepared for anything. I hope the staff can finish strong and can not only keep most of our commits but also bring in the players they are looking for. Get ready for a bumpy ride.
Re: Recruiting, 2014
Boise is starting to have problems, , lost their head coach to Washington, got beat in a minor bowl this year, and the returning team doesn't seem to be a top 25 team. I think the glory years are behind them. With everything that has happen to them the last 2 years, hard to imagine a East Coast kid would go there over us, but, since Canty has made it clear we pretty much are his "fall back" school, I guess you never know.

Re: Recruiting, 2014
I'm going to be moving WR Montez McGuire (6′ 1″ 212) of Georgia Military College in Milledgeville, GA back to the commits section of the Main Page from the Signed NLI section. It appears he needs two classes to get his GPA up to be eligible, thus his NLI is no longer in affect. He stated on his twitter he wasn't coming until March (Georgia Military College is on the quarter system) but he had said one class, not two. He did say that he is not looking anywhere else and plans on enrolling for summer. This one is a wait and see and makes signing at least 2 more (more likely 3) WR's even more important now to finish the year.

Re: Recruiting, 2014
Don't see Canty going to Boise. He's said he's not going to Idaho and he has the Wake offer to fall back on if he doesn't get his Vandy offer plus we've got 23 more days for him to pick up another offer. I've removed him from the visitors list for this weekend as he's now going to Wake. Only leaves two weekends and one he is scheduled to go to Vandy. Commit is looking liquid enough to be vapor right now but our reward for offering him early and getting the commit is to be kept on the hook until the very last minute and leave us no time to fill the spot unless another school jumps in and he commits to them right away. With the above post about McGuire WR is becoming a spot of concern right now. What a joy G5 FBS recruiting is.moehler wrote:Boise is starting to have problems, , lost their head coach to Washington, got beat in a minor bowl this year, and the returning team doesn't seem to be a top 25 team. Re: Recruiting, 2014
As much as I hate the situation Canty has put us in, its only fair to state that a common practice of coaches is to offer schlorships early to players, then at the end of the recruiting period pull the schlorship if a better recruit falls in their lap, leaving the original recruit scrambling to find another school. Recruiting is a cold blooded, cutthroat business, sadly, App is going to get screwed and, App will screw over recruits, just the nature of the beast.

Re: Recruiting, 2014
I have never said it wasn't. I was just telling those who don't follow it as closely to be prepared as this is what we are going to be facing every year as a G5 school. Didn't happen as much on the FCS level but still did. It's going to be happening more now with the move up. Just how it is.moehler wrote:As much as I hate the situation Canty has put us in, its only fair to state that a common practice of coaches is to offer schlorships early to players, then at the end of the recruiting period pull the schlorship if a better recruit falls in their lap, leaving the original recruit scrambling to find another school. Posted this on the Visitors thread either, but since this one is probably the better spot - yes we're going to be dealing with this every year, and yes we're especially vulnerable to it as a smaller program. But even the elites have guys flip on them at the last minute. It's a pain, but it's just something the coaches have to try and manage as best they can.
ETA: Frankly, it seems like Canty is giving every indication that he will not sign with App. Unless the staff has information to the contrary, they might well be smart to stop holding a spot for him and accept a commit from elsewhere if they can land one. Of course, we may not be there yet, what with multiple WRs needed in this class. (i.e., we could probably take another without using Canty's spot.)
Re: Recruiting, 2014
I agree about Canty giving us plenty of signals the past 3 months that he really doesn't want to be a mountaineer, so Im not too upset with him. It would have been nice for him to call the coaches and tell them the truth that he didn't want to come to Boone, but I guess he doesn't have the backbone to give up his schlorship until Wake or another school made him an offer.

Personally, I hope we can get Eaton, Scott and Meadors to commit. At that point, I would pull Canty's offer to show that the programs, not the athletes, have the ultimate power

While I would love to get Meadors, he hasn't showed us much interest. My guess is he follows his high school QB to ODU.mtnjax wrote:Personally, I hope we can get Eaton, Scott and Meadors to commit. Eaton, by all accounts, seems to be an under the radar star. Same goes with Harralson. Would love to get either or both of those guys!

Re: Recruiting, 2014
I haven't read anything from Moose that would indicate he has done anything under the table or hasn't been upfront - don't think pulling an offer in this situation, if my assumptions are correct, would result in anything positive ---mtnjax wrote:Personally, I hope we can get Eaton, Scott and Meadors to commit. I have to say that the programs don't have the ultimate power - once an offer is made, the power is in the hands of the young athletes who must decide which situation is best for them ---

Re: Recruiting, 2014
We shouldn't pull his offer just to spite him; that's a move with no upside and some downside. Rather, tell him that he can either accept the offer for real (i.e., no more visits elsewhere) or risk losing it if another player commits before he does.
It's not a foolproof move, because it still relies somewhat on him being honest (i.e., he could cancel other visits but still communicate with other coaches, or possibly even try to take other visits without it being public knowledge). But it could at least give the staff the option not to continue holding a reservation for a guy who may be likely to go elsewhere.

Re: Recruiting, 2014
I think that the coaches have got to let it play out. Canty is the top target for a reason and quite frankly, the coaching staff must be doing something right to keep us in the picture. Canty may be our top target, but he could also be a backup for the other schools offering him. Pulling an offer to our top target because we got a commitment from ou 4th target is the wrong way to do business.

Re: Recruiting, 2014
I don't necessarily disagree, 94. Depends on, among other factors, how big the perceived dropoff is from the top target to the 4th target, and from the 4th target to not filling the spot at all.
If you feel Canty projects as a real standout, then obviously you stay with him longer than if you think he's just a hair better than the next guy.
Or, you just do what the big guys do - sign more than you can take, see if it resolves itself through attrition (i.e., players not qualifying), and if you still need to get under the scholarship max, tell someone you need him to grayshirt. Of course, you'd preferably have that understanding in place before signing day...

I would love to get Eaton. All indications of him in interviews and social media show him as an extremely hard worker and ready to come in and play hard with a chip on his shoulder.
I did notice he mentioned coach stepp on twitter saying he was the coolest coach bar none recruiting him.

Re: Recruiting, 2014
The dead period is now over, the first visit weekend is coming up and it's time for the crazy to begin. We've been at this since March. Even though it seems it's taken 10 years to get to this point these last three weeks are going to be fast and furious. Cinch the belts up tight because the green flag just dropped. To steal a line from DW himself " boogity boogity boogity boys....lets' go recruiting!!!!"
Re: Recruiting, 2014
wish we had better weather this weekend, snow flurries, not the best weather to try and impress a recruit and his family, but hopefully everything works out.
