They are furiously trying to sweep this under the rug. What's sad is that the NCAA would be all up in their business if it were more about money and improper benefits (a la the Manziel autograph investigation) but theyre really sending the message that academics don't matter.

Auburn... 2004
Not 100% sure but I think Florida State did too.
Not sure about the 100's of fake classes though but there were fake classes.
Hope I didn't keep you waiting too long. Been gone.
UGA basketball early 2000's under Jim Harrick, fake P.E. Classes, can be added as well... However, the NCAA came down hard on them and they still haven't recovered.

The difference is UGA basketball is not a NCAA rainmaker. UNC b-ball, Auburn/FSU football are (i think you can even lump Ohio State football a few yrs ago into this group). Point being the NCAA will quickly turn a blind eye to anything that hurts their back pocket even if it undermines to the very core the reason for existence - the "STUDENT" athlete. They have turned a blind eye for so long, being more worried more about petty text messages from a coach to a recruit on the wrong date on the calendar, that at this point laying down penalties to the UNC's of the world would be admitting that they themselves, the NCAA, have been nothing but a money hungry utter failure.

I agree totally.
I don't mind the hammer put on UNC at all much to the surprise of some on here. If you do the crime you should do the time.
What I laugh at is those who keep going after the "Carolina Way" when we had "No Equal". They say the Carolina Way have been going on for years and No Equal was only for a few years. Really?
Being arrogant for years trumps being arrogant for a few years. That's their argument. Is that because when UNC was successful their slogan came out? What about when ASU won their 3 NC's? Isn't that when their slogan came out too? Both came after their programs became successful.
I understand what has happened at UNC is way worse than anything uncovered so far at any other university and is probably the only one that has done it to to this extent. Bring the hammer down on them.
NCAA is a joke. Did I say the NCAA is a joke?

I'm no expert here - just making a comment --- I do think you might be mixing two totally different items --- "No Equal" was a SLOGAN after winning 3 national championships in football - "The Carolina Way" has been the embodiment of ALL aspects of the institution for decades --- I thought the "No Equal" was cool for one year (seeing that Army was the only other D-1 school to go back to back to back in the 40s) but when we didn't win the 4th it should have been dropped - I know it was used in other areas but I don't think any of us took it on as the mantra of the entire university in all aspects. "The Carolina Way" has clearly been used to say we are better than you in everything you want to bring up -

You summed up exactly what I was about to post. No Equal was cool but when we did not back it up we should have dropped it. Same thing with Carolina Way, if you claim to be the standard by which all others are measured then you better walk the walk. UNC obviously is not doing that.

More sham classes, the counselors were in on it and UNC scapegoated a professor.

No equal was a slogan for athletic posters, like greatest show on turf we used in late 90's or championship under construction in 1995. Every program uses slogans like that for billboards/posters. If you guys can't see the difference there really is no need to continue the conversation.

They are a very good athletic program better than most and now we also know they are one of the best at bending the rules.

Can't wait to see what this spectacular UNC led investigation will bring up......

When people commit crimes I think the police should let the criminals investigate themselves and come to the conclusions instead of the justice system.

The only interesting thing about that article is the amount of money and lawyers they have at their disposal, that and the typo in bullet #5.

Yawn.

Anyone who has spent time around pro football is not surprised about this at all. Many universities have players that read at 3rd grade level who end up in the NFL. My best guess is that UNC is one of the worst but there are others. I have walked away from more that one player just wondering how he ever got out of high school. Here is the real shame of the whole system. We have different standards for athletes than the rest of the students. If you can't get in as a student you should not be able to get in as an athlete. Why do we turn away a student with better credentials just because they don't play a sport. When we have separate rules for athletes that is where the corruption starts.
Before you even start this is not in defense of UNC. I will root for ANYONE who plays them.

So they are admitting that 3% aren't college literate? If that is true, what the Hades are they doing in college? :?:

Well my answer to Mr. Dean is that he is a big phony. If you really want to show me something Mr. Dean you need to start a policy that says if you can't get in as a student you can't play here. Then there is absolutely no reason for made up classes. But then again if you did that all athletes would really be student athletes and that just would not work would it? You would be showing the athletes that have worked hard and done the right thing that you value their hard work. That would be just too high a price to pay now wouldn't it?

Richard Sherman did graduate with a 3.9 from Stanford and may have even graduated early. So he was doing something right, unless of course, he was given grades.
