You'd be wrong. What you say doesn't make you a thug anymore than covering yourself in flour makes you a biscuit.

He is a thug the same way as Joe Namath was a thug for predicting the outcome of the Super Bowl with the “I guarantee you” remark or the other trash talk that went on that week. He's a thug in the same way that John McEnroe was everytime he stepped on the court or when Tony Stewart (or any other driver) calls someone and A**hole or gets in a fight.
Now we don't call them thug's because they don't have certain "thug" qualities (feel free to take a guess what the main one would be). Like he said, thug is only used to describe a certain group of people any more.
Not race baiting are you?
I never said anything about race! That fact that "race" came to mind instead of "athletic ability", being a male or highly competitive etc, etc proves we all know what it's code for.
I only
asked the question and I apologize. It's just that anytime, it seems, that the word "thug" is used on here many posters immediately associate it with race. And I don't buy the concept that a thug has to have a criminal record to be a thug in essence.

Ok, good...and I like the analogy...except it reminds me of a politically incorrect joke about obese women.

I'm sorry, but that's a load of bull. I work in an environment where I see thugs every day and race has nothing to do with it. They are black, white, Hispanic, Caribbean, Eurpoean and every other possible hyphenated designation anyone can create. Enough words have already been stolen by the PC police. Sherman pulled that ridiculous claim to try to divert attention from his juvenile behavior. It's sad to me that so many people are buying it. And if I had to label it, I'd say Sherman is a punk, just like McEnroe and Stewart and Kyle Busch and a host of other spoiled athletes.
I don't know what work you do but unless they are violent criminals they're not "thug" according to the proper definition, if you do work with violent criminals you should know better than to apply "thug" to someone that isn't (Sherman doesn't have a criminal record, so clearly not a "thug"). Actually the PC police are try to keep the word reserved for it proper use instead of being a replacement "N-word".
We're not debating if he's a "punk" which could apply (but wasn't used).
http://espn991.com/do-white-athletes-ge ... ke-a-thug/
I work in a maximum security prison. I know what a thug is. I never called Sherman a thug so you need to run that accusation back. I called him a punk, which I believe is very fitting. His demeanor and his attitude in that interview was thug-like; and I can safely say that because I see it every day; but that doesn't make him a thug. The world is full of wannabe thugs. As for it being a replacement N-word, I'm not buying it. Sherman tossed that little gem to try to inject race and divert attention from his behavior.
Sorry but I don't know what he did "thug-like"! He didn't talk about "popping", "robbing", "hitting", "whacking" or even "playing the "knocking out game" with someone. From what I know, saying you're the best isn't "thug-like" demeanor/attitude. It might be punk-like, but I know thugs and that's not even close. Again let's leave "thug" to the criminals and use it for any race. No just non-whites that seem to be "forgetting their place".
If there is any doubt google "thug" and see how many times it used with non-whites vs whites. BTW, I've never heard a NASCAR driver referred to as a thug.

I think almost everyone on here has been "thug-like" at times. Heck I'll even put myself at the top of the list.

That wasn't meant to "catch" anyone but I think it proves the point of what comes to most people minds. And I'm not leaving myself out of jumping to the same conclusion.

You're trying awfully hard to make my comments into something they're not and still saying I called him a thug when I didn't. I'm sorry, but I simply won't allow you to do that. In the interest of saving space, I'm just going to say that I stick by everything I said based on my personal experience.

I'm fine with disagreeing, but still waiting for the retraction of the accusation that I called him a thug. Haven't seen that yet.

If I am, I bet I'm the only thug on the planet who listens to George Jones.

I don't think so. We've got a guy here who is most definitely a thug and he has a George Jones tattoo.

I didn't said you called him one if you read the above quote I said if you work with violent criminals you should know better than to call him one. I was giving you the benefit of doubt that you wasn't calling him one.
So I think it's your turn for the retraction.
I'm still trying to figure out how you can call someone "thug-like" without implying they're a "thug" however.

He's a true thug now, he's been arrested! Now he'll never get a job.
