Why would anyone go to a franchise restaurant in Boone, let alone GC?

Tell your folks to try Coyote Kitchen across the parking lot. Or any of the scores of amazing, one-of-a-kind spots in town.

because of the senior citizen discounts and military discounts and such. Also the variety of food is nice at an ok quality. A lot of those other restaurants have very specific types of food not everyone likes and tend to be a little more expensive for a good meal, and yes I've eaten at about every joint in Boone so I can speak from experience on that. I'm sure plenty of others on here have as well.

Here's a review from an old head - I like Golden Corral - as mentioned they have senior discounts and just about anything one would want to (or could/can) eat -
"Montani Semper Liberi"

This is just a guess, but if you don't want to eat a lot at a time their prices were kind of high. You're paying for a buffet no matter how little you eat. With so many people eating less, buffets are not really the places they are going.

The discounts may be good for seniors and military but they have to have a lot of other business to offset the discounts. (I know seniors to eat much, but they still have to prepare so much)

Based on my family, young adults didn't care for it much.

No beer, nuf said.

Lot's of local places, everyone has their fav that they have to eat at everytime they cam.

The main positive is that they had lots of food, that wasn't too bad.

I personally liked it from time to time but I didn't go much because of what I ate "to get my money worth".

They are older and the newer establishments just doesn't appeal to them.
Plus, my dad takes Chemo and certain foods taste good after treatments while most foods don't. He seems to find it at GC.

I know lots of people that ate there and it was usually busy, regardless of what the stories said. Rumor around Boone is that someone was dipping and that's been said for a long time before they closed it down. Just a rumor but there are plenty of restaurants in Boone far less busy that are still open. No one will really know why. It just is.

Used to hit it up every Tuesday for student night. Could get away from the crap campus food and stuff your face for $8. Hard to beat.

A lot of good memories for sure...

lol @ the poster who mentioned going to Coyote Kitchen over GC. GTFO.

You ate at Golden Corral to escape crap campus food? Seems to me like you escaped crap food on campus to get crap food somewhere else.

Golden Corral is garbage.

How dare they eat somewhere without your approval.

Regardless of where you live, you sometimes just want some chain restaurant food to calm a craving.

I sat through too many High Country Host meetings about the Eat Local movement and enjoy good food too much to bother with Applebees, GC ect.

To each their own.

Do you live in Boone currently?

If not, you NEVER eat at any chain restaurant where you live?

Not anymore, unfortunately. I grab fast food when I have to, but for the most part, when I sit down somewhere and tip a waitress, I want something good, not a glorified Lean Cuisine like you'd get at Chili's or Applebees. But I do live in Durham where great food spots are plentiful just like Boone. I'm sure my hand would be forced more often if I lived in Mr. Arie. But then again I'd probably just cook more.

A lot of chains in Boone have revenue issues. They make most of their profit from Sept. to March (Football, Ski seasons and App In Session). April and May are break even. June, July, and Aug are lean months and hard to get wait staff. Sagebrush has come close to closing down some summers.
That's what I do. I gripe and I know things.

The hostile takeover of local/mom & pop establishments by chain restaurants is somewhat of a pet peeve of mine. I take no pleasure in seeing a new Outback/Crapplebees/You Name It restaurant go up in my location. Nor do I enjoy supporting these places. There is nothing unique about eating at a chain restaurant. That isn't to say I avoid them at all costs, but there isn't anything special about them. I went to CrApplebees last weekend (had a gift card) and probably had one of the worst steaks in my life. One less chain restaurant in Boone is a victory in my opinion.
