Was the argument ever that we wouldn't get higher-caliber recruits in FBS than in FCS? I find it hard to believe that anyone thought that, but maybe so.roachgone wrote:Wonder if all the FBS naysayers ,the nothing but 3rd tier national championship proponents , honestly believe we could have attracted even 20% of this class as an FCS school. ?? Re: Recruiting, 2014
If you'd been diligently building/supporting your program and gotten to the point where you were at the top of your league, then all of a sudden a couple of FCS teams came in and immediately signed the top two ranked recruiting classes in your league before they're even officially members, you'd probably be a little nervous too.moehler wrote:reading some the team message boards, we seem to have really gotten under the skin of some of the Ark St fans, their complaints have ranged from the ranking of our recruits aren't accurate, (but of course, theirs are), to complaining about twitter. We seem to have got their attention and they seem to be annoyed that a 1st year FBS program, can be successful, atleast on paper, in their first year of recruiting.

There was a lot of doomsday speculation from the other side of the isle over the many years of debate before the issue was finally decided. I distinctly remember "not being able to compete for FBS recruits" being one of them.EastHallApp wrote:Was the argument ever that we wouldn't get higher-caliber recruits in FBS than in FCS? And we beat ya'll for 4 kids (Per 247), but are one year behind y'all on the transitional schedule. You can offer recruits immediate playing time at the FBS level THIS year, we cant do that until 2015. Your 2014 RS will be playing for a bowl eligible team the first year they play, but ours will have to wait until their second year of play. I think that gives you a recruiting edge for 2014. The point is we're going to see a lot of each other on the recruiting trails over the next years, especially with Satterfield's renewed efforts in NC. I suspect this will only add to a rivalry that kicks off in 2018, and I'm looking forward to it.Rekdiver wrote:We beat Charlotte on about 6 kids .
I think y'all have really surprised the SBC with your recruiting, and I think you'll be more successful on the field than they expected as well. APP will be fine in FBS, but I think sustained success will be more difficult to achieve. Congrats on a strong first FBS recruiting class, and good luck next year!Gonzo wrote:There was a lot of doomsday speculation from the other side of the isle over the many years of debate before the issue was finally decided. Yeah dude, you're totally right. We have double the fans, an athletics center that cost more than your entire stadium, and we've actually had a winning season before; yet the only reason you're not destroying us in recruiting is because of our transition timeline. Riiiighhtt.![]()

Well they are going to see what death looks like up close and personal in 2018. We need to offer to buy all the UNCC student tickets to save themthe embarassment.

I'm sorry, did I insult you? What in my statement cannot be taken seriously, or was so offensive to demand that sort of response?
If you're a 17 year old kid with two offers, would you take the one that says you can play at the highest level immediately, or the one that says you have to wait a year? All kids are different and want different things. Some want to prove they are a star right away, some can wait. We went head to head on 10 kids, 6 chose you, 4 chose us. That's not a huge difference. If one kid had changed his mind, we would have seen an even split.
I'm glad your training facility cost so much. If that's what you hang your hat on, great. I work in the engineering field, so I understand the extra cost of grading and building on the side of a mountain and around existing infrastructure vs. on a flat recreational field. Didn't the Solfield center also require land purchases, which added to that cost? I see that the Solfield and the Judy Rose center are approximately the same in square footage, so why is there such a cost difference? Is it the black and gold toilets for your players to poop on?
One year before Michigan, ASU averaged 13,600. It's as likely that we could experience the same kind of growth in fan base as it is that your numbers fall if you have a few rough seasons. I just get a very "Carolina-esk" feel from some fans here - sitting on top of your mountain looking down at everyone else. As for the rest of you (the majority), I enjoy your comments on this board and the ninernation.net. You'll always be welcome at my tailgate in 2018 - I'll have some green homebrew for ya!

Re: Recruiting, 2014
Point of clarity: The Sofield indoor practice facility isn't the state-of-the-art training facility he was talking about. That is a separate building. The giant press box-looking structure in the stadium is home to the most impressive collection of sport amenities in North Carolina. It's absolutely lavish.
Now, back to your debate.

Re: Recruiting, 2014
If you were 17, would you accept an offer from a start-up program that offers a better chance of immediate playing time; or go to the deeper program with facilities that have been called top 40 in the nation by an NFL scout (I wasn't referring to Sofield) and 30,000 rabid fans, but probably not start as soon?
All I'm alluding to is that the playing field is not as even as you would like to think besides the fact that we're both entering FBS at relatively the same time.
Also, our regular season home attendance for the 2005 season, 2 years before Michigan and even before our first National Championship, was over 20k so not sure where you got that from.

Re: Recruiting, 2014
There's nothing "Carolina-esque"(fify) about not being threatened by UNCC. I can accept the fact that ECU has an advantage over us in football and see it as similar to the gap between App and UNCC. Can you?

Actually 20,500: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006_Appal ... tball_teamHighFlying49er wrote: One year before Michigan, ASU averaged 13,600. It's as likely that we could experience the same kind of growth in fan base as it is that your numbers fall if you have a few rough seasons.
Plus, there's the whole matter of beating Michigan. Program-changing, college football history-making wins aren't that easy to come by. I actually don't see you guys even having a game like that on your schedule between now and 2018, much less winning it.

I just learned from Ninernation.net, that we had the #1 recruiting class in the Sun Belt.
I guess they actually do know something about us besides what they assume!

Believe me, we'd LOVE to do something about that! That comment has less to do with any perceived threat, more to do with an attitude of "We are better than you because "X", an you can never be as good as us because we are just who we are." The mighty often fall hard. Ask any Southern Miss fan.Longrifle28 wrote:I just get a very "Carolina-esk" feel from some fans here

My figures for the 2004 attendance came from averaging the figures here. I was thinking the Michigan game was in 2005, so that was my mistake. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2004_Appal ... tball_team

Re: Recruiting, 2014
The problem with your logic is that nothing changed besides our administration between the 2004 and 2005 seasons. We went 6-5 in 2004 and yet the first home game of the 2005 season saw a crowd of 23,347. The only difference was Chancellor Peacock and Cobb. We would then go on to win our first national championship later that year. And another. And another. The Michigan win came 3 seasons after we were putting 23k butts in seats.
You're like 0 for 3 on assumptions man, I could do this all day.

Didn't we move the starting times of games in 2005 too? That helped a bunch. Especially with tailgating.

And didn't we put that 23k in a stadium that held only 16k (actual seats)?
