I like how they make these rules in the interest of safety yet they add practice time and games to the schedule in the interest of money.

Saben and the other coaches might have not "technically" sponsored the rule change, but you better believe once the found out about it,they placed some phone calls to make sure it got to the rules committee. Fortunately, there seems to be alot of resistance and push back from schools such as Oregon, Auburn, Texas AM that will, hopefully, give the spineless NCAA pause to think about what they are doing.

True --- and as I noted, what other coaches/schools out there really want to do anything to HELP Alabama ---moehler wrote:Saben and the other coaches might have not "technically" sponsored the rule change, but you better believe once the found out about it,they placed some phone calls to make sure it got to the rules committee. The Air Force Coach said it was over player safety? Does this speak to the integrity of the AFA?????

I learned a lot about the NCAA in the movie "Schooled: The Price of College Sports". It was made last year and is on Netflix streaming if you have it.

I liked a quote I heard on ESPN last night. I forgot the context and the author but it was something to the effect of "What's next? Take away 4th downs? Kids are less likely to get hurt with only 3 downs."MountainMan wrote:"As far as healthy or safety issues, that's like saying the defense shouldn't blitz after a first down because they're a little fatigued and there's liable to be a big collision in the backfield." -- Gus Malzahn

Remember when the wishbone was dealing fits in the college ranks, until coaches figured out how to solve it? Coaches need to man up and learn to solve HUNH, don't hide behind rules changes to solve it.

Players are already paid. Tuition, books, room and board, etc. If they want to be paid a salary (euphemistically called a stipend) ,let them try to sign with professional teams right out of high school. If we start paying players, ASU is doomed.appdaze wrote:So Saban wants to be able to put fresh D line in ever few snaps to throw off offensive linemen allowing the D to get to the QB quicker because sacking the QB and putting fresh bodies against tired bodies in the trenches will create fewer injuries.![]()
Saban doesn't want to lose to Oregon/Florida/Arizona or other schools who use the offense that he doesn't use.
The rules committee is hiding behind the guise of player safety but really its playing in to the hands of a few big money teams. If they are willing to change the game to this degree for the sake of the Sabans and others like him then they have beyond made it obvious to the world they no longer care about the players and only care about lining their pockets. Yes we all knew this before but I feel this would be one of the worst crossings of that line in many years. The fact that the powers that be enjoy lining their own pockets is probably the only reason players haven't been paid yet.

I am surprised that there has been no mention on this board of the meeting between players from Northwestern's football team and the Nation Labor Board about the possibility of unionizing. They met in Chicago on Monday or Tuesday.

There was a thread about it when they first mentioned it, but I don't think anyone believes there is any chance the NLRB will certify this.

Players aren't "paid" by the people who are making the money off of them. Money for scholarships comes from tax money, donated money, and student fees.
As I've mentioned on here before players are eventually going to get paid. Nothing is going to stop that. In another 50 years college football will be nothing like it is now and teams will probably be sponsored by schools instead of being student athletes aka part of the school. It will turn in to a true minor league for the NFL.
Re: From the Sun Belt board - a STUPID new rule?
Just to update this thread, the committee tabled that 10 second proposal for at least a year. Will not be considered at this time.

They are getting paid regardless of who is picking up the bill, but who is it that is making money off of them? If it is taking donations and student fees ( not taxes) to keep the department alive how is someone making money off of them?appdaze wrote:JCline0429 wrote:Players are already paid. In 50 years nothing will be like it is now. There will probably be much more on line learning and smaller classes of brick and mortar. I would find it very hard to believe though that a school is going to sponsor a team of non students. The problem with paying players a salary is that it will end sports at all but the big boys. It would be the end to conferences like ours. Please understand that the vast majority of programs in this country do not break even. There may be an NFL minor league but I would be very surprised if it were paid for with university dollars.
