Duggar Baucom and VMI still playing; Apps not so much

Historic home game for VMI basketball
The Keydets play their first national postseason tournament home game today against IPFW.

Much like the rest of the nation, VMI’s basketball team got a glimpse Thursday night of how things roll these days in one of the nation’s fast-rising Division I hoops entities.
Welcome to the burgeoning Summit League, everybody.
If the Keydets didn’t realize what kind of challenge they face against IPFW in today’s second round of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament at Cameron Hall, they do now after watching Summit champion North Dakota State stun Oklahoma 80-75 in the first round of the NCAA tournament’s West Regional in Spokane, Wash.
Now comes 25-10 IPFW —  otherwise known as Indiana-Purdue University Fort Wayne — to Lexington as the Keydets’ opponent in VMI’s first-ever national postseason tournament home game.
“I’m telling you, it’s a good league,” said VMI coach Duggar Baucom of a loop that was formerly known as the Mid-Continent Conference (1989-2007) before the Summit was formed.
“Plus, it’s unprecedented success for IPFW’s program this season. They’re easily the best team in Indiana. Of all of the 10 Division I schools there they have the most wins. That’s pretty good. That’s a pretty heady basketball-laden state. They’re the only one there still playing.”
IPFW tied with South Dakota State for second behind North Dakota State in the Summit regular-season race. The Mastodons saw their shot for making the NCAA extinguished in a 60-57 loss to North Dakota State in the conference tournament title game played on the Bison’s home court in Sioux Falls.
After leading all the way in their 111-100 first-round upset at Canisius on Tuesday, the Keydets (20-12) now get their shot at continuing their season at Cameron, where they stand 13-2 this season. VMI’s only two home losses came to Big South foes Liberty (85-80 on Jan. 11) and Coastal Carolina (83-78 on Feb. 12), a contest in which the Keydets blew an 18-point halftime lead.
Despite VMI’s impressive home credentials, IPFW opened as a 1 1⁄2-point favorite at most Las Vegas books Friday.
The Keydets continue to ride the exploits of one of the nation’s highest-scoring trio of players. Center D.J. Covington registered a career-high 37 points in the win at Canisius, while guards Rodney Glasgow and QJ Peterson each had 28 points. The threesome donated all but 18 of the Keydets’ 111 points.
Covington’s 37 points marked the most points in VMI postseason history, surpassing Will Bynum’s 34 points in the Keydets’ loss to Rutgers in the 1976 NCAA Eastern Regional final.
The Mastodons shoot the ball well — 49.2 percent from the field (13th in Division I), including 39.4 percent from 3-point range (tied for 16th).
IPFW’s size could be troublesome for VMI. The Mastodons front line consists of 6-foot-9, 295-pound Steve Forbes, Luis Jacobo (6-5, 220) and Michael Kibiloski (6-7, 245) and that will be a handful for the size-challenged Keydets.
“We’re going to have to play our best game,” Baucom said. “Their big guys are good and their guards can shoot it. I think they do as good a job as anybody we’ve played of putting the right guys where they need to be and enhance their strengths.”
Today’s winner advances to the CIT’s third round that will be contested next Tuesday through Thursday at sites yet to be determined.

CollegeInsider.com Tournament
Today’s second round
IPFW (25-10) at VMI (20-12)
1 p.m. at Cameron Hall
Notes: Not only would a victory today extend their season, but it would also allow the Keydets to tie the program record for home wins in a season with 14. The 1976-77 squad that made the NCAA’s Elite Eight went 14-0 at the school’s former home known as “The Pit.” ... Furthermore, a VMI triumph would square ninth-year boss Duggar Baucom’s career coaching record at 139-139. ... IPFW does its work through community effort. Senior F Luis Jacobo leads the Mastodons in scoring (14.8 ppg) and shoots 40 percent from 3-point range. Mammoth F Steve Forbes shoots 60.6 percent from the field and averages 12.2 points and 5.3 rebounds. Freshman G Mo Evans (9.8 ppg) is smooth from downtown, shooting 46 percent from beyond the arc. Senior G Pierre Bland shoots 52.5 percent and leads the club in assists (152). ... The good news for VMI is IPFW is not exactly Fort Knox on the defensive end, allowing opponents to shoot 46 percent from the field. ... VMI G Rodney Glasgow’s eight assists vs. Canisius allowed him to join Richard Little (2000-04) as only the second Keydet in history to record 500 or more helpers. ... IPFW has won six of its past seven games, while VMI has won nine of its past 12. ... IPFW’s 97-91 win over Akron in Wednesday’s first-round game was the program’s postseason at the D-I level.

This is a pay to play tournament. A total waste of athletic dollars. But to stay on topic Duggar would be a good choice.

Why is a guy who in 9 years at VMI has a 139-139 overall record and is 68-80 in conference play a good choice? He hasn't touched the big dance his whole career. That sounds like a slightly worse Houston Fancher.

VMI will not win half of its next 278 games if Baucom leaves.

They haven't won half their conference games with him. So again I ask what has he accomplished to make him a good candidate? What is it that I seem to be missing with him? I don't see a good candidate here.

He's coaching in one of the most difficult environments in the country with one of the smallest budgets and he's winning half his games. Anybody who can do that at VMI is a solid coach. I'd be delighted if he was the choice.

What 89 said. He has shown he can recruit and be competitive at a school in the mountains. Take out the military equation, and that might be enough to push his record over .500.
