Re: Charlotte Observer: Lutz is Leading Candidate
As he should be. I don't understand the disdain some have for Bobby on here. Granted he had a couple down years at the end of his tenure, but he had a bunch of tournament appearances in CUSA when it had Louisville, Cincy, and some others. He's passionate and widely considered one of the best assistants in the country. This is a slam dunk in my opinion if we can pull it off.

I just see his A-10 years at Charlotte and am skeptical as he relied on JUCO transfers and didn't recruit well at all.

Here's a funny aside to the story. Bobby gets his final check from UNCC next Monday for $237,000 since they fired him in 2010 with four years left on his contract.

I'm surprised to hear this after talking to his cousin a couple weeks ago. Lutz is no basketball genius, but he can motivate players and he's tough as nails. I hated guarding him in high school.

At the same time, he's assisted Gottfried in recruiting several McDonald's All American's (Rodney Purvis, TJ Warren, Tyler Lewis, Cat Barber) and other top 100 players (Kyle Washington, BeeJay Anya, Caleb Martin, Abdul Malik Abu) to NC State. I'm not that concerned with his recruiting abilities. If he wasn't good at CLT then he's gotten some good experience learning in Raleigh.
End of the day, if he can get who he brings in to gel and play as one unit on the floor, then that will win games.

He will probably make more from the job he was fired from 4 years ago than he will as HC at App.T-Dog wrote:Here's a funny aside to the story. Bobby gets his final check from UNCC next Monday for $237,000 since they fired him in 2010 with four years left on his contract.

Re: Charlotte Observer: Lutz is Leading Candidate
I like that he's a "A native of Catawba, N.C." and has spent most his time coaching and recruiting in NC and he doesn't overlook NC talent. Just in Caleb and Cody Martin and Lewis you have three kids within 25 miles of each other. NC has talent and it's hard to believe so many are missed.
He might not stay forever, but I think he would have to show what he can do (which would be good for us), before he was offered another HC job. This would seem to me like it would be longer than a couple years.

He is a very safe, conservative pick, will stabilize the program, will win on average, 15-18 games a year, hiring him is not going to motivate more students, alumi to come to games. I agree that we should be worried about his recruiting, facts are, his team got their asses handed to them in the A10, he didn't recruit very well the last 4 years at UNCC.

Disagree about motivating more students. It is an easy formula...win games and more kids will show. Capel was supposed to excite the students but couldn't win. Due to this no one showed up. When Fancher was winning we packed the HCC fairly well.

Better not screw this up? Didn't you say just last week that Lutz would be another lazy hire? Can't hate on Cobb both ways. Lay off Cobb for 5 minutes...holy cow.

I just hope he's ready to work. Capel left him a dumpster fire the likes of which he's never seen.

I also disagree about the motivation. I would immediately be excited enough to come to more games. One can look at his UNCc tenure as a glass half empty or half full. Yes, he was disinterested in the move to the A-10 and it showed, and eventually cost him his job. However, his first seven years were really, really strong, and can't be dismissed. Even in his last season there, the one where he was fired, he won 19 games! Had Capel won 19 games in his last season, he would be signing an extension.moehler wrote:He is a very safe, conservative pick, will stabilize the program, will win on average, 15-18 games a year, hiring him is not going to motivate more students, alumi to come to games. Most forty-whiner fans would take him back in a New York minute. They are hating the fact that he may soon be wearing the black and gold.

Not my first choice but certainly not the worst either.
Re: Charlotte Observer: Lutz is Leading Candidate
well, with the Louisville assistant taking the UNCW job, Its starting to look like its going to be Lutz, not the worst choice, but don't think he is going to make us an NCAA tournament team, hope I'm wrong.

Re: Charlotte Observer: Lutz is Leading Candidate
Baby steps. Let's keep our players out of jail, get their GPA's above the cut off, and beat every D-2/MEAC team we play. Then we can talk about post seasons.moehler wrote:well, with the Louisville assistant taking the UNCW job, Its starting to look like its going to be Lutz, not the worst choice, but don't think he is going to make us an NCAA tournament team, hope I'm wrong.
My good buddy (State grad) is convinced this a home run hire for us. It might be an 'easy' hire or one that won't likely get us to the big dance in just a few years, but considering how Capel destroyed our once respectable program, I'll be thrilled if we land a coach with a resume like Lutz's.

Re: Charlotte Observer: Lutz is Leading Candidate
Lutz would definitely be able to show a big improvement quickly, since we are as low as you can get at the moment, but would he be able to get us beyond an average team to one that is competing for NCAA births? I just don't know if he still has the fire in him to build us back up that far. Also, will he do it the right way and get our APR and off court issues fixed???
