The Memphis school system leaves a lot to be desired (just trying to stay politically correct).Watauga72 wrote:Not to interject on a good rant, but wasn't that student with 13 F's Dasmine Cathey from Memphis?appbio91 wrote:The HBO Real Sports piece said that they had been replaced by a requirement that 50% of athletes graduate. I believe they said SAT requirements were ditched in 2003? I personally do not know I was just going by what they said. I find it hard to believe kids reading at 4th or 5th grade level such as those at chapel hole achieved any minimum standards. One of the former UNC athletes they interviewed had made 13 F's, 7 D's and graduated with a degree from UNC Chapel Hill in Interdisciplinary Studies. He voluntarily took a literacy test and scored in the low middle school range. At least he can read Hop on Pop to his kid. If that were my Alma Mater I would never donate another single red Efin cent. I am embarrassed to live in a state where that hole is called the flagship university. I am so glad my daughter did not listen to all the idiots that told her she was selling herself short by going to App.McLeansvilleAppFan wrote:I thought there were mininum SAT scores required still. Former UNC athletes saying they were told what their major would be and handed a class schedule on day one. Confirmed phantom class stories. This story was actually a very good case for paying these athletes because some of them are getting screwed. They are admitted even though they are not capable of succeeding and being granted worthless degrees so the NCAA and the university can appear to fulfilling their mission to graduate 50% of athletes. I was totally against paying athletes but some of these kids are totally being exploited and getting nothing in return. I would rather see the system return to the days when there was a minimum SAT but I suppose that would be seen as discriminatory in these politically correct times.

Guess I wasn't very clear....I think he played for Memphis University, not UNC-CH.
UNC-CH's issues are related to independent study classes in AFAM History that were apparently less than stringent, plus accusations of funneling student athletes to these particular classes "taught" by the head of the department. Also claims from a researcher that some athletes read at 4th grade level yet were able to graduate.

My fault, I thought you were referring to him as being a product of Memphis high schools.Watauga72 wrote:Guess I wasn't very clear....I think he played for Memphis University, not UNC-CH.

Here is an interesting, very sad but at the same time a bit inspiring, article about the young man. No doubt he bears the responsibility for his life choices, including avoiding responsibility for learning how to read at an earlier age and fathering multiple children with different women .... at the same time, no less! However, the school system that passed him through to graduation shares blame as well.
