I'd rather have a coach that stresses fundamentals and sound defense than an offense that runs up and down the court jacking up shots all night long. VMI is 1st in the Big South in scoring and last in defense. When I look at the teams in the NCAA Tournament one thing stands out about every one, defense. They play physical defense and contest every shot. The old adage is as true for basketball as football. Offense may sell tickets but defense wins championships.EastHallApp wrote:He's performed above the school's historical level - sometimes far above - and plays a super-high-tempo, high-scoring style that provides a draw for fans and a differentiator for recruits. Yes VMI had some successful teams in the 70s before many of us on this board were board and before any college basketball recruit was born. In the 70s military schools could still recruit and VMI athletics were well funded. Now if their football team wins 3 games in a season it's reason for celebration.hapapp wrote:Many here don't recall that in the early years (mid 70s) of our SoCon adventure VMI was a strong performer including an elite 8 appearance. It's not impossible to win there.EastHallApp wrote:He's performed above the school's historical level - sometimes far above - and plays a super-high-tempo, high-scoring style that provides a draw for fans and a differentiator for recruits. Until Duggar Baucom got there in 2005 they had practically no success on the hardwood since 1977. He's taken them to the Big South finals three times, won the military basketball challenge this year, put players in the NBA, and is now in the final 4 of the CIT. He's done all of this with very few players with D1 offers from other schools (basically a D2 team), a toxic student environment (freshman hazing is a big part of cadet life), next to no budget, est.
Also when asked about defense he points out that his team has led the nation is steals.

VMI wasn't "last in defense" in the Big South. They did allow the most points per game - because they play at, by far, the fastest tempo in the league.Kgfish wrote:I'd rather have a coach that stresses fundamentals and sound defense than an offense that runs up and down the court jacking up shots all night long. They were fifth in the league in FG% defense, third in 3pt% defense, and fifth in overall defensive efficiency (per kenpom). They also led the league in turnover margin and A/TO ratio.
As for the offense just "jacking up shots all night long," they not only led the Big South in offensive efficiency, they were 74th in the nation (next-best Big South team was at 115).
As far as the old adage about offense selling tickets, the reality is that offensive efficiency has been a slightly better predictor of the national title winner than defensive efficiency, at least over the past decade. Also, four of the eight remaining teams are better offensively than defensively, including Michigan, who ranks second in the nation in offense and 99th in defense.

Another point on the offense/defense question- of the top 25 teams in the nation in offensive efficiency, only two missed the NCAA Tournament: Iona (who's 22-11) and Georgia State (25–9, Sun Belt regular season champs).
Of the top 25 defensive teams, eight missed the tournament - including 14-19 Northwestern and 17-15 Maryland.

Nice research. I think you make a good case and he would make an interesting choice. I still fall on the side that wants someone a bit younger who can relate to the campus and understands our situation better.EastHallApp wrote:Another point on the offense/defense question- of the top 25 teams in the nation in offensive efficiency, only two missed the NCAA Tournament: Iona (who's 22-11) and Georgia State (25–9, Sun Belt regular season champs).

Re: New Hoops Coach WILL NOT Be Bobby Lutz
To be fair, I don't mean to suggest that Kgfish's concerns about Baucom's style of play are totally unfounded. His teams are much more offensive-oriented than defensive, and you typically don't want those to be so far out of balance, even for elite teams.
A team like Michigan is a rarity to make it this far. Teams that rate that low defensively (or offensively) typically go put pretty early - see Duke and Creighton.
However, I'd guess most of us would agree that potential early NCAA Tournament exits are probably not one of our primary concerns about App basketball right now.

Baucom was a police officer in Charlotte for 9 years before going in to coaching. He's always done a good graduating young men of great character too. He seems like the right guy to fix our APR issues and clean up the program.

If were talking D2 Head Coaches, Linc Darner should be at the top of the list.
Best winning percentage From(07-present) among all Florida NCAA schools(yes even the GATORS)school
at .77%, GATORs at .73.
Ranked 2nd in wins among all Florida NCAA schools since 07-08 season at 174. GATORS are number one but they also play more games than D2.
3 teams in D2 to have 20 plus win seasons since 07-08 season to present.
1 of 2 NCAA schools to play in NCAA Tournament past seven seasons.
5 Coach of the year awards
5 SSC conference championships
5 SSC Conference Tournament Championships
Team Avgs over 80 plus points a game for last 7 seasons.
Rebuilt 2 programs!!!!
Brother(Tige) is a former player for the Mountaineers
Proven winner!

"In 1996, when Lutz was an assistant at Charlotte, he was a finalist to replace Tom Apke as Appalachian’s coach when Buzz Peterson was hired. He became Charlotte’s head coach two years later."hapapp wrote:W-SJ article on Lutz taking his name out of consideration:

I tend toward the position that the "leading candidate" stamp placed on Lutz materialized purely on message board rumor traffic and nothing more. I also lean toward the position that Lutz rather smugly made it look as though he was turning down an offer as some sort of retribution for being passed over by ASU years ago. I'm willing to bet he never received an actual job offer from CC.
"Lutz was reported to be the leading candidate for the Appalachian State job but Mike Flynn, Appalachian State’s sports-information director, said Wednesday that no candidate had been deemed a front-runner internally."
Flynn reiterated that Friday. “We are having discussions with several people,” Flynn said. “There are several candidates being evaluated and no one had or has been identified as a leading candidate.”
I can easily buy that line. CC is not known for communicating very much to the press. Period. He's really not known for tipping his hand before he's ready to go with a plan. In fact, we really don't know for a fact who is on his short list. Who knows the identity of the "several people" CC is having discussions with? Methinks only a select few know for certain what the short list looks like.
I'm as anxious as the next guy to have this process end yesterday--with full and complete confidence that a prudent selection was made and that that our basketball future is in competent hands. I don't subscribe to the complaint that it's taking too long. It isn't late yet. If we're still scratching our heads one week after the national championship game--there will be valid reason for discomfort. I don't think that'll happen.
CC needs a big splash and big headlines with this choice. He also has to please two chancellors, the BOT and the ASU fandom--many of whom have begun to raise questions about his leadership. He knows this has to be a walk-off homerun.
What I keep thinking about is how he might go for the splash in conjunction with Final Four Week and the NABC in Dallas. I don't think we're going to "meet" our new head coach for at least another week unless some ESPN geek blows it out of the water on some insider trading info. Andy Katz and Co. have eyes and ears under every rock.
Oh, by the way, methinks we are making this process seem endless and hopeless to some doubting fans by continuing to post under a "Bobby Lutz" thread. Methinks we need to bury this thread and start posting in a more positive "climate." Bobby Lutz is "dead" to us!
I'm looking for MMB followers to change direction with me to..."What Will CC Decide?

As per the Big South web site 2013-14 men's basketball statistics VMI was first in scoring offense and last in scoring defense.
