What Will CC Decide?

Unread post by asu66 » Sat Mar 29, 2014 3:41 pm

Guys and gals, methinks we are making this basketball hiring process seem endless and hopeless to some doubting fans by continuing to post under a "Bobby Lutz" thread. Methinks we need to bury that thread and start posting in a more positive "climate." Bobby Lutz is "dead" to us! He works at Planet Wolfpack!

I'm looking for MMB members to change direction with me to..."What Will CC Decide?" Who'll follow me?

I think Charlie had a good direction with Lutz, and Rhoades. Those two seem to be top of the line assistants. I think it speaks well of the search that Rhoades and Lutz were "at" the top of the list.

Now I every reason to believe that he has a second group. I think that group probably includes a couple of people we know, Baucom, Maybe Darner, and hopefully Matt gets a shot. I also think the group probably includes some folks we have not talked about and thought of.

I'd say it gets done in a few days from here.

I'd also say he is earning his pay this weekend!

I'm here and standing by. Figure the Lutz thread should be locked. Nothing to see and nothing more to discuss. Time to look forward.

Sounds good to me. I'd be very happy with either McMahon or Baucom. I'm sure there are numerous assistants and D2 coaches who could also do well, though I'm simply not familiar enough with most of them to have a strong opinion (esp. the D2 guys). Have enjoyed reading people's views on here and hope Cobb finds a great coach whenever one is available.

Why does the Barton Coach never get mentioned for any jobs?

It may be his decision. He knows that his practice of prayer--often on the court with his team--is acceptable as long as he coaches at a private, parochial institution. If/When he goes to a public institution, he'll have to be a lot more discrete with it or face disciplinary action.

I'd be open to the guy from VMI, only from the standpoint that he would make the team fun to watch. Even if he gets us back to a .500 team, that's a hell of lot better than where we are now. I still think we should go hard after Levelle Moton at HC @ NCCU. I think our only play is to give him a substantial salary bump from what he is making at NCCU. I wish I knew more about the D2 coach from Metro State, but I can't say either way whether I like him as option.

I watched the NCCU game in the tournament. Now they were clearly outmanned and they honestly may not have been able to make the adjustments from the talent level....I saw a lot of what I saw out of our current situation. When we could out-athlete someone we did ok....when it came to an APPortunity to outcoach someone.....we failed. I just did not see the game adjustments I would have expected out of a coach in the NCAA tournament.

Moton would be an impressive hire and potentially a great one, but I just doubt whether he'd be interested. Can't hurt to call, of course.

The Hoop Dirt basketball coaching rumor blog continues to name names we've heard before. On Sunday afternoon, the Dirt King reiterated what we've been hearing for two weeks...

* Duggar Baucom - VMI
* Derrick Clark - Metro State
* Levelle Moton - NC Central ... http://www.levellemoton.com/home.html Sounds like he
may be involved at FAU, Jacksonville and Marshall as well. A hot name after leading his alma
mater to a 28 win season and an NCAA appearance. Has been the head coach at NCCU since
2009 – was an assistant there before that.

But, there's new material; relatively new, anyway!

* Ritchie McKay – Associate Head Coach Virginia. Former head coach at Liberty, New Mexico,
Oregon State, Colorado State, and Portland State. Holds a 204-186 record in 13 seasons as a DI
head coach.

* Darrin Horn – Former Head Coach South Carolina. Former head coach South Carolina and
Western Kentucky. Holds a 171-111 record in 9 seasons as a DI head coach. Had 4 straight 22+
win seasons at WKU capping it off with a 29 win campaign in 2007-08. Also worked as an
assistant at Marquette under Tom Crean. Despite the glowing record at his alma mater, WKU,
Horn struggled to a 60-63 record at South Carolina and was fired after four seasons. He has
remained out of coaching since; but USC paid him some $2.4 mil not to coach.

Darrin Horn's name is intriguing to me. I like his style of play, and I think he was just in a bit over his head at USC, which lets be honest, is a tough place to coach basketball, for a variety of reasons. He obviously has those "Sun Belt roots" that we've heard CC say he finds important, and he should know the recruiting territory around us pretty well from his time at WKU and in Columbia. The question is (as it always is going to be, or so it would appear) this: is CC interested, is he interested, and can we afford him.

I've talked about before how Ritchie McKay as one of the best paid assistants in the country that walked away from a good(ish) head coaching situation at Liberty to be an assistant at Virginia is unlikely to come to Boone.

Darrin Horn is an interesting name to throw into the hat. There are a few potential problems with Darrin Horn. I don't know how his buy-out with South Carolina works. becoming a head coach again might mess with his buy-out and not coaching for SC would probably pay better than coaching for App State.

I also don't know his salary situation at Western Kentucky but they are a basketball first school and I'm sure paid considerably better than we are able. I'm not sure he's interested in coaching at this level and with the APR issues and fan-base issues.

I don't know the answers to these questions but if you know click reply.

Linc.........is that you.? Three posts ever on the board and all three pertain to Mr Darner. I like the hire personally but it seems a bit fishy.

Horn is an interesting possibility. Great record at WKU, and (if Wikipedia can be trusted) uses an up-tempo, full-court press style that could help bring in fans (I remember his teams at WKU, just don't remember about style of play).

I'm not all that impressed with McKay's resume, honestly. He's left four different HC jobs after two years, and his record isn't really all that good anyway (sound familiar?). Only two 20-win seasons in 13 years as a HC, and one of those was because he had Seth Curry at Liberty.
