They don't need to. There are MANY people in this state, with no actual affiliation to UNC, that will accept anything coming out of UNC as the gospel truth.StumpyCulbreath wrote:They just let go the professor who assisted Willingham with her research. There's absolutely no end to their public stupidity. There's no way they should still have the two basketball championships earned by players who took illegal classes. It makes no sense that they cannot come to grips with this situation and get beyond it.

You seem to know a lot more about this than I care to, but I do enjoy ripping on other schools (NC State mostly). All I know is that it appears UNC screwed up, but has not been punished. Does that seem accurate?AppGrad1 wrote:appst89 wrote:This should be the biggest academic scandal in the history of college athletics, but because it happened in Chapel Hell, nothing is being done about it. Well, nothing unless you count the continued attempt to discredit the person who brought it all to light. A bogus department with fake classes, changed grades, and what work was done was done by tutors and they get nothing? Every school in America should just follow this model and there would never be any APR problems. I bet UW-Milwaukee and UNLV wish they had the blueprint for the Carolina Way.
Like I've said many times. I have no problems if anything happens to UNC for this.
Your hatred also shines through about what UNC is doing to dig into the information that MW has brought forth. 3 independent researchers have stated that MW's info is unreliable.
Are you actually blaming UNC for trying to discredit bogus information she has put out in the media? Are you serious????
You are the one who can't see through things because of your bias towards UNC.

Sorry ftw. She is not losing her job! She is resigning at the end of the semester. Stop with these inaccurate posting through your anti-blue glasses.Appftw wrote:http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2014/0 ... 1amscLD-Uk
"Willingham had said the experts weren’t given access to all of the information she used to determine how well the athletes were reading. Her data involved roughly 180 athletes tested over an eight-year-period, but it was not vetted by an experienced co-investigator. Neither the full data set nor the underlying tests the athletes took have been made public."
Sorry, Appgrad1. The flagship is by no means transparent.
Why would Willingham try to tarnish UNC's reputation? It doesn't make sense because she seemed to love the university. She tried to expose the truth and now loses her job for it.

My parents didn't go to college, but they pulled for UNC. As a child, I pulled for UNC.AppGrad1 wrote:BeauFoster wrote:The researcher's email is a good start. No blue glasses. I don't care if they get punished or not. Does not matter to me whatsoever.
Still waiting on your link as to why UNC has refused to do anything about this stuff?
Many "older" folks in NC pull for a NC ACC school even if they went to another school later in their life.
They grew up in an era when ASU was not big on the college scene.
I grew up in that era and if you didn't you have no clue about this age group.
There were ONLY ACC schools in our "early" years. You pretty much were influenced by what your parents were watched during those times.
As I grew older I checked into ASU, visited and loved the school and was accepted and loved every minute of it and support it as a season ticket holder for many years.
I still pull for UNC but do NOT support it in any way. That's hard for you younger folk to understand. And yes, there will be some "older" folk who will discredit this by saying they only pull for ASU but it will not be the norm...
But, when I grew up, I put away childish things.

One can be ousted by collective pressures and a hostile work environment as surely as being asked directly to pack up your things and get the hell out. I read an article in this morning's paper about it. Very sad that she was bullied to that point, so yes, I suppose it did kind of ruin my day.

She "resigned" after being demoted and "meeting" with the chancellor (which according to reports was really just the Chancellor berating her for an hour).
But hey man, whatever helps you sleep in your baby blue pj's. You're handling UNC's PR almost as well as they are.

While I can see how pressures to conform or "resign" can be enormous, there are laws for whistle blowers that protect them from being shown the door. If this woman has enough integrity to call out her own employer then I don't think that she would cower to pressures to leave.

According to you Appgrad1, we're just jealous haters. Never mind that the scandal has caused a national firestorm (the national media is also blinded by irrational hate, obviously).
"Everyone does it" is just not a good enough excuse. Not for cheating or being a tar hole bandwagon fan.

I think she showed a ton of integrity. She showed the integrity to release something that the world needed to know, despite decades of coverup from her colleagues. Sweeping it under the rug would be the cowardly thing to do.
Maybe she underestimated the level of subsequent fallout. Or maybe she just threw caution to the wind for the sake of transparency. And who knows. Maybe she is seeking counsel.

The articles I read stated the opposite. The chancellor was taking notes and there was no berating.
But I'm sure your article was the gospel and the ones I read was falsified.

I mentioned a hostile work environment. And I read about it in the Herald Sun.

I 'm sure she sought counsel before coming out with this information. It would shock me if she didn't. I don't know if you have seen the ESPN piece on this or not, but they also interviewed a former football player. He alluded to the fact that coaches had to know something. Now I am a Carolina fan, ( but only a rooting interest) but if the coaches and Athletic Dept officials were aware of this, and there is no reason to think otherwise, then I say lock the gates of Kenan and doors of the Smith Center for a couple of years.

Re: UNC hires Outside Experts to check data...
I'm a lifelong UNC fan who pulled for UNC long before I ever made my first trip to Boone and finally saw the light. While I have long held the school in Chapel Hill in high regard as one of the best public universities in the US, it seems we are left waiting for "more" from UNC leadership in terms of confronting current issues head on and setting an example for others to follow. This is what one would expect under the old model, "the Carolina Way". but it appears it has now been left to others in our State to take the leadership role and lead the way in "doing" college sports right. I am hoping ASU will use this opportunity to lead the way and set an example for others to follow and put the emphasis on "Student', in the so called "Student-Athlete" model.

Re: UNC hires Outside Experts to check data...
At the end of the day, are we using athletics to enhance the overall mission of the school? I would hope that we are graduating student-athletes who are true leaders, thinkers and problem solvers, ones who will be an asset to our proud school, long after playing days are over. I think back over some of my favorite ASU players in various sports over the years, and many have done well in the classroom, graduated, and gone on to do great things after college. I truly hope this continues and is no way diminished by the growing demands on the athlete in "Student-athlete"
