Intangible in Recruiting

Unread post by NewApp » Tue May 27, 2014 4:29 am

Firemoose and Charlie's thorough studies of recruiting of football and basketball are thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated by dozens of members of this MMB, including myself. However, there is one statistic that none of these stats can assess nor predict accurately but we could certainly use that information. That stat is one of character, and based upon past Mountaineer experiences, is one we sorely need. Just sayin'.

Again, thanks to Firemoose and Charlie's efforts.

We have had far more more athletes with great character and attitude than we have had bad apples. Let's celebrate them.

Here's a simple answer. The entire staff went to Alabama and surrounding areas with a group of approved offers. Those offers were contingent, however, on each player having a one on one meeting with the coaches. We know we had 11 AL offers go out. We do not know how many we met with but it was more than that. I also know of players that the staff has mentioned wanting to extend offers to but those will not come until after camp. Those players also have to meet with Coach Satterfield personally before any offer is approved.

We know that they have already evaluated each player on talent. Enough so that they were/are ready to offer. I'll give everybody two guesses as to what they are looking for in those one on one meetings. You shouldn't need more than one to figure it out.

Not trying to downplay the effort but how much can a conversation really probe? Again I am glad they are doing something, and maybe they are asking the right questions, but I have dealt with way to many that know what to say and how to act for a bit but after that.....

Though with that said, kudos for what the coaches are doing.

There is no way to know exactly what a recruit is going to do once they get away from home and into the college life. You can only hope you get players who haven't had past problems and keep engaged with them once they are here. And clamp down HARD on those that do cause problems to send a message (see last year). Conversations (1 of them or 20) aren't going to tell you everything but it's better than nothing or only seeing a recruit for their abilities. This process starts in recruiting and continues all the way through a players college career. And that's the way it should be.

This is only our second class with this staff. It's going to be a few more years before we see if this approach works. I, for one, am looking forward to seeing what results we produce.

Price, who is arguably the biggest delinquent to wear the Black and Gold in recent history, is one of the most well-spoken, seemingly intelligent college aged kids I've ever met.

Speaking of Sean Price, did he drop out of school the day he was off the team or did he finish the semester/year? Were is he now?

What you wrote is about what any adult that was worked with the under-18 crowd would be thinking I am sure. I guess it would be nice to hear a story how we recruited someone and then after the interview we pulled the scholly offer, and then another school offered and it ended up being a hot mess for the other school. That would validate the process.

Sean Price can be described in many ways and in many words. I will use one word: Weird.

A portion of that description is positive in terms of what you just mentioned. He really is a unique person. The other portion is negative as he went from someone that could've broken every record Brian Quick or Andrew Peacock set and been an instant millionaire in the NFL in 2017 to... a pothead that posts about soccer on twitter.

I will never fully get over that he threw away an opportunity to be the greatest App State WR in school history. Now Shaedon Meadors gets a shot, I suppose.

But at the end of the day "What if..." doesn't cut it and I am glad he's off the team.

It is an inexact science. The same guy that recruited Tim Tebow recruited Aaron Hernandez.

Alan Atwater would have to rank up there along with the 3 guys who were accused of sexual assault. Of course with Atwater, we knew what we were getting into from the get go of his recruitment.

Wait...so being accused of something makes you a delinquent now? That's a really dangerous statement.

Where did I say they're delinquents? I was merely pointing out to El Gonzo that we have had cases just as bad or worse than Price. As to the alleged assaulters, they were crucified dead and buried by most on this board. I kept saying they were innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law, but the girl in question did not choose to press charges. Thus, in my opinion, they should have been allowed to continue on the team. I've always contended that any female who actually presses charges' name should be released to the media just as the accused' names are or neither, but that, unfortunately is not the way the people want the system to work.

IMOp, your post should have been directed to Gonzo, not me.

McLeansvilleAppFan brought up an interesting question. The way you started the thread, inferring thar Moose's coverage of recruiting was missing some unqualifiable stat, was eye roll-inspiring as usual. I stand my my
