Muschamp: No FCS Games

Unread post by MAD Doctor » Wed May 28, 2014 8:55 am

Though he says it has nothing to do with last year's loss to the Stink, Florida coach Muschamp voiced his desire for the SEC to stop having FCS games on their schedules. (Notice how the Florida AD implies that FCS teams are not D1).

http://espn.go.com/college-football/sto ... -fcs-teams

Seems like more Power Conferences are wanting to eliminate the FCS games, which will have serious financial results for some FCS programs. More confirmation we made the right move.

Well ... now they can play GaSo and lose to an FBS team

It won't be long until the FCS schools vote to lower scholarships. They simply can't operate at current levels without the big payday.

While Muschamp clearly prefers not to play FCS opponents, his athletic director and a vast majority of other decision makers in the SEC understand the reality of scheduling matchups with FCS teams. Quite simply, power conference teams need the flexibility of scheduling opponents that don't require return games. Even Big Ten schools are backtracking from their desire to avoid FCS games.

FCS-FBS matchups aren't going away, despite Muschamp's wishes.

I believe that the reason that SEC and ACC schools have usually scheduled FCS programs to play is that there are some fairly competitive FCS schools in the south - see us and GaSouthern for example. The Big Ten programs do not have the luxury of pulling a bunch of FCS programs due to a lack of competitive teams in the region with a few exceptions like Illinois State and Northern Iowa to name a couple. However, the Big Ten loads up on directional Michigan schools and the like which is probably similar to teams like Furman, Wofford, Coastal Carolina, Liberty, etc.....
I do look forward to the day that we can get a shot at Duke and UNC and renew games with ECU and Wake.

I respectfully disagree. Unilateral home games could easily be filled by GO5 schools and the increase in price would be well worth it to add another win towards bowl eligibility.

It's only a matter of time before BCS/FCS games are no more.

Not going to happen, Gonzo. Read the entire article. FCS games to FBS/power conference schools are like crack to a junkie.

The p5 vs p5 tickets will be so costly, it may just have a negative effect. Aug 30 your tv line up is Bama vs UCLA, Clemson vs Oregon, Oklahoma vs Mich State. You gonna pay, drive, sit in the sun or are you gonna fire up the grill, stock the fridge with beer, sit in your undies and flip channels. (Let's assume App has an open date).

Maybe not eliminated, but the last few years 90% of P5 schools played an FCS opponent annually, that percentage will drop by 20-30% by 2016. If FCS opponents are treated negatively under the playoff SOS model that % will drop even more dramatically.

I've not certain college football is changing for the better but in three months it will definitely be changing.

There's no denying the trend. Of course all I can do is read all the articles and monitor the pattern. I'm not omnipotent like 78.

All it will take to make these games come to an end (for the majority of teams) is one major team being left out of the playoff because their SOS was too low thanks to an FCS game.

I'm with you on this 78 - these power teams have real battles week to week thru their conference games - they will figure a way to schedule an "easy" win that will not affect their power rankings - I am not sure they have even determined the criteria to determine the 4 teams in the playoffs --- Also, every year there are several FCS teams which have higher RPI (or whatever) rankings than the really bad FBS teams ---

Just decided to check this out - 2013-4 - FCS had 4 teams in the top 102 and from 100-150 there were 20 FCS teams compared to 30 FBS ---

Which is worse: losing to another big FBS team or beating an FCS school? Rhetorical question.
